The McLaughlin BlogAn unscripted program discussing issues of the day, moderated by your host, bloviating ex-Jesuit hardass Ace of Spades. ACE OF SPADES: Issue Number One. That blistering anti-Kerry ad by a group of Vietnam veterans calling themselves Swift Boat Vets for Truth. It's a tough, effective ad in which decorated Vietnam war veterans -- many having been awarded the Bronze Star and other decorations -- call John Forbes Kerry a "liar" and allege he "betrayed" his men, and his nation. On a scale of one to ten, one indicating no damage from the ad, ten indicating complete metaphysical destruction, how do you rate the ad's effectiveness and likely impact on the presidential campaign? SAY ANYTHING BLOG: You have to admit, this commercial is going to be hard for Kerry to refute. ... This doesn't look good for John Kerry. [Ace's guess as to rating: 5] ACE: WRONG!!!! Allah? ALLAH PUNDIT: Allah's taking a cautious line on the swift boat vets... [Ace's guess as to rating: 3] ACE: WRONG!!! And don't refer to yourself in the third person. It's presumptuous, even for a deity. Roger "The Dodger" Simon? ROGER L. SIMON: If one person says you're drunk, ignore him. If six people say you're drunk, sit down. I don't think Kerry is going to sit down, but maybe he should. And as Instapundit notes, the candidate asked for it by making his supposed heroism in the Vietnam War, of all things, the centerpiece of his presidential campaign in 2004.... He better have a good answer to these allegations, other than the ad being paid for by Bush People, because that dog don't hunt. We need the truth. [Ace's guess as to rating: 6] ACE: WRONG!!! Spoons!!! SPOONS: I think it quite likely that the representations in this ad are true. An ad like this is dangerous business, though. I can easily see it backfiring. [Ace's guess: 6 or 0 if it backfires; average, 3] ACE: WRONG!!! WILDLY WRONG!!! So wrong, in fact, you're not getting your parking validated. Lorie "Poli Want a Cracker" Byrd!!!! LORIE BYRD/POLIPUNDIT: Speechless! ... This is the most devastating political ad I have ever seen - bar none. ... Then the men who served with him are shown in front of the picture Poli linked to today. They look distinguished, professional, not bitter or wacko. There is no sinister music playing like in so many negative ads. The statement from the man who treated Kerry for one of his purple heart wounds is incredible. The fact that these men would "face the fire" that will surely come with appearing in a controversial campaign ad, in itself, adds tons of credibility to the ad and its message. Just thinking about that ad still takes my breath away. It really is powerful. .... [Ace's guess: 9] INSTAPUNDIT [crosstalk]: Yeah, I'd say that's right. And Kerry played right into this with all the stuff about Vietnam and medals. [Ace's guess: probably a little less enthusiastic than Polipundit; 7] ACE: Instapundit, WRONG!!! Poli-- Right church, wrong pew. Powerline!!! POWERLINE BLOG (HINDROCKET): The ad is powerful, but, in my opinion, not as persuasive as it could be because it is so general. The veterans say that Kerry has lied about his service; the doctor who treated Kerry for the wound that gave rise to his first Purple Heart says Kerry's account is untrue; they say Kerry betrayed his comrades. But there are no details, no facts. Of course, there is only so much you can do in thirty seconds. Despite the lack of detail, the ad is a lot more powerful than anything the Bush campaign has come up with, and I've given the Swift Boat Veterans some money to put it on the air. I hope you will too. [Ace's guess: 5] ACE: METAPHYSICALLY WRONG!!! Details are for follow-up media stories and for books. An advertisement is a medium for conveying a meme, a single idea. Ads don't sell a candidate's health care policy, to the extent such a "policy" even exists; they sell the simple idea that the candidate has a health care policy at all. The ad's power and effectiveness cannot be discounted due to its brevity, no more than a sonnet should have points deducted for not having four more lines. The ad exists to introduce a couter-story to the prevailing Kerry Vietnam myth favored to by the media. And it succeeds brilliantly at introducing that counter-story. It does not prove it; but then, it could not prove it, due to the limitations of the medium. POWERLINE BLOG: But-- ACE: WRONG!!! You had your chance and you BLEW IT! You'll just have to LIVE WITH THAT SHAME for the rest of your life. Florida Cracker!!! FLORIDA CRACKER: Live by Vietnam, die by Vietnam, Mr. Kerry. [Ace's guess: 8] ACE: Your aphorisms are intoxicating. But not quite right. Ryne "My Momma Was Too Poor to Afford Me a Proper First Name" McLaren!!! RYNE