Kerry Campaign Admits First Purple Heart May Have Been Self-Inflicted

I noted the importance of John Forbes Kerry's "we still have not been shot at" diary earlier this week.

The Kerry campaign's admission is on Drudge so you've probably seen it, of course. Still, I have to dignify the news by elevating it to a full Ace of Spades HQ mention:

Kerry's campaign now says is possible first Purple Heart was awarded for unintentional self-inflicted wound...

In Kerry's own journal written 9 days later, he writes he and his crew, quote, 'hadn't been shot at yet'... Developing...

This is huge. This will be the second confirmation of a SwiftVets charge in as many weeks.

There must be smoking gun evidence that Kerry's wound was self-inflicted, or else the campaign would never have admitted this possibility. And I don't just mean because he's an incorrigible liar; I just mean it's far too damaging to give the SwiftVets this sort of ammunition. This second admission will pretty much demand media scrutiny. And of course it adds to the SwiftVets credibility-- as far as charges so far proven one way or the other, the SwiftVets are 2 for 2.

This is huge. Oliver Willis Huge.

Correction: I originally wrote that Kerry himself had admitted this possibility; that of course was wrong. His campaign admitted it.

The media doesn't need to say anything about this garbage. Kerry is doing fine in the polls, even gaining ground. Let the republican dirty tricks burn themselves out in the backwaters. Nobody really cares if it isn't on the nightly news.

Stop stealing my Oliver Willis stuff, Ace.

Posted by: Jeff G on August 24, 2004 02:33 PM

Watch for Chris Matthews to start blustering at Kerry to shut up and stop making ridiculous claims that he wounded himself to get out of a war zone ASAP.

"Let the republican dirty tricks burn themselves out in the backwaters. "

Typical, anytime the FACTS don't support the leftist worldview - the lefties disparage the messenger.

Hey Akefa, jus keepa smokin ya reefa. Leave it to us. We'll make sure it gets on the nightly news. Dirt for dirt. Now exactly which poll do you refer to?

Posted by: dano on August 24, 2004 02:40 PM

Akefa sounds like a big media person, pretending that if something isn't in the "real media" then it can't possibly matter. Maybe Akefa is Pauline Kael risen from the dead, she of the "I can't imagine how Nixon got elected; no one I know voted for him" fame.

Ace, I was on the phone with Johnny Coldcuts this afternoon and he had the following to say:

"That Ace is a dipshit. He should know better.

Nothing is as "huge" as Oliver Willis. Not Andrew Sullivan's ego. Not George Soros' bank account. Not Washingtonienne's much abused anus, or Wonkette's fondness for butt-sex.

Maybe the planet Jupiter.

Oliver Walrus is so fat he actually has other, smaller, bloggers orbiting around him. Light has a better chance of escaping the clutches of a black hole than a fish-filet does of escaping from O-Dub."

I don't agree with Johnny about the "dipshit" part, but I get the sense he was using it as a term of endearment.

Posted by: Senator PhilABuster on August 24, 2004 02:54 PM

Hmm, if this doesn't "go away" do ya think the Dems will pull a Toricelli and switch Kerry for a more "electable" candidate in October? It worked once.
...I gotta get away from these conspiracy theory moonbats

Posted by: Iblis on August 24, 2004 03:04 PM

I like the degrees of huge angle. You got your O-Dub huge, your Michael Moore huge, your Linda Ronstadt huge, your Hillary's ankles huge, your Kerry's love of rich widows huge, your John Edwards lawsuit award huge...

Posted by: Joe R. on August 24, 2004 03:04 PM

He admitted nothing. You post a partial sentence and call that an admission? In what context was it said? We havent been shot at yet... today? Or by the sniper we keep seeing perched in a tree? or maybe... but we're expecting more gunfire any minute now? I'm no Kerry fan but lets not jump to conclusions and create a negative spin just for shits and giggles. The media does enough of that. Instead of being sidetracked by speculation, rhetoric, and bullshit grandstanding isn't it better to focus on the facts?

Posted by: mookie88 on August 24, 2004 03:10 PM

Kerry is doing fine in the polls, even gaining ground.

The infidel Republicans are NOT threatening to win reelection to the White House! They are not even on the ballot! We are slaughtering the infidels in massive numbers. They are committing suicide as we speak, rather than facing the horror of Democrat domination.

Posted by: Akefa Jr. on August 24, 2004 03:24 PM

Since I don't think we can reasonably expect the DU sitzpinklers to do any research for themsleves, here's the FACTS, straight from Kerry's court biographer Douglas Brinkley:

Brinkley recounts the outset of that mid-December journey, which included a crew of radarman James Wasser, engineman William Zaladonis, gunner's mate Stephen Gardner and boatswain's mates Drew Whitlow and Stephen Hatch:

"They pulled away from the pier at Cat Lo with spirits high, feeling satisfied with the way things were going for them. They had no lust for battle, but they also were were not afraid. Kerry wrote in his notebook, 'A cocky feeling of invincibility accompanied us up the Long Tau shipping channel because we hadn't been shot at yet, and Americans at war who haven't been shot at are allowed to be cocky.'"

