Calling the SwiftVets: John Forbes Kerry's First Diplomatic Test

For two years John Forbes Kerry has been telling us that he could convince hostile nations to do our bidding just through force of personality and sweet reason.

Well, here's a smaller test, Johnny. Here are 240 or so Vets that you actually already sort of know.

Use these vaunted diplomatic skills we've heard so much about to achieve the sort of outcome you want.

We'll be watching-- and judging. If you can't convince these 240 guys to do something they're fundamentally opposed to (like shutting up, God bless 'em), I don't see how on earth you can expect us to believe you can convince Iran, North Korea, and (worst of them all) France to do America's bidding.

Update: Smack adds:

Test: Diplomacy
Status: FAILED
Explanation: "When we dedicated swift boat one in '92, I said to all the swift guys that I wasn't talking about the swifties, I was talking about all the rest of the veterans."

I can see it now:

John Forbes Kerry speaking with diplomats from Poland, the Czech Republic, Norway, Italy, Australia, and Britain: "When I called you all a 'phoney coalition' of the 'bribed, bought, and coerced,' I was talking about different countries. You know, countries that don't matter. How shall I put this? Non-white-majority countries.

"Basically, I was talking about Trinidad and Tobego, and only Trinidad and Tobego. Why you all think I was talking about you I really have no idea."

Update: Publius notes:

Wait a minute, I thought Kerry's first Diplomatic Test were his talks with the North Vietnamese in Paris while the U.S. was still at war.

Let me clarify: His first diplomatic test since becoming an announced presidential candidate.

Of course he was a presidential candidate when he was eating cucumber finger-sandwiches with the Cong, too. But that was in the mid-phases of his lifelong presidential campaign. And he had not yet announced his intentions, although, to be sure, pretty much everyone already knew.

Whoa now, soldier. Johnny never said he was going to make Iran, NorK and France "do America's bidding." He said he was going to make them like us again. The two are mutually exclusive.

Posted by: Allah on August 24, 2004 02:29 PM

He's either going to make them like us again or make us like them. As in he wants to turn this country in a bunch of liberal push-over weenies who work 35 hours a week and complain because nobody is paying for our Zoloft persciptions.

What's up with this? "Kerry and Brant slept in the same quarters, and Brant used to put Kerry back to bed at night when Kerry was sleepwalking." Can you see Theresa doing this?

"Juanita...JuaNITA! Mr. Kerry is having one of his 'episodes' again. I want you to re-make the bed, and this time use the thousand thread count silk sheets. Then I want you to re-warm the bed, I just can't fall back asleep in a cold bed. Oh and fetch Mr. Kerry back before he commits a "war crime" with the Howels spaniel again."

Kerry may be the only US statesman capable of calming the ruffled feathers of the allies. Bush has made the whole world the enemy. The cleanup won't be easy but it's got to be done. Thank goodness someone like Kerry is available just at the right time.

Posted by: Akefa on August 24, 2004 03:45 PM

Ya know Ace, you allude to a point I always bring up to my Kerry-supporter friends.

Kerry says, if elected, he'll be able to bring all our "former allies" back into the fold through his "I'm really focused on making you my friend" diplomacy. These countries are widely assumed to be France, Germany, and Russia (how Russia was ever an ally, I have no idea-- I always figured that the best we could hope for from them was benign neglect).

Sooo. . . what I wonder is, wouldn't Kerry's election piss off the Brits, Aussies, Italians, Poles, South Koreans etc. who supported us in the war, but have been derided ever since by Kerry and the Left? I mean, if Bush is reelected, at a minimum he has the status quo: France, Germany, and Russia play mean. If Kerry is elected, there is no guarantee that F, G, and R will play nice-- but automatically, we're in the hole with the countries that, oh, ACTUALLY FOUGHT AND BLED WITH AMERICA.

If Kerry were really a serious man, he would take pride and show gratitude at the sacrifices our friends have made fighting in a war *we* chose to start (or finish, depending on how you look at it). Michael Moore may laugh at the Ukrainians fighting with us, but I simply sit in awe that nations with no obvious stakes care enough to send their men to fight alongside ours. Sure, I'm certain there's some realpolitik at play, and that they think that it'll pay off in some way in the end (trade agreements, defense deals). But our soldiers are still next to their soldiers, and vice versa, and that must count for something valuable in future diplomacy. For a long time to come, our nations will share in the sacrifices-- and achievements-- in this war. That collective memory will count for a lot one day (all those crosses may not mean much to the French anymore, but to some they do).

Cheers,
Dave

Akefa, were you perhaps aware that your name is an anagram for "a fake"?

Posted by: see-Dubya on August 24, 2004 03:49 PM

Akefa is a sacred muslim name. You make yourself a foolish infidel by mocking it. There will be an accounting.

Posted by: Akefa on August 24, 2004 03:53 PM

See what you've gone and done, see-Dubya? Dar al-Harb was bearable while it was just populated by "infidels," but now you've crossed the line and made yourself a "foolish infidel." Now we're all in big trouble. There will be an accounting.

Posted by: Rocketeer on August 24, 2004 04:10 PM

Will this accounting be done by accountants? Cause I'm still waiting for my tax refund and I'm gonna be pissed if it gets delayed due to some Islamic bullshit.

Posted by: Senator PhilABuster on August 24, 2004 04:13 PM

akefa,

Please don't go threatening to sic your god on us. It's medieval and fucking goofy.

Posted by: ace on August 24, 2004 04:16 PM

BRING. IT. ON.

Posted by: See-Dubya on August 24, 2004 04:42 PM

He's right. I googled akefa and it's Arabic for "infinite idiot who wields sword of posting shit."

Posted by: Nicholas Kronos on August 24, 2004 04:43 PM

Huh. That's odd. I googled akefa too, and it's not just an Arabic word. Apparently, in Latin, it means "intellectual homunculus."

Posted by: Rocketeer on August 24, 2004 04:47 PM

Akefa is a sacred muslim name. You make yourself a foolish infidel by mocking it. There will be an accounting.

It's OK. I've got H&R Block.

Akefa,

Dude, you absolutely rock. Funniest, craziest shiite all day. Couldn't stop laughing. Look forward to your continued pearls of wisdom.

Over at Drudge, I saw that J Kerry already tried to schmooze one of the swift boat vets, named Brant. Brant told him, and I paraphrase, "Pound rice." heh

Posted by: jblake on August 25, 2004 12:16 AM

When we dedicated swift boat one in '92, I said to all the swift guys that I wasn't talking about the swifties, I was talking about all the rest of the veterans.

When I first read this yesterday on Drudge, I was stunned. Can you believe he said this? Can. You. Believe. He. Said. This.

You can just see all of his campaign staff closing their eyes, lowering their heads, and letting out one huge collective groan.

Posted by: Longshanks on August 25, 2004 07:45 AM

One of you jokers is fakey Akefa, just trying to stir up some controversy. Who is it, fess up.

It is so hard to tell the mock-moonbat from the real ones. They all say the same stuff over and over again.

Posted by: lauraw on August 25, 2004 09:25 AM

I occasionally do an only-slightly-over-the-top imitation of Akefa when the mood strikes. But I haven't done that here. Besides, I always call myself "Akefa 2" or "Akefa Jr." or something.

Posted by: Smack on August 25, 2004 10:08 AM

I can see it's time for another haiku...

Akefa. Moron?
Real troll or just satire?
A joke, either way.

"Akefa" is a well-known blog troll who's simply changed aliases. He/she will tire and move on.

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.
(((Dan Hodges)))
@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