McCLAREN: Will this be the moment when photo-ops will no longer be enough for John Kerry? This ad, and others that will surely follow, could be that big. [Ace's guess: 8] ACE: I like the recent convergence. SondraK! SONDRA K: HOLY ****!!!! [Ace's guess: 8.5] ACE: I think that's the most precisely-correct reaction so far. The correct answer is that the ad scores between a 6 and an 8 on the political damage scale. The ad doesn't prove any of the allegations, nor even precisely detail them; but if there's one thing the Democrats have taught us all in the past two years, it's not necessary to prove an allegation for it to be damaging. It is enough to simply assert it enough times that the public begins assuming that at least a good fraction of it is true. [For the record, I think everything they're saying is true-- whether that can be proven, however, is a different story, as is whether a generally-underinformed public can be persuaded to look at the available evidence and make a competent decision.] The tone of the ad-- sober and reasonable -- makes the ferocious charges leveled all the more damning. As Polipundit points out, had this ad been filled with the typical cheeseball conventions of the negative political ad-- creepy synthesizer chords, grainy black-and-white photos -- it would have diminished the ad's power. Instead, each of the heroic Vietnam veterans is simply allowed to speak as a chyron displays their name, rank, and decorations earned in battle. The ad is potentially devastating. Vietnam is John Kerry's only claim on the White House. If that "fortress" becomes damaged by the public beginning to suspect that at least part of what these men say is true (just as the Democrats have convinced the public, absent strong evidence, to believe at least part of their "Bush lied, kids died" thesis), then Kerry's support will drop by two to four points -- enough to swing a tight election. And Kerry will be forced to answer difficult questions about how exactly he did come to be transferred to the safety of a Pentagon office after serving only four months in Vietnam. He cannot be helped by answering such questions, even if he's telling the truth. Because the truth of the matter is -- no matter how much the media wants to hide it -- that John Kerry began filing Paperwork over Papercuts from the moment he got into 'Nam in order to get his rich pampered white ass home as soon as possible. Even if he did nothing illegal, that's not the part of his Vietnam Legend he wishes the public to be focusing on. And that doesn't even take into account his slanderous blood-libels against his fellow veterans. All that crap about widespread atrocities -- which Kerry claimed to have personally witnessed -- is all preserved on videotape. The media has been hell-bent to ignore Kerry's vicious pro-enemy lies until now. This ad could force them to actually examine them. How damaging the ad will be depends on the coming weeks-- how frequently the ad is run, how disciplined the media is in closing ranks, mafia-like, around their wounded liberal capo. Assuming minor penetration, the ad will score a hit, a palpable hit, but not a deadly one. With actual media follow-up -- and this does have the potential for a major shitstorm-- Kerry could be politically crippled in a month. Update-- The Drudge Factor: Well, Drudge still features this as his big banner headline, so it looks like this should be the big story of tomorrow as the world wakes up. Sleep late. Sleep till 2:00 pm. Leave that banner up, Drudge. Leave that banner up. posted by Ace at 02:19 AM
Comments"Rating: 3"? A solid 6, my friend. I'm playing it close to the vest because if even a few small details of these guys' stories don't check out, our enlightened media will crucify them and dismiss the whole thing out of hand. If you want to take a leftist candidate down, there's no margin for error. Let's hope they're equal to the task. I note in passing my disappointment that I received no trademark McLaughlin-by-way-of-Carvey nickname. (E.g., Eleanor "Gee, I think you're swell-anor" Clift.) Although I grant that "Allah" isn't the easiest handle to riff on. Posted by: Allah on August 5, 2004 03:02 AM
It's just so fucking weird to see a man from a political movement and generation that DEFINED itself by its opposition to the Vietnam War, and no doubt harbored pride and self-righteousness from that opposition, turn about face and TOUT participation in that war........in order to demonstrate they're capable of leading in another war they deny even exists. The contradictions are too much for me to handle. Posted by: Moonbat_One on August 5, 2004 03:09 AM
Genius. Pure genius. I should buy you and the Moon God a drink. Posted by: someone on August 5, 2004 04:15 AM
