Charge: Hard-Line Islamic Workers At Egyptian Embassy Denying Visas To Coptic Christians

They're Egyptians, not Americans:

The State Department has launched an investigation into whether hard-line Islamic employees at the U.S Embassy in Egypt are working behind the scenes to deny visas to Coptic Christians, The Post has learned.

State Department officials are closely examining 15 to 20 Egyptian employees of the embassy's consular section after top officials received complaints from lawyers and human-rights groups about discriminatory behavior toward the Copts seeking visas to the United States, sources said.

Hundreds, possibly thousands, may have been wrongly denied visas, sources said.

...

Among those making complaints to the State Department is a Christian man who was seeking to donate a kidney to an uncle in New Jersey.

He says he was twice told to remove the cross he was wearing if he wanted a visa. He refused and was denied a visa.

...

There have also been complaints that these employees keep posters in the embassy promoting supporters of the Hamas terror group.

What the hell is the problem with the State Department? It's nice that they've begun an investigation, but what the hell are these people doing collecting money from the US government and, perhaps, jeopardizing embassy security?

Just business as usual for the State Department. They serve themselves first, America last.

I hate to say it, but almost everybody I've ever met abroad who works for the US government in any capacity (mostly State) was either a far-left wingnut or a completely pessimistic "realpolitik" amoral jerk. It's very depressing.

Unfortunately, this sort of discrimination against Christians is far from isolated. It's happening now in Iraq, according to Juan Cole. The recent election results in Iraq do not bode well for the Christian minority, because of the rise of SCIRI and DAWA. Cole points out this weird twist: "Ironically, the secular Arab nationalist regimes like the Syrian Baath have typically been favorable to local Christians, since they downplay religious identity."

One of the those thing you get out of reading about the Iraqi Christian minority is that you get reminded that words like Chaldean, Assyrian, and Nestorian are terms applied to actual living people in the 21st century, not just long-dead sects.

Merry Christmas to all who want to hear it.

There is no irony involved when some group of people exist at the whim of a despotic dictator or fascist government. If I was an Iraqi Christian, I'd take my chances with a democracy any day.

Merry Christmas, Tubino!

I'm worried about those problems in Iraq, too. I'm also worried about poverty, hostility to homosexuals, anti-semitism, sexism, and a host of other social problems that are endemic to the middle east.

But I generally agree with the phrase "sunlight is the best disinfectant". Iraq has a free press now, so the future is in their hands rather than the depending on whims of a dictator (or his murderous sons). Christians will almost certainly live better in a democratic Iraq than they were going to under Baathism.

It may be true that in some specific ways, Saddam was more enlightened than Iraqis in general due to his much-lauded "secularism". But that minimal tolerance of Christianity came hand-in-hand with mass graves and perpetual war and terror. It isn't a worthwhile trade, not even for the Christians.

Why are Egyptians controlling who enters the US in the first place?

Posted by: Iblis on December 26, 2005 05:49 PM

I imagine because they know the language and can easier deal with the Egyptian public they serve, and to help reduce the cost/exposure of a big American staff at the embassy. Cheaper and less dangerous to farm out what is supposed to be grunt-work to the locals.

But then, they should be supervised, and no one with Hamas posters should be hired.

F'n' DUHHH!!

Posted by: ace on December 26, 2005 05:51 PM

Because hiring local labor to push papers is cheaper than flying in another overpaid State Department bureaucrat.

Posted by: SJKevin on December 26, 2005 05:51 PM

A democratic Iraq is likely to be (already is?) a theocratic Iraq with strong ties to Iraq.

But that minimal tolerance of Christianity came hand-in-hand with mass graves and perpetual war and terror.

So far, the US invasion has come hand-in-hand with kidnappings, thousands of homicides, bombings, torture, secret abductions, executions, and jailings.

For the Christians in particular, I'm not sure that life in Iraq is better.

The disinfectant mentioned above is largely nonexistent. Corruption is widespread, criminals mostly go unpunished.

But things do change. Look at Lebanon now, after so much civil war. Ultimately I think the situation in Iraq will improve, even if it takes a forceable, violent breakup to get there.

I just got George Packer's book on Iraq, The Assassins' Gate, for Christmas. Haven't cracked it open yet, but hope to start on it soon.

Why am I not suprised you approve of dictator- imposed puppet governments.

Posted by: BrewFan on December 26, 2005 07:22 PM

Er, Tubino, I think you meant to comment in this thread.

Once upon a time, I wanted to work for the State Department. Soon before the Iraq War, I realized I didn't. I'd be too frustrated with their softness. The State Department exists to serve America above all else. Supposedly. Perhaps they got a memo I haven't read yet.

We should take a page out of the British book: instead of regular Egyptians, the Embassy should be hiring Copts.

Just like America.
Excellent!

Hmmm.

If I went looking for your past 'predictions' about Iraq I wonder if I would find anything so optimistic (your desire for a civil war notwithstanding).

Something about successful democratic elections brings out the best hopes in everyone, it seems.

Even those who were unrelentingly negative not so long ago.

Sorry; did I say 'unrelentingly negative?'

I meant WRONG ABOUT EVERYTHING.

Has the good news from Iraq finally trickled through the leftist filters?

It is a good day.

Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. -- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.

@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