The diary entry apparently confirms assertions made by Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth, a group of more than 250 vets opposing his presidential candidacy who served in the Naval operation that patrolled the rivers and canals of the Mekong Delta area controlled by North Vietnam.

No bullshit grandstanding, just Kerry's own diary biting him in the ass.

JeffG.,

Sorry if I stole Oliver Willis stuff from you. I can only offer my word that I didn't see the stuff in question on your site.

Rocketeer,

Thanks for dealing with that. Now I won't have to.

Posted by: ace on August 24, 2004 03:41 PM

mookie88: "He admitted nothing."

Okay, parse the book quote that way if you want. Then please explain why he has now stated through his campaign that the shrapnel "wound" in question "may have been unintentionally self inflected." as the swiftvets have claimed. (They are two for two by the way.) Even leftists only believe John Kerry is telling the truth when he is lying about his Viet Nam record. When he finally tells the truth you aparently don't believe it. Meanwhile, the now completely discredited fairy tale that Bush lied about WMD is still alive and well at the DU (as they were at the DNC). Wake up and smell the napalm guys. Your boy is cooked.

Posted by: Dacotti on August 24, 2004 05:15 PM

...your Hillary's ankles huge...

LOL. But, don't you mean cankles?

Posted by: Tongue Boy on August 24, 2004 05:24 PM

There have been so many different stories with the medals, and so much disinformation coming from the MSM, that I think the public is thoroughly confused, and this one might not stick on Kerry.

I think we need to stress Cambodia and the post-war activities.

Posted by: Mark on August 24, 2004 06:05 PM

Akefa. Dumbshit.
Head in anal cavity.
Kool-Aid tastes yummy!

Posted by: zetetic on August 24, 2004 07:52 PM

I was just joking, Ace. The O-Dub stuff is yours, and I've been doing too much of it lately.

I should have put one of these ;) after my comment, but I hate ;) so I didn't.

;)

There. That'll do it.

Posted by: Jeff G on August 24, 2004 10:32 PM

As much as I would like to see Kerry's claims fall one by one, I believe that the Purple Heart could still be valid without enemy gunfire.

If this is the "rice in the ass" purple heart then I could very well be wrong but I believe that if you are injured in the process of an act of war (i.e. destroying enemy munitions dumps, or rice storage containers), then it is still grounds for a purple heart. Granted we are only talking about rice in the ass, which may or may not qualify for a Purple Heart, but since it was the enemies' rice, then it could still stand.

Posted by: DelphiGuy on August 25, 2004 02:19 AM

I believe the "rice in the ass" PH was the third one.

Both involved a grenade too close.

And while self-inflicted can count, I believe it has to be in the context of a battle. There are conflciting reports about a battle in the rice incident.

Posted by: Phil on August 25, 2004 10:08 AM

There must be combat involved and you must be wounded by enemy weapons.

Posted by: The Moose on August 25, 2004 01:04 PM

Kerry's campaign representative who spoke about this is only being rational about his Dec 2, 1968 wound. Kerry was turned down by his commander for this purple heart, because it wasn't valid.

Kerry's own diary says on Dec 11, he hadn't been shot at yet.

But about 2 months later Kerry had a new commander who wasn't aware of the Dec 2, attempt by Kerry to get a purple heart and since Kerry's so good at lying, and the military trusted their soldiers to be honest, they believe whatever bs he told them without investigating it first.

When "Tour of Duty" came out, the Swift Boat Vets found out for the first time how many medal and what kind John Kerry had collected.

But what's worse than that, John Kerry again repeats all the charges and reafirms all the acusations he made about his fellow veterans in 1971.

Even though most of the "Winter Soldiers" testimony was proven to be baseless in claims.

So John Kerry wants to be a proud Vietnam war hero of a war in which all the other veterans were war criminals?

What's worse is half the country wants him to win. So to the people who support John Kerry, don't ever claim that you support the troops again, we know better.

I'm sure if the MSM succeeds in installing Kerry to the White House, Kerry will defend our current military's honor against unsubstantiated and biased charges of war crimes by those in his party or the press.

I doubt it. He'll be the one saying it.

Posted by: Gary B. on August 25, 2004 08:25 PM

Does "Freedom Of Speech" equal "Republican Dirty Tricks"?

Here, 30 years later, they admit that the first purple heart was undeserved.

Then, 30 years ago, he used it to get out after 4 months, and betray his "Band of Brothers"

I was never a fan of the Vietnam War.

Kerry chose to base his campaign on his 4 months there (rather than his record of the last 30 years)

OK then. Lets look at it.

What a sleezeball!

Elect him based upon this?

What a bunch of crap.

Dirty Tricks?

Sounds like people who were there speaking

their minds, and THE TRUTH.

-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.

@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
