Yet ANOTHER Election Stolen!

Poor Democrats. They can't win for losing.

NBC canceling 'West Wing' after 7 seasons
I demand a recount! I want to make sure every vote is counted. How do we know that the evil Diebold voting machines used by the NBC executives who voted to cancel this show actually counted the votes? How do we know that Dick Cheney did not hack into the computer to change the results? You must prove a negative to satisfy my conspiracy bloodlust.

This is horrible. What will Liberals do without their fantasy, alternate reality? Man, talk about harshing their groove.

At least one day a week they could turn the TV on and bask in the glow of the way things SHOULD be, if it wasn't for that damn puppet, ChimpyMcHitlerBurton Bush and his black hearted masters! The cold hand of government repression is upon the TV industry. Dissent is no longer tolerated.

Martin Sheen in '08!

My Bizarre Analogy Update From Dave At Garfield Ridge: Hearing about the cancellation made me think up an analogy this morning: the West Wing was the television equivalent of Andrew Sullivan.

In the beginning, it was must-see/must-read. Even if you didn't agree with everything that was said, you had to admire the craft. The writing was excellent, really whip-smart stuff, and if you lived inside the Beltway, you simply had to tune in.

But then, ratings declined, sweep stunts got introduced (terrorist kidnappings and/or gay marriage obsessions), and both lost their focus. Even attempts to reinvent the formula (presidential campaigns, guest bloggers, moves to Time Magazine) didn't pay off. All attempts at political fairness were swept away as the liberal bias, previously secondary to good writing, moved to the foreground. Nothing could be done to salvage things-- what was once essential viewing/reading became laughably non-essential, a punchline.

And so here we are, where both go away with a whimper. Well, okay, Sullivan's still writing. Or so some people tell me.

Not only that, but the Geena Davis show is losing audience fast. It probably won't make it through the spring.

Ouch.

You mean Dick Cheney DIDN'T hack into the voting machines?

What, to simple? He sent his low level lackeys to do it?

Posted by: Sinner on January 23, 2006 08:32 AM

This was actually a decent show for a couple of years. Once they got full of themselves, it went downhill.

I was turned off when they had a show about tax cuts. They had one of the people giving a lecture to other staffers about their tax plan. They had 4 columns, each with a differnt income and tax rate. The first was something like $20,000 and a 15% rate. The character said, "This guy pays 15% times 20,000 or $3000 in income tax." Of course, that's not hpw tax is figured. He went on to the next two columns of something like 40,000 and 60,000 and did the same thing. Of course he didn't mention that those rates are MARGINAL rates and not total rates. He also didn't factor in exemptions and deductions.

He then got to the fourth column which was $16,000,000 and a 40% tax rate. He conveniently failed to make the same tax calculation which would have yielded $6,400,000. Instead he said, "We are only asking them to contirbute a measly little 1% more so that we can cut taxes for everyone else."

I wrote to the producers of the show pointing out their blatant distortion of our tax system. For some reason, I never heard back. But, then again, I never watched their show again, so I guess it evened out.

Posted by: Steve L. on January 23, 2006 08:36 AM

I never got into that show. It is an organ of the liberal/ Democratic Party and nothing more. Jeanneane Garafalo's (sp?) character was so like her in real life--gobsmackingly vile. She sealed the coffin for that show.

Jack Bauer should be loosed on their pansy asses during the last episode.

Posted by: KevlarChick on January 23, 2006 08:47 AM

West Wing? Never watched a full episode. Never liked that particaular style of drama -- two or three people speeking at each other in a fast-paced monotonous tone while walking down a hallway. It's silly. What are these people, robots? (Or, as Dr. Zoidberg would say, robits.

Can someone tell me why Don Imus is still on the air?
I really don't get it. What's his appeal?

Imus on MSNBC is like watching a freak show. A grown man, in the autumn of his years, who dresses like a 6 year old boy, is surrounded by cackling ninnies jumping through hoops seeking their master's approval.

You mean something like this?

There's a show called "West Wing?" Is it a sitcom?

Posted by: Border Reiver on January 23, 2006 09:38 AM

Did anyone catch Sen. Windsurfer on ABC with George Stuffitinmyass?

Man, did Kerry look French, or what.
And he sure was shrill. He sounds more and more like Algore everyday.

It was funny reading comments at jumptheshark.com about Aaron Sorkin's previous show, Sports Night. After many commenters had complained about the show's blatant liberal messages, a liberal commenter came back with:

What exactly are the preachy, liberal ideals forced upon the hapless viewer in this show?? Granted the music can be a maudlin at times, but the writing is some of the most intelligent on television (currently in repeats on Comedy Central). I guess if one is forced to think or feel during a "comedy" it must be liberal!!

and another:
Too liberal?? What, exactly, is too liberal?

and another:
What's up with all the whiney conservatives complaining about this supposed propaganda devise? What Sorkin propaganda did SportsNight espouse?

