Pelosi & Other Lower-Ranking Dems Knew of NSA Intercepts In 2001

You've got to be kidding me. Pelosi's own letter indicates she knew:

In the October 2001 letter, Pelosi said she was told in a briefing that month that the agency "had been operating since the Sept. 11 attacks with an expansive view" of its authorities "to the conduct of electronic surveillance under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and related statutes, orders, regulations and guidelines."

"I am concerned whether, and to what extent, the National Security Agency has received specific presidential authorization for the operations you are conducting," Pelosi, then the top Democrat on the intelligence panel, wrote Hayden.

Notice her problem doesn't seem to be with the program itself. It seems to be over whether it was lawfully approved by the President. Which it seems to have been.

Either that or her only real concern was whether or not she could later use this disclosure to make an opportunistic attack on Bush.

And she didn't say anything before now, did she?

Ace, are you trying to tell me that Pelosi and company are being disingenuous about the whole NSA dustup? Do you think that their real aim is to discredit and politically damage the President in order to make political gains?

My God, you are so unfair to these good people!
You neocon Bastard!

I love the picture of the general who heads the NSA.

If that dude isn't a lizardoid alien overlord in disguise, I don't know who could be.

Pelosi is one reason why I'll never go back to CA. She is also a reason why I will never, ever vote Democrat ever because outside of Lieberman, not a single one has a spine that could defend this country. Until the Dem's realize we are at war and stop using this stuff for political gain (and thereby damaging our reputation, war effort and national security) they will never win a big election again. That's another thing. We need to punish the hell out of these leakers and I'm not talking Sandy Berger punishment either. That was a joke. I have a secret clearance and if I only did a 1/10th of what Berger did, I'd be chipping rocks for a long time in Leavenworth, KS. He got a few years probation and a $50K fine???? Give me a break. Quit coddling the leakers and apply the rule of law.

I saw the same story this morning and had pretty much the same reaction.

I'm dying for someone to ask Pelosi or Jay Rockefeller why, if they knew about this program the whole stinking time, they didn't do or say anything at all about it in the past four years. What, exactly, were they waiting for?

Posted by: Jimmie on January 4, 2006 09:28 AM

Jimmie,
They were waiting for the NY Times to give the OK. You know they like to sit on this stuff until a book is ready to come out.

Posted by: LCDR MacKay on January 4, 2006 09:30 AM

The Dems and Pelosi specifically knew this all along. They don't care, all that matters to them is that they got to smear the president for a period of time and they know that there will be no MSM backlash for them.
They will shortly drop this issue and it will all quietly go away like so many other times.

I know Chicago is famous for dead people voting, but I think that California has done them one better and actually elected one of the living dead. Look at the woman.

When Hell is full - Pelosi will walk the earth.

Posted by: on January 4, 2006 09:37 AM

This whole issue is a loser for the Dems. If they think that arguing that the president took extrodinary steps to protect the US from terrorists is a winner for them then they are even more out of touch then I had imagined. If they believe that saying those actions are illegal when they have clearly known about it for years and did squat then they are dumber than I had imagined.

Since I love zombie movies, and since you didn't sign your post, I'm going to steal that quote . . . mmkay?

Posted by: adolfo velasquez on January 4, 2006 10:09 AM

LCDR MacKay,
Don't we already have one California Senator who's written a book? I'm pretty sure there's something in the Constitution about both Senators from a state not inflicting bad fiction on America at the same time.

I did like her kid's documentary Travels With George.

Posted by: on January 4, 2006 10:51 AM

The line from the Pelosi/Rockefeller camp will be "We were misled" in the briefings.

Aren't elected officials supposed to do a little digging and thinking on their own?

Posted by: opine6 on January 4, 2006 10:56 AM

So your argument is that the Democrats should have stopped Republican lawbreakers... so it's the Dems' fault?

So your argument is that the Democrats should have stopped Republican lawbreakers... so it's the Dems' fault?

No, the argument is that only a complete dolt would think any laws were broken in this regard. - Thomas Jefferson

"So your argument is that the Democrats should have stopped Republican lawbreakers... so it's the Dems' fault?"

The argument is that no one should take Pelosi seriously when she screeches about this for purely partisan reasons.

Important Message from Recent Convert to Christianity and Yet Super-Serious Christian Tuq'r Qarlson: Actually Muslims love Jesus, it's Trump and his neocons who hate him
Tucker Carlson Network
@TCNetwork

The people in charge [Jews, of course -- ace] don't want you to know this, but Muslims love Jesus.

Islam reveres Him as a major prophet and messenger of the Lord, believes He performed miracles, and states that He will return to Earth to defeat the Antichrist. That's why Donald Trump's painting depicting himself as the Son of God offended the president of Iran. It was an attack on his religion as well as Christianity.

Trump's trolling tweet was ill-advised, but Tucker is just lying when he claims the Christianity-hating President of Iran was "offended" by this.
He's one step away from announcing his official conversion to Islam. He literally never stops praising Islam. Well, he suddenly became Christian two years ago, there's not much stopping him from converting again.
You can track Tuq'r's official conversion to Islam with this Bingo card.
