King Kong Is (Yawn) Racist

The film plays on age-old colonialist stereotypes about black men, such as "those people are all fifty feet tall," "you can't leave those people alone ten minutes with dinosaurs without a fight breaking out," and "those people reduce your property values by climbing all the skyscrapers in your area and knocking down biplanes."

Or something.

Link Glitch: I had intended to link Digital Brownshirt, who sent me the story (and excerpts it), but I accidentally just posted the link to the actual Kong-is-racist review. I've changed that, thanks to Dave's tip.

Dave, the web's go-to guy for ape extravaganzas, reviews the movie, giving it a rave (but consider the audience, here) and finds the charges of racism pretty silly.

Ace-- I touched on this issue a bit in my review.

Digital Brownshirt's got comments too.

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

I guess that JESSIE JACKASSON will be protesting again

Posted by: spurwing plover on December 15, 2005 09:53 AM

Jonah Goldberg talked about this during the "Lord of the RIngs is racist" hoopla:

www.nationalreview.com/goldberg/goldberg010303.asp

He makes a good point: Who's the real racist? Someone who sees an ape and thinks "black people" or someone who sees an ape and thinks "ape"?

Mucho gracias for the link, Ace, much obliged.

Bottom line: Kong starts out slow (real slow) but picks up and ends incredibly well. I was very surprised it was as good as it was.

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

P.S. BTW, my Weblog Awards race is still really close-- it's been back and forth between me and my nearest competitor. Since this is the last day of voting and all, wouldn't mind some extra clicks here.

"I was lucky that my paternal instinct to stay and explain this to my son at the end got the better of me, because the next two hours were fabulous.

Though it was always impossible for the film not to endorse the black male stereotype, and one has to ask why Jackson so wanted to make King Kong as opposed to anything else, his attempt to shelve the lust angle and portray the relationship between Kong and Darrow (played by Naomi Watts) as owner and favourite pet - in that order - worked. The cinematography was excellent and my worst fears were not realised."

Notice how this enlightened fellow started enjoying the movie right about the time it started to portray the relationship between the supposed black man stylization and white chickie as "owner and pet - in that order"?

Instead of musing about Peter Jackson's motivations in making it perhaps Kwame should ask himself whether there is any way they (meaning someone other than Spike Lee Productions) could have made a King Kong movie that held no racial under, over or middle- tones for him.

So, in case everyone has forgotten, this is what we have been ordered by the elites to do:

Do NOT go see King Kong, er, rather King KKKong. If you do, you are nothing but a racist pig.

You MUST go see Brokeback Mountain. In fact, you have to see it at least 3 times. If you do not, you hate gay people.

Posted by: Mark on December 15, 2005 10:17 AM

You really have to work very hard to be stupid enough to get offended by Kong in racist terms. I think medication for paranoia might be called for.

Although the Orcs in LOTR were clearly symbols for the honkey vision of the black man and so that movie is racist, and Jackson probably is too.

Posted by: Defense Guy on December 15, 2005 10:51 AM

One more thing, if Jackson had merely made Kong gay then we wouldn't be hearing this shit.

A gay kong would trump black outrage.

The comments at the Times article are priceless. This one really caught my eye:

white folks are already fully aware, albeit subconciously, of how this kind of racial mind f**king works, and enjoy the fruits of it.

Those racist "white folks"!

Yeah, but does he find it anti-homosexual?

I also see that some people are up in arms because Jackson cast Melanesian actors in the role of the "savages". Now, correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the island in the Pacific Ocean? What did they want playing them, Scandinavians? I guess a character can't be "bad" unless he (or she) is white.

I think my favorite complaint is that the population in NYC isn't presented in the "correct" proportion of 15% black. What the hell, was he sitting in the theater furiously taking a census of the crowd shots?

His poor kid will probably never be able to just enjoy a movie without having its hidden political/social agenda explained to him at length by his killjoy dad. Sometimes a giant monkey's just a giant monkey, dude.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