There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Posted by: geoff on January 23, 2006 10:09 AM

I enjoy the West Wing because they show the process of things. I agree the liberal garbage annoys me but I enjoyed watching how things worked. Of course now in the Presidential campaign they have a "Republican" played by Alan Alda running for President who has the same views as Arnold in CA, pro-choice, non-religious, etc. The implication is that the only acceptable Republicans are ones like Rudy Guiliani who are socially liberal but fiscally conservative.

And also Richard Spencer died and he was the best actor on the show.

Posted by: bcb0225 on January 23, 2006 10:12 AM

I actually started watching WW this year, my 16-year old daughter joined me, and we both like it, and it is not as preachily liberal as I thought it would be (even though it is obviously a liberal fantasy: namely, the Dems are not national laughingstocks on defense issues and the Republican presidential candidate is pro-abortion and doesn't like Christian conservatives). I think they may have toned down their preachiness from earlier years. At any rate, I'm sorry to see it go.

Posted by: OregonMuse on January 23, 2006 10:24 AM

OregonMuse, check out the first couple of seasons on DVD. It really was a sharp, cleverly-written show. What you're watching now is a pale shadow of its former self.

I was saddened by the cancellation of West Wing three years ago; y'know, when they decided to stop being entertaining.

Posted by: Pompous on January 23, 2006 10:32 AM

West Wing, when it could refrain from priostitute sub-plots, and the like, was a well produced, directed and written show. I watched even as I cringed with some of the feel-good politics they espoused.

The transitions from scene to scene were some of the best on tv. The timing was excellent. I'm also glad to see it go, after the Sorokin/Schlamme period ended.

Posted by: Tom M on January 23, 2006 11:01 AM

West Wing was a fantastic show for the first few seasons. When Sorkin left, the writing got less interesting, and the kidnapping plot nonsense is what finally drove me away from the show. The political preachiness was bearable, but the bad writing and increasingly-soap operaish plotlines were just too much to take.

Posted by: Slublog on January 23, 2006 11:04 AM

Loose sh*t - prostitute - how did I mess that one up?

Posted by: Tom M on January 23, 2006 11:07 AM

Don't miss Commander and Chef, Sorkin's newest drama about the adventures of the senior cook aboard the HMS Poufter.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on January 23, 2006 11:09 AM

The first couple of seasons were OK - with Slick Willy in the White House, Jed Bartlett was actually a pretty appealing Pres, and you always knew that Leo was there to provide some adult supervision.

Posted by: holdfast on January 23, 2006 11:24 AM

I must admit that I enjoyed the first three seasons and tuned in occasionally for the rest. When it was good it was awesome and the late John Spencer was always mind-blowing. Anyone who's seen him explain his alcoholism is likely to remember that moment for a looong time.

Yeah, it was Democart Porn for the most part. But that made those rare moments of sobriety all the more entertaining. Like Alan Alda advocating drilling in the ANWAR or Toby bitchslapping activist Moonbats. Good times.

Time to put it out of its misery.

Back a few years ago MARTIN SHEEN took part in a antiwar protest in which he put duct tape with PEACE written on it over his mouth well now he can put the same duct tape over his mouth put use the word CHUMP instead

Posted by: spurwing plover on January 23, 2006 11:28 AM

WW was a well-written show, but its glory days are long past. Time to pull the plug, I think. Incidentally, WaPo has a great article on the cancellation, where Martin Sheen explains that the show was always "dead center" politically; it was the country that shifted after Bush snuck into the white House.

Kind of a West Wing-centric view of the political spectrum.

Posted by: utron on January 23, 2006 11:28 AM

Never liked that particaular style of drama -- two or three people speeking at each other in a fast-paced monotonous tone while walking down a hallway.

Same here -- first and last time I watched it, it seemed like a cross between the Sunday talk shows (which I also can't stand) and The Blair Witch Project.

Posted by: JSinger on January 23, 2006 11:38 AM

YES! I've made it though another show w/o tuning in ONCE. 7 years isn't a personal record, but still something to be proud of.

Posted by: carin on January 23, 2006 11:48 AM

Would "tuning in" be considered an anachronism? Funny how we still use that expression. I suppose technically cable satellite converters use some form of tuning, but my TV has been tuned into Channel 3 for 6 years.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on January 23, 2006 11:54 AM

carin:

Ditto here too -- never saw a single episode. It struck me as a series version of The American President. (Democrats always get to be president in movies and on TV; Republicans get to be president in real life. I guess it's a fair trade).

Are we starting a dead pool for Commander In Chief?

Eh. As long as Monk and BSG are on. If it weren't for those two shows, I would just get rid of my television altogether.

