Update: Environmentalists Sue To Reduce Greenhouse Gases To Save Drowning Polar Bears

Remember the days when legislation used to be the job of legislators? How naive we were.

Three environmental groups sued the federal government Thursday, seeking to protect polar bears from extinction because of disappearing Arctic sea ice.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Francisco, demands that the government take action on a petition environmentalists filed earlier to have polar bears listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.

Once a species is listed as threatened, the government is barred from doing anything to jeopardize the animal's existence or its habitat.

In the case of the polar bear, the environmentalists hope to force the government to curb U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide.

Thanks to Steven den Beste.

Whoopsie!

Make sure to read "State of Fear". Interesting book...

They have to understand that its them or us. Given half a chance, the great white ice bear would kill you and everybody you've ever cared about.

In the case of the polar bear, the environmentalists hope to force the government to curb U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide.

Now let me get this straight: These environmentalists, as far as I can tell, are not accusing the Feds of doing anything to jeopardize the polar bear's existence or its habitat. Rather, they are accusing the Feds of not doing anything to protect the polar bear's existence or habitat, and implicitly arguing that, at least for the purpose of the Endangered Species Act, not actively protecting a species is indistinguishable from actively jeopardizing that species. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see how this argument would have any legs in court.

You know who would be perfect as lead counsel for this case?

UNFROZEN CAVEMAN LAWYER!

Wouldn't it be cheaper to build a Polar Bear Migration Ferry, complete with a fresh seal buffet? Maybe some waterwings?

Instead of filing another of their stupid lawsuits the enviromentalists wackos should put duct tape over their mouths and cut down on all that HOT AIR

It seems like only ten years ago that the United States funded a whale rescue that involved cutting holes in Arctic ice at 300 yard intervals so that some lost whales could breathe as they poked around looking for god knows what ...

... because, you know, whales never got lost before.

I don't either, and I doubt there is any evidence at all that the bears are presently "endangered". I suspect the whole purpose of the suit is to get some attention in the press.

The dismissal of the case months later will not, of course, get any coverage.

Okay, everybody quit exhaling so we hold down the green house gas (carbon dioxide). Environmentalists!! What a bunch of maroons!!

Steven den Beste is throwing you links?

Ace, you have ARRIVED...

I just started "State Of Fear", I've been reading really slowly lately. Assuming that polutants are causing global warming, CO2 barely even has greenhouse properties compared to stuff like methane. The only reason for always harping on CO2 is that it's the one gas that the US makes more of than other countries.

Holdfast: Speaking of cheaper, it'd probably be cheaper to just increase the planet's albedo somehow, like cover the Sahara desert in mylar or something.

You're forgetting that the court is in California!

Wouldn't it be easier and a lot less expensive simply to feed the bears a steady diet of environmentalists?

Posted by: BattleofthePyramids on December 20, 2005 01:36 AM

hey battle i have the same idea lets feed the eco-wackos to the poar bears

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
