I suspect that, despite the PC of the Sydney government, Aussies won't respond to this type of thing the same way the French and otehr Europeans have. And yes, they will try something like that here. And unless "persons of Mediterrian appearance" restrict themselves to LA or San Diego or the more elite parts of NYC they may find that they've bitten off a bit more than they can chew.

I was under the impression that multiculturalism wasn't quite as big a priority in Australia as in Europe. They've elected John Howard 4 times straight, and he's pretty much a Giuliani-type figure: liberal for Texas, but definitely right of center (even for U.S. politics)... and not one to put up with feel-good multiculti crap just for the sake of easing his conscience.

Any place where they've got laws against private ownership of swords is Europe in my book.