Well, the liberals have their response for this damaging ad ... today, all the news is about those dirt-bag bands going on tour. Bad news? DISTRACT, DISTRACT. Or, should I say, the timing of the tour announcements are suspiciously timed? Posted by: Carin on August 5, 2004 09:33 AM
That analysis was a work of art. Posted by: milkmaid on August 5, 2004 09:34 AM
Sure, the libs can spout off whatever they want and the media will carry on with it but it's different for conservatives; the SwiftVets will have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that what they say is true. And regardless, the proof won't be enough for the media. My (reserved, hope it's not true but could be) prediction is that this will not have any effect on Kerry because the media will claim it is unsubstantiated and will ignore it unless the media can find a hole in any of the stories to exploit. Having said that, I haven't seen the ad. I plan to later today. I just hope it gets equal play time to the populace like the band tour will. hinzman Posted by: hinzman on August 5, 2004 10:18 AM
Wrong! Wait . . . I mean: Correct, sir! Posted by: ccwbass on August 5, 2004 10:22 AM
This bust in Albany should prove interesting mostly due to its "timing" something tells me the dems wont be bitchin' too much . Posted by: Jennifer on August 5, 2004 10:43 AM
Ace, how about some predictions on how the nightly news will try to spin the revelations. Posted by: rdbrewer on August 5, 2004 10:46 AM
The correct answer is between a 6 and an 8? Wouldn't that be, ummm...7? Posted by: Rob on August 5, 2004 10:50 AM
I was on a buoy tender and a tug boat in the Coast Gurad. The former does 7 knots and the latter 11. When we get to the issue of what slow boat veterans think, I'll weigh in. Posted by: Ken J on August 5, 2004 11:13 AM
Ace, nice theme and structure for link-whoring. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Seriously, it's a genuine compliment. Like the Commisar's yearbook or the original blogistan map, but with far more insight, work, and genuine thought/analysis going into it. Practically Belmont Club in the analysis department, actually. This should get you some well-deserved attention (and not just the banal trackback variety). Good show old man. Posted by: hobgoblin on August 5, 2004 11:28 AM
I bet John Kerry had his butler kick the t.v. in when he saw that ad. Posted by: Golden Boy on August 5, 2004 12:00 PM
Mainstream media watch: Seattle Times editorial - "This Band of Brothers Has Different View of Kerry" by Collin Levey It will be interesting to see where the cracks in the media dike first appear. I think this will be a major factor in the following ways: 1) The Nobody-Likes-Kerry negative feedback loop. The press have been biting their tongues over this guy the whole campaign. If he starts to give of the whiff of "can't win", they will begin to unload on him. At that point, not only will they be venting spleen over what a jerk he is, but also over how he will be perceived as blowing a winnable election for the Democrats. The process feeds on itself resulting in candidate implosion. This is not impossible, but I rate it as only a1 in 10 chance of actually happening. 2) You can’t stop them. Given the current campaign finance laws, there simply isn't a way to keep this stuff off the air. Hell, all they really have to do is get the ad to play in Columbus, OH, and a couple of cities in Florida, and they have changed the dynamic of the race. A 2% swing in each of those states is trivial in terms of the popular vote, but it would be potentially decisive in the electoral college. Chance of effective information blockade, minimal. 3) Finally, and most likely, is that this forces Kerry to defend himself. The charge is too credible to go unanswered. The answering of the charge is news that has to dominate a news cycle (or else the charge hasn't been effectively answered), and surrogates probably won’t be adequate. Once it has dominated a news cycle, Kerry's main rationale for being elected has been tarnished, and it could only be restored if it turns out that these guys are a bunch of flat-out liars. When we see Kerry publicly refuting this charge, then I'd say the election is over except for outside events (mainly terrorists) and the debates. Posted by: David on August 5, 2004 12:55 PM
I think someone could score a "10" if they would make an ad leaving Kerry's war record alone and slam him instead for his anti-American after-war activities. Pictures of him throwing his ribbons, etc. etc. That slice of history is so dark and so stark, it would be chilling ... Kerry, no friend of America ... Posted by: Joanna on August 5, 2004 01:06 PM
