« UPDATE: One of the "Scrubbed Files" Burkett Saw in the Trash Was "Signed by LTC Jerry Killian" | Main | Typography Expert: Nothing At All "Alleged" About Forgeries »
September 12, 2004

O-Dub Throws in One Towel, and Then Another

It's been amusing to me to watch Democratic spinners attempt to claim that "it just doesn't matter if these documents are forgeries" (often simultaneously while demanding that Bush respond to the allegations suggested by the same forgeries).

Oliver Willis offers what is as close to an admission that the documents are forgeries as we're likely to see when he tells us it doesn't matter anyway because no one is paying any damn attention:

So when we all get into these micro-disputes about document kerning (who knew how many typography geeks were blogging!) or exactly what the frigging requirements are for a silver star and why or why not the qualifications were met -- it isn't like this in the real world.

Seems to me that the It-Just-Doesn't-Matter cry is best reserved for the situation for which it was invented, i.e., you're going up against the really good and organized summer camp and you're going to have your ass handed to you.

He also pretty much concedes defeat in the election (too early, I think, but who am I to judge?) by suggesting that maybe 51% of the country just isn't smart enough to elect Kerry president, so maybe the Democrats should take their legislative ball and go home:

To date, its clear that the reality of the Iraq situation and the wounded economy aren't breaking through to the majority of Americans (us 49%ers are sadly, ahead of the curve). The Bush admin is playing all this like a football game, setting things up to expire just beyond the election.

Heaven forbid the Bush admin win a second term, I think the Dems would best serve democracy by simply not cooperating with them in any way, shape or form.

I always enjoy that they're-just-not-smart-enough-to-elect-us whine. It's as welcome, and as predictable, as the coming of autumn and the turning of the leaves.

Blorpy is actually sort of echoing Steyn's point when he says, "Who cares, anyway?"

Even if the forgeries had been good ones, nobody would have cared. The Bush/TANG/AWOL story is old news, and nobody cared about it very much this spring when it came out.

The Democrats just severely damaged one of their key strategic resources (the in-pocket, non-Fox news media) in an operation that would likely have had a very small payoff even if it had been 100% successful. It's the equivalent of the Navy losing an aircraft carrier on a peacekeeping mission in Liberia.

This recalls another Steyn-point about who the stupid candidate in this race really is...

Posted by: DTLV on September 12, 2004 06:05 PM

Bingo DTLV.

It's one thing to have your credibility destroyed fudging a major issue, but Bush/AWOL wasn't, except for political junkies -- even the first time around.

I once had a dachshund. They have short, powerful legs and long bodies to chase quary into holes, tunnels, warrens and lairs. But that's not enough. They have to be smart, too, because clever quary maintain a network of entries and dead ends to thwart intruders, and to confuse, trap and suffocate predators.

To have gotten trapped in such an inconsequential dead end, not even close to the quarry, would not have been the sign of an intelligent dachshund.

Please invite Mr. Willis to shove THIS definitive technical analysis up his sun-don;t-shine.

As for Willis' sniffing, I'll take his football analogy a step further. Claiming that you really have a better game plan -- and better looking uniforms, to boot -- but that you're getting hammered anyway because the referees are calling against you, the other side is cheating and the clock is running out is lame enough. Doing it before the game is over is even lamer. But when you're beating yourself and start looking for someone else to blame, that's lamest of all.

It's always the same with these guys -- the voters don't 'get it,' the other side's playing dirty tricks, there's a conspiracy or a smear, or a single television commercial aired in a few states (Willie Horton did in Dukakis. Yeah, right.) -- whatever -- anything but their crappy candidates and an agenda we've told them time and time again we don't want. If the coach and players of my favorite team came on after each loss blaming everyone but themselves, talking about how the fans just don't understand the beauty of their strategy, I'd switch teams.

Posted by: Cosmo on September 12, 2004 06:46 PM

On the bright side, as long as they still don't get it, we will continue to win.

On the other hand, if they weren't total morons, they wouldn't be... total morons, and we wouldn't have this problem of them nominating moron candidates with moron policies.

If Joe Lieberman were the Dem candidate, you might well say "Well, I prefer Bush, and I'm voting for him, but it Lieberman gets in I still trust him to do what's right." With Kerry, you don't know what you're going to get except a mess, because apart from being an idiot himself, he has to pander to the idiots to get support. (Also, his staff appears to consist entirely of idiots, whereas Bush has surrounded himself with a very smart group of people.)

Thank you for reading the LLL bloggers for all of us. I refuse to give them traffic unless there's an absolute need.

But they are kinda funny in a sad sorta way.

*sigh*

Willis and his snotty attitude is only the tip of the iceberg.

One thing We can count on is that as Kerry wounds himself with one after another political accidental discharges, he and his Moonies will grow more desperate and vocal. The lies will become more outrageous, and pushed with greater intensity.

That the lefties cant figure out that the majority of Americans no longer buy their utopian dreams is in our favor. That they continue to look down their self defined, intellectually superior noses at us inferiors will continue to be their undoing. Lets hope they continue to hold themselves above Us.

The Democrats should stop cooperating?

You mean, they are now?

Posted by: Eric Pobirs on September 12, 2004 08:44 PM

It's been obvious for the past couple weeks that Willis (whachyoutalkinbout!) has been slipping into a deep depression.

Equally amusing, for my money, has been watching Josh Marshall hem and haw and hedge trying to come to grips with the fact that he was completely sucked in by the bogus memos. Too funny.

Shouldn't the headline read "one enormous towel, reeking of tartar sauce," where it now says "one towel"? I'm sure that's a mistake...

Well, who can argue against logic like that? StopBush has convinced me that Kerry is the only hope for America.

Seriously though, isn't it a bit late for you to be up. It's a school night after all.

he's got a point there. max cleland is a fine example.

Why isn't it that Dan Rather acting like McCarthy waving false documents to make unfounded claims being called... McCarthyism? But then I guess McCarthy had more credibility

For years the cry of the Republicans was "sheeple". It is always the losers cry.

i.e. the people who are buying don't want what I'm selling.

I believe soon, very soon, the Dems will need a new product.

Why the Dems will be looking for a new market placement

Posted by: M. Simon on September 13, 2004 01:11 AM

Pixy,

Lieberman was my prefered candidate over Bush.

Why?

1. He gets capitalism
2. He gets the war
3. He gets civil liberties

He is the future of the center. Competition will mainly be in area #3 with only tactical adjustments in #1 & #2.

Posted by: M. Simon on September 13, 2004 01:23 AM

re: lieberman -- I recall a couple years ago he was heading some big drive to ban violent video games.

I can do without the nanny statism -- or pandering, if you want to interpret it another way -- and implied lack of understanding of cause and effect. But he isn't bad on most of the other issues.

Posted by: bkw on September 13, 2004 04:25 AM

Calling people stupid is one of those mote/beam deals. It is usually more indicative of the accuser than the accused. It may take 2 more election cycles ('06 and '08) before these guys give up on the 'people are too stupid' meme. That's all to the good. The VRWC should help them push this all they can.

The measure of a man is not by how he treats his superiors, but how he treats his perceived inferiors.

Posted by: Brett on September 13, 2004 09:58 AM

Lieberman cravenly jettisoned his nominal conservative and/or libertarian principles in his failed bid to be Al Gore's vice-president. Ugh, talk about selling your assets cheaply.

Occasional common-sense murmering regarding the War against Radical Islam will not redeem him in my eyes.

He only looks reasonable compared to the out-and-out lunatics who now comprise the Democratic Party.

Heh. It's funny they never seem to figure out that it's more like we're smart enough NOT to elect them. ;]

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
