Kos: "Vindicated" Over "Screw 'em" CommentIn June 2003, after television cameras caught a cheering, thousand-strong mob in Fallujah dragging the charred, dismembered bodies of American contractors through the streets, Moulitsas linked to the reports and said of the contractors: “I feel nothing… Screw them.” The declaration, gleefully seized on by right-wing bloggers, provoked weeks of controversy. Democratic candidates came under pressure to pull their advertisements from the site, and even Moulitsas’s traditional allies in the liberal blogosphere—including The Washington Monthly’s Kevin Drum—criticized him. (When I asked Moulitsas recently how he felt about the episode, his mouth stretched into a smile: “Vindicated,” he said. How does anything that happened, or could happen, "vindicate" his "I feel nothing... screw 'em" statement? That's not saying "Iraq is unwinnable," a statement which could be vindicated by the right facts. It's just a statement of pure uncaring maliciousness. But don't question his patriotism. He also talks about his pride in being a total asshole. Remember, this guy is a blogger. Not even so much a blogger as the host of a large chat-forum. Yes, he's got traffic. But still, in the end, a blogger. I still think blogging is pretty embarassing. This guy thinks it makes him cool enough to get away with being a dickhead. Ah, well. Maybe three million hits a day does that to you. Related: The Politics of Personal Vindication, about people rooting for American tragedy just so they can tell their friends they were right in a political argument. Chris Matthews expressed his own preference for personal vindication over American triumph in talking with Thomas Friedman: Well, let me talk to you about, as a person who spends every night here arguing about it one way or the other, trying to understand it one way or the other. That's the problem-- an American victory would force Chris Matthews to say "I was wrong." And he just can't have that. posted by Ace at 09:25 PM

Actually a purple finger held up after voting is Iraq telling Kos to go fuck himself. Posted by: ken on December 22, 2005 09:46 PM
Moulitsas wasn’t just posting any polls, he was selecting those that suggested Democrats—from John Kerry to congressional candidates—were heading for victory, while downplaying less encouraging signs. It left liberals trapped in a bubble of reassurance. Heading into the election, it would have been reasonable to assume from the evidence presented on Daily Kos that Kerry was the clear favorite to beat Bush, and that Democrats were likely to pick up seats in both houses of Congress. When none of these things happened, there was a sense of incomprehension. Muhuawhawhawhaw! Posted by: The Warden on December 22, 2005 09:46 PM
Hey, I've got an idea: why don't we rightwing rethuglican warmongering babykillers quit visiting the Kos website, talking about the Kos person, and in general giving him the attention the overgrown pathetic adolescent obviously craves? Let him live in his own hermetically sealed leftard bell jar with his minions and sycophants. That's what he does anyway, but the least we can do is quit adding to the kabillions of "hits" he is gloating about. If he no longer has legions of outraged "right wingers" (aka, "normal people") building up his site stats we might someday go to whatever his url is and get a "404 not found" message. Come on now -- I may be a crazy woman with a crazy dream, but it just might work. Nah. Never mind. You people just can't stay away from him or Atrios or whoever the other people are. It's like a drug -- a really nasty and pointless drug like absinthe, that makes you hallucinate, gives you brain damage, and worst of all tastes like original flavor Nyquil. I wonder if assholes like Kos, Yglesias, AmericaBlog, Nancy Pelosi will ever have a moment of clarity and realize, "hey, I'm a complete asshole..." If that moment of clarity ever comes to pass I'm sure the realization that they have slipped too far down the slippery slope of degeneration to ever come back will also sink in so it is a moot point. Damn I'm drunk Posted by: Johnnywaka on December 22, 2005 09:54 PM
I think the moment, and the realization, probably happened long ago. Posted by: someone on December 22, 2005 10:02 PM

I have often wondered why people on the right bother to visit those lefty sites. Is it because of a desire to see (read) how the other side lives? Or is it a need to find material? You know, for jokes and such... 'Cause I can't think of any other reason. Durand Posted by: durand on December 22, 2005 11:30 PM

