Forged Docs: Having Trouble Catching Up?

If you're just hearing about this now, you might want to check out this re-print of PowerLine's post on CommandPost. PowerLine is down right now due to the Drudgelanche (worse even than an Instalanche), but you can find one of the major posts that got the ball rolling there.

Giving credit where credit's due: this all started, as far as I know, on FreeRepublic. Last night I saw a post that read "Let's do some investigating on these docs," which I laughed at-- the same "let's research" crap is all the rage on lunatic lefty sites like TableTalk or DU.

And yet-- by this morning, post 47 to this thread was sending people off scrambling to talk to forged-document experts.

Wow, I've never really paid attention to the Free Republic gang myself, but they sure did get the ball rolling on this thing.

The blogosphere has taken a life of its own, the analysis, pure journalism and dissection of these documents are simply amazing.

I'm trying my best to keep this stuff updated on my blog, and I keep going back and updating, I think I've made eight or so updates!

Information is moving at a blistering pace- I sure love the blogosphere.

What a marked difference between DU and Freepers!

An issue comes up on DU. Response?
"F... Bush!"
"He's Bushitler!"
"He's so stupid, my goldfish is smarter."
"He's an evil mastermind running the world and manipulating the press to not prove his lies!"
"F... Bush!"
"Man, the newspaper won't publish my editorial on the front page! That's just John AshKKKroft ruining free speech and trampling on our rights!"

An issue comes up on Free Republic. Response?
"Someone should look into this."
[Within 24 hours, the top experts in the field determine the documents are fake]

It's pretty much the difference between people who sit around and bitch for a few hours before taking another bong hit and telling their mom to stop violating their 33-year-old dignity by coming in their room without knocking, and people who recognize a problem and do something about it.

...just another reason why the Democrat Party is imploding.

Not just the Dems, the whole blogosphere is imploding. Except with blogs, it's from people coming, not going.

LGF and powerline are down. INDC was a bit slow. I'm waiting for a server timout for Ace's.

Oh, Fox is going to run with this for sure now.

I'm on the west coast. Can any of you easterners keep us informed as to the news this evening (while it's still afternoon here)?

Posted by: hobgoblin on September 9, 2004 05:18 PM

Hob- If I watch the news tonight [New York] I'll see if I can relay any mentions of the forgery story. I know Fox will run with this, the only question is how long will it take for old media to pick up on this? (There's a chance it'll hit Fox today, but I'm skeptical that they'll take a chance at it too soon, assuming they've even been clued into it.)

Posted by: Rob on September 9, 2004 05:24 PM

Thanks, Rob.

You're probably right about not picking up on it yet. We'll see I guess.

Posted by: hobgoblin on September 9, 2004 05:48 PM

I knew it would come to this. Or something like this anyways. You fascist wingnuts never let up.

For what it is worth, the typewriter in question was developed and sold to clients in 1941, far well enough in advance for the military to use it in 1972.

http://www-1.ibm.com/ibm/history/history/year_1941.html

God you freepers are so desperate. Tick, tock, only a few months and we pull the plug.

Posted by: Concerned Citizen on September 9, 2004 05:50 PM

"A free-floating cadre of rightist warriors."

The mainstream flak who coined it meant it as an insult, but I like much better than Al Gore's "digital brownshirts."

Posted by: Nicholas Kronos on September 9, 2004 05:54 PM

You forgot "racist and bigoted [and don't forget sexist either!]". At least keep the story consistent.

Oh yeah, CC, if you can explain the "smart quotes", the Times New Roman font, and the ability to reproduce them exactly (check Charles Johnson, he did it, and then superimposed it identically on the actualy memo), then feel free. Nice try at debunking us, nice, but ultimately insufficient.

Posted by: Rob on September 9, 2004 05:57 PM

God you freepers are so desperate. Tick, tock, only a few months and we pull the plug.

If that were true, you wouldn't bother coming here to say anything to us. BTW, what the hell is a "freeper"?

Posted by: Smack on September 9, 2004 05:57 PM

Whoops, almost forgot the "th" as it appears on the memo.

Thats another thing to overcome, CC. Wouldn't want to forget that now.

Posted by: Rob on September 9, 2004 05:58 PM

Smack, "freeper" is a mostly deratory term used to talk about people over at the Free Republic boards.

Posted by: Rob on September 9, 2004 05:59 PM

There will be an accounting, CC. And hopefully you can account for the superscript "th", too.

Posted by: See-Dubya on September 9, 2004 06:00 PM

LGF sealed it for me.

I no longer care about forgery experts, or signature analysts, or Carnack the flippin' Magnificent.

You show me an exact replica of the document typed in today's Microsoft Word, I am convinced.

Wow. Just wow. This is gonna get real ugly.

Cheers,
Dave

Brit Hume is on the case right now....

Posted by: The Black Republican on September 9, 2004 06:03 PM

Well, since I didn't even know what one was, there's no way I can be one, is there? I guess that's another lump of B.S. we can add to Citizen's pile. It's already beginning to smell.

Posted by: Smack on September 9, 2004 06:07 PM

Darn, everyone is beating me to it. Brit Hume just mentioned it.

Posted by: Rob on September 9, 2004 06:07 PM

That the typewriter existed does mean it typed in Times New Roman or that it could do superscripts. No other memo that I've seen from that era concerning Bush contains proportional font. Are we to believe Killian (whose signature does not match on the memo with his known memo) had the proportional font typewriter kept to himself.

It is all moot, anyway, as the Army keeps exact records as to what was where. If it comes to it, the Pentagon can search the archives and find exactly what typewriter was in the office.

Posted by: addison on September 9, 2004 06:10 PM

Oops.
...Kllian...with his known signature...

Posted by: addison on September 9, 2004 06:12 PM

Good lord. I'm not sure what's more astonishing - that CBS used forged docs or that the Freepers uncovered it. Oh... wait. CBS. Nebber mind... there's only one shocking part in that, not two. ;]

Posted by: Ironbear on September 9, 2004 08:49 PM

Some typewriters (not likely to have been used at that time and for that purpose) did have proportional font. And a super anal-retentive could switch out type balls to get the smaller superscript type (but why avoid using it in most examples with the extra space?). But no typewriter ever did kerning, which is varying the distance between letters to account not only for the individual letters' widths, but also the exact letter combination (e.g., LT fits closer together than either LL or TT).

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
