« Scoop: Dan Rather Really Is Karl Rove's Mind-Puppet | Main | Orchestrated By "Political Partisans"? »
September 20, 2004

"Follow the Money"

Political crimes, a secretary in the midst of things, Dan Rather, and now "follow the money" -- the Watergate analogy keeps getting thicker. Thicker than old chicory molasses on a cold West Texas night.

The American Thinker tips that Sumner Redstone is dumping 340,000+ shares of CBS stock.

Karl tips me:

"Many may say that this is but a fraction of his wealth. While that may be the case, note that he is dumping almost all of his options. And their value is much more sensitive to price variations (depending on the strike price) than his underlying stock holdings. Hence it looks like he knows or fears the price is heading south (perhaps even under his strike price) and not coming back for quite some time. Surely this raises your eyebrows as well?"

The SEC filing is here.

By the Way: I'm not suggesting anything improper here. Redstone has all the public information he needs to make this decision.

I'm just saying that this savvy investor -- and big-time Democratic donor -- seems to realize CBS is going down.

Maybe CBS and Viacom ought to realize the potential debacle here, and fast. CBS and Viacom are billion dollar concerns; CBS News barely manages to eke out a profit. Do they really want to destroy an entire network to protect one egotistical, arrogant old coot from embarassment?

Don't give it another thought. The amount of money's so pitifully small for a guy that rich and the penalty so high for getting caught that it's just not likely he's stupid enough to do this.

Of course, I said that about Martha too.

"Thicker than rain drops from a Texas hurricane falling on a daring and impetuous but ultimately honest and sincere young reporter with no political party affiliations whatsoever, really."

I have written extensively on this as well, and think my post adds to Thomas Lifson's perpective. Thanks, Jack Risko

No evidence that Redstone is doing anything other than rearranging the assets of his vast wealth a bit. The Viacom shares mentioned planning to be struck or sold are a pittance of this legendary, tough Hollywood Jewish business mogul's holdings.

You have to look at his past SEC filings to understand his dealings - which show he reallocates his investments regularly.

On the surface, since the public was appraised that the documents were fake by the Internet storm long before Redstone was made aware of it, there is no basis for saying he was acting on inside info.

While Redstone is a greedy capitalist billionaire totally unconcerned with bettering society, only bettering Sumner & His Own - he is in no trouble. On the other hand, when he or his heirs (the guy is old! old!)looks at the CBS fools for more downsizing opportunities to make more Sumner Redstone money flow to the vast Redstone Family coffers....well, lots of CBS people are what I'd call in the "deep and darks". Redstone is thought to be one of the most ruthless ones out there.

My commentors have convinced me that the Redstone thing is crap, an infinitessimal farction of his holdings.

The Redstone thing is most likely crap. He's probably on an irrevocable plan to sell pre-arranged blocks of shares or options at certain dates regardless of where the price is or where Rather's head is wedged.

The 341,500 are only about 1/3 of the options he was holding not "substantially all" as noted above. See Table II, Col. 9. of the filing. He's got 658,500 options left in his hand.

Lost Seventies Mystery Click: The Darkest Song Ever Recorded?
I think Professor of Rock (on YouTube) claimed this song was so upsetting that people used to pull over to the side of the road when it came on the radio. It's about a fatal plane crash, but obviously it suggests a fatal car crash too, which could wig out a driver.
It's like one of those nasty 70s anti-war body horror movies. Not for the squeamish. I'm not even going to post the lyrics because they're upsetting too.

I'm frankly surprised the title is 107 Days. I would have thought it would be:

Days Are Important: The Amount of Days Was a Number and That Number Was 100 Plus 7 Which is 107. 107. One Hundred and Seven. It's a Memoir and Memoirs are About Remembering Things Because Remembering Things is Good. Not Bad. Good. Memoir. A Memoir. Like a Reservoir But With Memory. We Have to Let it Flow. We Have to Let It Flow Into the Reservoir of Our Mind and Our Heart. Our Heart Which is the Beating Heart of Not Just Our Blood, But Our Progress. And Our People. And Democracy. The End.

Former CIA operative John Kiriakou talks with Matt Taibbi about the Brennan/Comey Coup
Both guys are old liberals, maybe even of the far-left variety, and both are appalled by the Democrat/Deep State coup against the US. Kiriakou says that CIA officers were legally obligated to report to the Inspector General John Brennan's repeated overruling of actual intelligence to encode his partisan conspiracy theories into US intel product, but of course they didn't.