When he said "vindicated," was he talking about the state of affairs in Iraq or something like the trophy video, where contractors filmed themselves shooting at civilians? I don't agree that his remarks are defensible, given that we don't know that the contractors that were killed participated in anything like that, but it is a very different thing. Sounds like you're assuming that he was talking about the state of affairs in Iraq. Do you have anything to back up that assumption? Regards, Posted by: Jason on December 23, 2005 12:20 AM
Let's not forget that every single candidate that that lisping little pillow-biter has supported -- from his 10 or 11 handpicked congressional candidates in 2004 to Kerry and that chap in Ohio this year -- has lost. Posted by: Jim in Chicago on December 23, 2005 12:21 AM
Not that there's anything wrong with being a lisping little pillow-biter, or a gay cowboy or shepherd or summin. Posted by: Jim in Chicago on December 23, 2005 12:22 AM
bodhi, The contractors weren't shooting at civilians, they were shooting at Madhi army personel. Military snipers would have done the same except that they were not deployed to the site. There is no vindication for what he said. And there never will be. Posted by: runninrebel on December 23, 2005 12:50 AM
Hey, I've got an idea: why don't we rightwing rethuglican warmongering babykillers quit visiting the Kos website, talking about the Kos person, and in general giving him the attention the overgrown pathetic adolescent obviously craves? I disagree completely. Not about the absinthe part, me likes. Kos is becomming not just a phenomena on the left but unbelievably enough a person the Democrats go to for advice and counsel. He has briefed the Democrats in Congress, talks to Democratic leaders regularly...in short he is becomming a Democratic power broker and direction setter. Nothing would make me happier than to have this ass clown become the face of the Democratic party. He rips of the veneer of the touchy feely caring lefty and is driving them further and further left. Keep up the good work numb nuts. Posted by: JackStraw on December 23, 2005 08:46 AM
Talk about a disconnect with reality - the guy probably thinks the birds sing him songs of praise as their patron deity as part of their spring fertility ritual, and says "Ha! Take that Bush!" after every BM. Ko0 KOo, kOo koO 8~\ Posted by: Scott on December 23, 2005 08:53 AM
Two quick points - Kos clarified his 'screw 'em' comment about a week after he made it. The rationale had to do with his emotional state and involved his upbringing in El Salvador. Also, Kos made a point that his selections for endorsements had nothing to do with the probability of that candidate winning the election, but rather he wanted to get the Democratic base revved up. Or something. Anyway - the Kos-meme that drives me up the wall is Kos's stint in the Army. Basically - he joined the Army to take advantage of the educational benefits and get out of Chicago (he said as much during an interview in '03 with a Boston University publication) -- which is all well and good. He then got out just as he was about to be shipped to Kuwait. Again, all well and good, his enlistment was up. Now, if he would just LAY THE FUCK OFF the "I, Patriot" crap. and, yes, I served in the miltary. Posted by: BumperStickerist on December 23, 2005 08:59 AM
Also, Kos made a point that his selections for endorsements had nothing to do with the probability of that candidate winning the election, but rather he wanted to get the Democratic base revved up. This would be all well and good if he didn't say all the time the only thing he really cares about is WINNING! I don't buy the "I choose my candidates based on policy" crap. He wants to win and win big. Posted by: JackStraw on December 23, 2005 09:43 AM
Kos clarified his 'screw 'em' comment about a week after he made it. The rationale had to do with his emotional state and involved his upbringing in El Salvador. Everyone has an excuse, whether it's him laughing at Pat Tillman's death, or the murderers and rapists who blame it on childhood abuse in court. Kos is a joke. The truly funny thing is that the Dems keep choosing Kingmakers who are especially bad at making Kings. Kos will be another in a line of "0-fer" political consultants who get their faces on television (a la Bob Beckel) or who keep getting hired based only on their own marketing and promotion (Bob Shrum). Posted by: Jimmie on December 23, 2005 09:57 AM
The problem here is that the more deranged idiots like Kos are listened to by the Democrat big shots, the more elections they will lose and the more their party will decline. And this is not a good thing. Without a viable opposition, the GOP will grow fat, lazy, corrupt, and complacent. We need at least two healthy political parties in competition, each one to keep the other lean, mean, and fighting for each vote they get. If you think that GOP-sponsored pork is bad now, imagine how bad it would be if the Demcrat opposition collapsed. Posted by: OregonMuse on December 23, 2005 12:10 PM
Ace, Thank you for yet another great post. I don't comment on your site because, well, I'm just not very interesting. I am only an appreciative reader. It occurs to me that I can contribute in my own small way and so I have by hitting your PayPal link. I hope that others who enjoy your writing will do the same. Compared to the wisecrackers who make this site so much fun this comment sounds all goofy and maudlin, and it is, so I beg your forgiveness. But I think it's important to give encouragement and support - and money - to those like you who have so clearly earned it. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyeux Festivus, etc., Ace. May the New Year bring happiness and prosperity to you, your family, and the hilarious crew of fans you've assembled on your site. I think it's a good thing to be aware of what the opposition is saying. People read them, people are influenced by them. We should be aware of what stories, claimes, memes, and propaganda are being proliferated by these sites and people. Commenting on them is also good: it gives us ammunition to beat their arguments (not all of us are as aware of what's going on to create our own arguments against their claims), and it makes the rest of us aware of just what they're saying and doing. Sort like what Bush's doing. ;-) And, yes, every now and then their true face unwittingly is revealed. Those are moments to notice. Posted by: Muslihoon on December 23, 2005 10:09 PM

Few people remember that Norm MacDonald began his career as a ventriloquist
MacDonald's old partner Adam Egot revealed that MacDonald repurposed a bit with one of his ventriloquist dolls -- that he was a "bad guy" who "didn't believe the Holocaust happened" -- for the Norm MacDonald show, in which he claimed Egot didn't believe in the Holocaust. Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. Robinson voice "where's your cuck now?" I posted his post on twitter and it's gotten 25K views so far. Thanks, Smell the Glove Chris

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source" Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held. Basil the Great
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.
Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing. Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult. Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending. (((Dan Hodges))) Nick Lowles
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98. Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years. Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45 Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%. I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens. REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs. Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:
