Carlos Delgado Will Stand For God Bless America, Now That He's Gotten A Big Check From the Mets

He used to sit the song out as a political protest.

But that was before he negotiated for higher money in free agency. After the issue was discussed with him, he's decided that his political protest isn't quite as important as following "team rules."

Some may call it yet more hypocrisy from the left. I, however, see it as a case of Cash-Money Censorship by Capitalist Stooges.

Poor Carlos Delgado. When The Man comes waving a fat check in your face, it's just another form of political oppression.

Thanks to The Wardrobe Door.

So, he was protesting that he wasn't being paid enough? Do I have that right?

God Bless America, indeed.

This really puts the old punchline, "We've determined what you are, we're just trying to negotiate a price" into perspective.

Pfagh!

Like I said: this is a part of why even though I love baseball, I have grown to hate the pro game. Moneyball, indeed! Like any other big-time pro sport, MLB is more about the spectacle than the game (all that steroid abuse was in part just to give the fans lots of homerun derbys).

But, like Christy Mathewson, I am a believer in "small ball" and look with a gimlet eye on modern "refinements" to the pro game. No astroturf! No DH! Players must be able to speak and understand English! And while I'm dreaming: no Free Agency, and a three-year limit on player contracts! (Gives the players what they want -- the ability to move -- but gives the teams what they want -- the ability to shrink the payroll if need be.)

Thank god for the regional leagues....

Delgado's not only an anti-American fool, he's on the wrong end of 30. And we gave up our best pitching prospect for this guy? Ugh.

Posted by: someone on November 28, 2005 02:55 PM

God hates me. He uses the Mets to cause me more mental anguish than Job ever had to deal with. Even when we get the lefty power hitter we desperately need he turns out to be a REAL lefty power hitter.

If we trade away our best 5 tool prospect since Strawberry for "thats just Manny being Manny" I will open a vein. I shit you not.

Gutless coward. Runs his shit-talk mouth while in Toronto and with the retirees in Florida. Comes to NY, where the bleeding happened, and loses his resolve.

What a little pussy.

Bad enough to have such idiotic, repugnant, ignorant opinions of America. Even worse to shit your pants and run, but only when it looks like your little pose might actually cause you some harm or contract dollars.

Not the "tools" BS... Remember Rey "tools" Ordonez? Ugggggh.

"Tools" is code for "couldn't take a freakin' walk if his life depended on it".

Posted by: someone on November 28, 2005 03:07 PM

But, Milledge is probably a player. We don't need another hitter, either... We need a #1 pitcher who can eat innings -- like every other team in the league, of course.

Posted by: someone on November 28, 2005 03:16 PM

Please don't bring up Rey Rey. The wounds are still deep. But Millege may be the real deal. Ramirez is NOT worth the baggage or the risk.

Bobby Bonilla with corn rows.

Seriously, though, if Minaya is going for the WS...

Who's going to win our playoff games, besides Pedro? (And with that laughably thin bullpen... Ugggh. Wagner is OK, but we really need 2-3 more good no-name guys to fill the middle.)

Posted by: someone on November 28, 2005 03:24 PM

Being given a fat check is political oppression.

Will someone please oppress me! Please? Look, I'm even making the big puppy eyes!

Posted by: Mikey on November 28, 2005 03:28 PM

Carlos Fucking Delgado belonged in Toronto.

I feel sorry for the fans who end up with Manny "the man-child" Ramirez. Wait until he and Pedro start up with the antics.

Posted by: Bart on November 28, 2005 03:41 PM

Delgado originally protested the anthem/God Bless America for the US military's continued use of Vieques for training purposes. After the Gulf War II started, he added that to his list of grievances (via WFAN in NYC).

You see, the US military needed a place where it could train for amphibious operations, warm weather climates, and a variety of missions. Vieques offered that capability. Some of the locals didn't like it, despite the fact that it helped pump the local economy.

Well, the military decided to cave into the locals and relocated its operations elsewhere. The local economy sucks, but no more training runs for our military there.

This just in...Mets get Wagner, 4 years $43 million with a 5th year option.

More, please.

Posted by: JackStraw on November 28, 2005 05:04 PM

We totally overpaid. We need Burnett.

Posted by: someone on November 28, 2005 05:50 PM

Willie Randolph is SO screwed having that piece of work camped out in his clubhouse.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
