RDBrewer explains: The XM307, our new grenade machine gun. Yes, grenade machine gun. It shoots high-explosive airbursting, armor piercing, and training ammunition. The rounds can explode while flying over a target. Accurate up to 2000 meters. More here, including a Quicktime video of the weapon in use. posted by Ace at 10:20 PM

shit like this almost makes me want to stay in...even the new individual rifle (forget the name, but it's an x-something) is awesome. i mean, it's hard to beat the mk19, but i think they've done it. Posted by: francisthegreat on August 10, 2004 12:49 AM
Al-Sadr could use a few rounds of that upside his head. Posted by: mbarek on August 10, 2004 08:50 AM
It has a "Dispersion of Less than 1.5 Mils, One Sigma Radius." I don't even know what the hell that even means, but I guarantee it's fucking amazing! Posted by: george gaskell on August 10, 2004 09:01 AM

Is this the weapon that started life as the OCSW? If so, all I can say is, "Dear Santa,"!!!! Oh, and francisthegreat, I believe the we4apon YOU are referring to is the OICW. If this thing IS the OCSW, it fires the same grenade as the GL portion of the OICW. Only faster. Posted by: Brian B on August 10, 2004 11:40 AM
I love the fact that, in the video, the shooter is just sitting there, looking at his little view screen, not bothered at all, not stressed or strained in the least, just pounding away. It's like he could be firing one of those carnival bean-bag guns at a row of milk bottles with clown faces painted on them. "Ho, hum look at me -- I'm firing armor-piercing grenades with a dispersion pattern of less than 1.5 mils, one sigma radius. All in a day's work. Yawn." Posted by: george gaskell on August 10, 2004 11:41 AM
This thing was actually developed as part of the OICW program, to fire the same ammunition as the grenade launcher part. The Army was unsatisfied with the lethality of the 20mm ammunition of the OICW, hence the move both here and in the Army's new shoulder fired grenade launcher to 25mm ammunition. And yes, the XM-8 is going to be bitchin, especially if we get smart, tell NATO to stuff it, and switch to 6.8mm Grendel. Posted by: Mr. Bowen on August 10, 2004 11:46 AM
Thanks Mr. Bowen, for the clarification. I knew it looked a lot like the OCSW, didn't know they'd upped the caliber of the ammo. Posted by: Brian B on August 10, 2004 11:58 AM
Not disagreeing at all, just want to figure out whether francisthegreat is talking about the XM29 (OICW) or the XM8 (lightweight assault rifle). My understanding is the XM8 is almost through pre-production and is going to start getting issued soon (fy05). http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/m8-oicw.htm The XM29 has still not gotten out of the testing phase (too bulky, too many fragile electronics, etc). But that's the rifle with the integrated grenade launcher that has programmable airbursts http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/m29-oicw.htm scroll down for pics in both instances Posted by: hobgoblin on August 10, 2004 12:05 PM
Speaking of the XM-8, see videos. http://www.armytimes.com/story.php?s=1-292925-xm8.php Posted by: gibs. on August 10, 2004 12:06 PM
I hate fucking quick time! Posted by: Greg on August 10, 2004 12:09 PM
In searching for an article about this weapon, I found an email correspondence from some defense-news publication in which it was stated that the OICW was effectively dead as a weapons program. Too bulky, too many fragile electronics (as stated), plus: -- the grenades it fired were too small to be effective -- they could never apparently get the precision airburst feature to work, which is the weapon's big new feature-- you could, in theory, set the precise distance/moment at which the grenade detonated, allowing you to fire past a wall an enemy was hiding behind, but with the grenade blowing up just as it passed the wall, thus injuring or killing the soldier despite his having cover and you not having line-of-sight to the target -- there was an unconfirmed report of the grenade blowing up inside the barrel of the weapon Posted by: ace on August 10, 2004 12:11 PM
By the way, the grenades the OICW fired were 20mm. They've experimented with 25mm. Also apparently the ergonomics of the weapon weren't good. The weapon had the grenade launcher above the carbine barrel, rather than below, which is the customary way to do it. They say they're trying to work on the grenade-firing part of the weapon as a separate weapon, which seems to make more sense to me. Posted by: ace on August 10, 2004 12:16 PM
Well, ace, I donated to the site. So I'm not shy about noting that my birthday comes around within three months, and this featured item would be a cherished, well-received gift. Hint. Hint. Cordially... Posted by: Rick on August 10, 2004 12:29 PM
Yep, the OICW is dead in the water at the moment. The 20mm isn't lethal enough, and the 25mm is too damn heavy for a combined weapon. There will be a shoulder fired semi-automatic clip fed 25mm grenade launcher in the XM-8's stable. Now you will excuse me whilst I go towel off my extremities. Posted by: Mr. Bowen on August 10, 2004 12:58 PM
Fox News/Fox Magazine had a "block" devoted to all the new weapons systems with infrantry and armor focus. Todd Conner trigger pulled the XM8 full auto, turned, grinning like a jack ass eating barbed wire, and I heard, "Eat your fu*king hearts out shitsticks." Was then distracted by Laurie Dhue. Posted by: Mr Bad Example on August 10, 2004 03:29 PM
oops missed the conversation...all i know about this is from an old stars and stripes article anyway, most of the folks here know more about this than i. i hadn't realized the precision airburst weapon had been scrapped. but i'm still excited about the xm8 and the variants. Posted by: francisthegreat on August 10, 2004 04:30 PM
I can't WAIT to see one of these on the range. Posted by: Dave in Texas on August 10, 2004 09:22 PM
Barrett has developed an individual weapon based on the same 25mm (.98 caliber) grenade. I'm in no shape to hump the thing from my car to the range, and the recoil exceeds the Army's procurement limits, but there are situations where it would surely make a difference. Posted by: triticale on August 11, 2004 03:06 PM
Have they come out with the civilian version yet? You know, for home defense? Seriously, that is one cool looking machine. Posted by: RP on August 13, 2004 10:51 AM

The Short Unhappy Life of a Russian Soldier: Why recruits die in 20-30 minutes
Interesting video. Some key parts: drones were responsible for 70-80% of all battlefield deaths in mid-2025, and I bet it's higher now. The Russian army is incredibly corrupt. Men get assigned to the most dangerous frontline units, the "Storm" units, unless they pay a superior $2,000 to be assigned to a different unit. Furthermore, there is often no real training for recruits -- commanders pocket the money that would have gone towards fuel and ammo costs incurred during training. Much "training" consists just of taking a single picture of soldiers doing something soldier-y, like fording a river, and publishing that as proof that the training was done. Even when it is done, training is only two weeks long.

Update to the video of a Russian soldier being spun around and thrown by the machinegun he was operating: The soldier was testing an old, archaic Russian machinegun intended to be mounted to a helicopter. The old gun was pressed into service as a possible anti-drone gun. The Russian army is generally depleted and being forced to bring a lot of old, unreliable weapons and platforms to the front.