Posted by: Monty on January 23, 2006 12:21 PM

At least the West Wing was more plausible than Fox News.

Posted by: scarshapedstar on January 23, 2006 12:21 PM

"The West Wing" is still ON?

Network television is $HIT, people. Even "24" -- the only show I've made a point to watch (for the first time this season) -- is only good when compared to all the other crap that passes as entertainment these days.

I'm also stuck with "Amercian Idol" because I watch it with my daughters as a family thing, and I'm stuck on Full Cringe Mode the entire time. Really, why doesn't Fox just take a camera to the local nuthouse and film the mentally challenged instead? It would be cheaper and the audience would be forced to realize that they're sitting at home and laughing at a bunch of sad, hopeless wretches. Oh, but THAT would be PI.

Posted by: bbeck on January 23, 2006 12:23 PM

I never got into WW and I could never get into Commander in Chief from the very beginning. They would do HD promos for the the show during Monday night football and it was very disturbing. What the hell happened to Geena Davis's face? HD does not help Geena Davis at all. I could not watch the show at all.

Posted by: Shtetl G on January 23, 2006 12:23 PM

Sure, it was a liberal wet dream at times but I always enjoy watching the reruns on Bravo.

John Spencer's Leo was a good character. So was Rob Lowe's Sam Seaborn and Emily Proctor's token GOPer. The show went downhill once they left.

Never understood how the Toby charcter would have lasted 2 months though.

Posted by: Bob on January 23, 2006 12:23 PM

I never watched it; Sheen's presence was enough by itself to keep me away - his protest antics were simultaneously pointless and hysterical and I have to assume the same to be true of the producers' political views since his podium came in large part from his role on their show.

Buh-bye, and may Geena's hard-choice-dodging farce not be far behind.

The only presidential show I'd watch is one that shows the damned-if-you-do/damned-if-you-don't-dilemma routinely faced by modern presidents and gives equal airtime to the idiots on both sides of the aisle and the real life problems they exacerbate or sometimes cause - including the part played by the clueless media. Also they'd need to show foreign governments esp incl the UN as something less than immortal/superior.

Meaning I'll be scanning the channels for a prez drama series when I look out the window and see pigs flapping past.

Posted by: Scott on January 23, 2006 12:34 PM

Andrew who?

Posted by: Sean M. on January 23, 2006 01:11 PM

I probably watched the show once, in the early years.

The show I enjoy, although it's always trying to inject the liberal lesson du jour, is Boston Legal. My husband & I crack up at William Shatner!! He saves the show!

Posted by: Ruth on January 23, 2006 01:15 PM

At least the West Wing was more plausible than Fox News.

Oh, a Fox News slam! How refreshing! How original!

Never heard that before!

Posted by: Lee Atwater on January 23, 2006 01:19 PM

Lee Atwater:

Yeah, mentioning Fox News to a leftie is like prodding a mean dog with a stick. They just can't help going into a foaming-spittle rage! Faux News seems to be the favored insult, but you'd think they could come up with something more clever -- especially since the network is hammering CNN and MSNBC like hot horseshoes in the ratings.

What really cracks me up is when I hear some DU denizen slamming on CNN for being -- get this -- too conservative. I mean, that's the kind of entertainment TV just can't provide anymore!

Whatever. Fox News still has the best looking anchor-cupcakes around. I usually watch it with the television muted. I bet if there was enough incentive, Rupert Murdoch would order his news-bimbos to work naked. I live for that day.

"...you'd think they could come up with something more clever -- especially since the network is hammering CNN and MSNBC like hot horseshoes in the ratings."

Monty, you forget that the people in question consider themselves more intelligent, refined, and aware than the average bear. If you consider the average person in this country to be stupid, racist, narrow minded, etc, the ratings success of Fox News merely confirms your low opinion of it.

Posted by: steve_in_hb on January 23, 2006 02:07 PM

Hey Monty, thanks for the poetry slam. I now read Spurwing Plover in a whole new light. And you're absolutely right, Plover is a f'n genius. e.e. cummings is a barnyard hack compared to our Spurwing.

The whole plot of the movie concerns an angel's intervention, showing George what everyone's life would be like without him in it. If you cut the scenes of him thinking about exiting his life, then what is even the point of the movie?
Remember when we naively thought that Bezos and Amazon were generally on the right side of things? How absurd we were.
I re-watched The Name of the Rose this past year on Amazon and noticed that the semi-important scene of Christian Slater's character losing his virginity to a peasant girl were cut out. My thought was that Amazon must be using a cut of the movie shown on TV or something. I don't know if Amazon is aware it is running censored content, or if they're demanding these cuts, or seeking out versions of the film that remove politically-sensitive material. Whatever the reason, they should be ashamed and run the actual movies again. What is the point of any communications platform that engages in censorship?
