Blame Canada America: Rocketing Toronto Gunshot Deaths Pinned On America's "Export of Violence"

Guys, give us a break. Without the export of violence our trade deficit would be even worse.

They don't say we're exporting actual criminals. Apparently it's just a murderous frisson emanating up to Canada from her thuggish gun-lovin' neighbor to the South. Well, that and a lot of guns flowing north.

Canadian officials, seeking to make sense of another fatal shooting in what has been a record year for gun-related deaths, said Tuesday that along with a host of social ills, part of the problem stemmed from what they said was the United States exporting its violence. ...

While many Canadians take pride in Canadian cities being less violent than their American counterparts, Toronto has seen 78 murders this year, including a record 52 gun-related deaths -- almost twice as many as last year.

...

"It's a sign that the lack of gun laws in the U.S. is allowing guns to flood across the border that are literally being used to kill people in the streets of Toronto," Miller said.

Miller said Toronto, a city of nearly three million, is still very safe compared to most American cities, but the illegal flow of weapons from the United States is causing the noticeable rise in gun violence.

"The U.S. is exporting its problem of violence to the streets of Toronto," he said.

Hold on. At most we're exporting guns. Which isn't the same as "violence." I hate to get all NRA here, but a gun doesn't just fire itself, unless maybe it's owned by a Hemmingway or a William Burroughs.

Miller said that while almost every other crime in Toronto is down, the supply of guns has increased and half of them come from the United States.

Half of the increase in gun supply? I think that's probably what he/the reporter means. It could be that gun supplies have gone up 10% or so, and the US is blamed for half of that uptick. Or 5%.

In any event, isn't Canada fairly well-stocked with guns as it is? The only thing I took away from Bowling for Columbine (apart from how sad it is to watch an obese man trying to be funny) is that Canada had a lot of guns and was, at least in the past, pretty responsible with them.

Miller said the availability of stolen Canadian guns is another problem, and that poverty in certain Toronto neighborhoods is a root cause.

"There are neighborhoods in Toronto where young people face barriers of poverty, discrimination and don't have real hope and opportunity. The kind of programs that we once took for granted in Canada that would reach out to young people have systematically disappeared over the past decade and I think that gun violence is a symptom of a much bigger problem," Miller said.

Ahhhh... so it turns out the "root cause" is actually what it always is-- young people with litle hope or economic prospects but a bit of .38 caliber ambition.

I wonder if we'll be blamed for that part. America invented urban dispair around 1880, and our corporate-crime complex has been marketing it around the world since then.

It is very hard to be both a demogue and a whinny wussy at the same time, but somehow Paul Martin manages it.

It must be a Canadian thing and we wouldn't understand.

Miller said Toronto, a city of nearly three million, is still very safe compared to most American cities, but the illegal flow of weapons from the United States is causing the noticeable rise in gun violence.

"The U.S. is exporting its problem of violence to the streets of Toronto," he said.

So the mayor of Toronto contends that Canadian border control is so lax as to allow an alarming number of weapons to flow over the Canadian/U.S. border. But somehow this is the United States fault. How does a grown man with such highly developed displacement disorder get elected the mayor of a major Canadian city, anyway? Oh wait, I've already answered the question...

Posted by: Tongueboy on December 28, 2005 01:29 PM

Miller said that while almost every other crime in Toronto is down

hmmm. more guns maybe? would be interesting to see the breakdown on who's getting shot for what.

Good thing you crossed out "thuggish" - it's racist, you know. ;-)

Posted by: iamfelix on December 28, 2005 01:41 PM

This is typical dipshit liberal sociology think. An increase of guns does not necessarily lead to an increase in violence. Here in America, the highest crime rates belong in major urban centers that have the most restrictive firearms laws, i.e. NYC, DC, Detroit. An increase in violence in Toronto is most likely attributable to an increasing gang presence there, not the dreaded US export of "violence". Martin wants his crime down, tell the mayor of Toronto to unleash his cops.

There was a school shooting (college, I think) in Germany a couple of years ago. The ninnies in Germany had the balls to blame America for starting the trend.

Germany started two world wars in the first half of the 20th century, and was so efficient in the slaughter of innocents it managed to almost singlehandedly exterminate a race of people in less than a decade.

Posted by: Bart on December 28, 2005 01:42 PM

The people who are shooting one another are black gang bangers. Nobody says so but thats who they are. Unfortunately they are bad shots and bystanders are getting hit. How this relates to gun control is beyond me. (other than more practice at the range would make everyone safer)

Posted by: Bobonthebellbuoy on December 28, 2005 01:50 PM

Yeah, it probably is due to an increase in gangbangers.

Ironically, Martin's proposed handgun ban is causing a huge increase in handgun sales to people who are stocking up in hopes the ban won't be retroactive, and gunshops are importing more to keep up with demand. Of course those lawful purchasers are not the ones committing the crimes.

Posted by: stace on December 28, 2005 01:55 PM

I like how the US is portrayed as a 'pusher' - forcing guns into the hands of morally helpless Canadians. Canada is not "importing" the violence; the US, rather, is "exporting" it to Canada against Canada's will. Didn't know you could do that.

Posted by: geoff on December 28, 2005 02:05 PM

Mushy border security allows handguns to flow from the US to Canada and for terrorists to flow from Canada to the US. Advantage Cananda.

Posted by: JackStraw on December 28, 2005 02:34 PM

Just like canada to blame the USA for their high crime rate becuase their politicians are a bunch of lilyplums and liberal idiots DUDLY DORIGHT eat your heart out

Canada? That place still there?

Who knew?

Posted by: fugazi on December 28, 2005 04:38 PM

Canada? Who goes that far north anymore?

Posted by: rls on December 28, 2005 04:45 PM

Hey, if they stop buyin' it, I'll stop sellin' it.

Posted by: Acme Violence Exporters, LLC on December 28, 2005 05:30 PM

Gun crime always goes up when severe anti-gun laws are passed (Canada's recent history) because there are fewer lawfully possessed guns that end up getting stolen by criminals. As a result, a more sophisticated black market in gun arises to satisfy the demand for guns by criminals, generally flowing along the same trade paths as illegal drugs. This has been particularly stark in England, where almost total civilian disarmament led to the development of a massive black market in Eastern European military handguns (like the little .380 and 9mm Makarov's) supplied by ex communist gangsters. The same thing will happen anywhere. It is simply not possible to disarm criminals by restricting lawful gun ownership. They don't come by their guns lawfully in the first place. Duh.

Posted by: Alec Rawls on December 28, 2005 05:35 PM

And people wonder why the US and Canada have such strained relations.

Although some time back, our ambassador in Canada totally chewed the Canadian government out. When the Canadian press got all indignant about it, he stuck by his guns. Good guy.

I have no pity for anyone who blames others for one's problems. No one is so powerless that they are unavoidably at the utter mercy of external forces without the ability to make changes in one's sphere of influence. Arab states and third world states do the same thing. As long as they do it, they'll remain down. If this is Canada's new thought-process, it cannot be good for Canada.

Being Canadian is tough these days. The paper bag I have to put on my head every time our political elites speak is like...what you Americans have to do every time a Democrat speaks.

We are not all left wing nutbars up here. We have a few more leftoid freakoids than you do, thanks in part to an even bigger US export than 'violence', namely left wing, draft dodging, gutless wonder peaceniks.

Shut up about Canadians, or else: Pelosi, Reid, Kos, Teddy Kennedy...need I say more?

Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. -- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.

@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