>this forces Kerry to defend himself. I don't really think it does. He will just scream "dirty tricks" "attack" "attack" Posted by: on August 5, 2004 01:08 PM
The spin now is that none of the vets criticising Kerry actually served on his boat (see Drudge story re McCain angry). Does anyone know how many of the Swiftvets against Kerry were on his boat? That seems to me the most important thing in defending or refuting the ad. Posted by: Jeff K on August 5, 2004 01:32 PM
Does anyone know how many of the Swiftvets against Kerry were on his boat? That seems to me the most important thing in defending or refuting the ad. Not a single one. Posted by: Batman on August 5, 2004 01:41 PM
Well if none of guys in the ad were actually on Kerry's boat it seems pretty obvious to me that the Dems will be able to spin this their way. Sounds like it will be a 3 on your scale Ace. However, I've heard conflicting stories on just which vets are for and against Kerry. Is it true that most of the guys who were on his boat don't support him now? If so are they talking about it in public? If this thing is going to take off it matters a hell of lot what the guys who were actually on Kerry's boat are saying. Not so much the guys who happened to be in Vietnam at the time. Posted by: Jeff K on August 5, 2004 02:02 PM
One of them is the doctor who treated Kerry's flesh wound that gave him his first Purple Heart. Most of them are fellow officers that served with him, most likely during the 6 months BEFORE he took over the swiftboat. Posted by: Smack on August 5, 2004 02:12 PM
Every single soldier who was on Kerry's boat with him, support him. Except, of course, the one who is dead. Posted by: Batman on August 5, 2004 02:20 PM
WRONG!!! One of Kerry's boatmates is as against him as any of these guys. But keep repeating that, dude. Just keep saying it over and over again. Posted by: ace on August 5, 2004 02:23 PM
You don't need to be on Kerry's boat to be a an eyewitness to certain exploits. These old guys are limiting their testimony to what they saw. You nincompoops are (unwittingly, of course) setting up a straw man test for credibility. I forgive you for not knowing better. Posted by: rdbrewer on August 5, 2004 02:56 PM
Among the swift boat vets that are not Kerry fans are the skipper he replaced ... the one who actually experienced the battle Kerry's folks claimed ... and the skipper that replaced Kerry after his very short term Posted by: pete on August 5, 2004 03:23 PM
Ace: You're right. Sorry. Stephen M. Gardner is the lone crewmember who served under Kerry who's against him. Excerpt: Which brought the interview to the crux of Gardner’s beef against Kerry. Gardner—who remembers no important dates or times or locales—claims that Kerry once threatened him with a court martial. The incident happened when Gardner, who told me he had “no trouble shooting gooks,” saw a Viet Cong guerilla with an AK-47 in a boat and started firing. “I lay the hammer down on him,” Gardner explains. “I just put a finger on the gun: boom, boom, boom, boom. He’s done. He got flipped out of the boat, he went straight down. That’s when Kerry came running out of the guntub screaming ‘ceasefire, ceasefire, ceasefire.’ Then he turned to me and said, ‘I ought to have you court-martialed for shooting.’ I said, ‘Hmmph…sorry big boy. When somebody brings a gun up on me I’m gonna shoot and I’ll ask questions later ‘cause I ain’t goin’ back in a body bag.’” Posted by: Batman on August 5, 2004 03:30 PM

Wow, Batman, impressive. Kerry threatens to court-martial a man for shooting an armed enemy, then gets himself a medal for shooting an UNarmed enemy. That convinces me! I'm gonna pull a Sully and vote Kerry now! Posted by: Brian B on August 5, 2004 07:46 PM

Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. Robinson voice "where's your cuck now?" I posted his post on twitter and it's gotten 25K views so far. Thanks, Smell the Glove Chris

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source" Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held. Basil the Great
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.
Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing. Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult. Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending. (((Dan Hodges))) Nick Lowles
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98. Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years. Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45 Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%. I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens. REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs. Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
