Personally, if this clown spouted that crap to my face, he would be in imminent danger of getting his chicklets knocked out. I'm sick of these people. No one ever call them on their shit. Posted by: fugazi on November 17, 2005 10:43 PM
This guy is an English teacher? Did you see all the grammatical errors and typos? Well, yeah, I know, he's a community college "professor". But still. Moonbat and a moron to boot. Or am I being redundant? Posted by: Mark on November 17, 2005 10:49 PM
Mark: The English department at any University is usually a festering sinkhole of Marxism, feminism, and general Leftism. Take it from one who knows: I got my B.A. in English Lit., class of 1990. The only department with a thicker Leftist tilt than the English department is Sociology. It's no accident that not much literature of any lasting import has emerged from academia in the last three or four decades. The literary poseurs disappeared up their own assholes long ago, lost in a thicket of semiotics, feminist theory, and the "new criticism". Shit on those people, I says. If Juggs magazine is good enough for me, it oughta be good enough for those stuck-up bastards. Posted by: Monty on November 17, 2005 10:59 PM

The English department at any University is usually a festering sinkhole of Marxism, feminism, and general Leftism. My undergrad and grad school experience was that English departments are where the philosophy departments sweep their rubbish once it's been discredited. If Juggs magazine is good enough for me, it oughta be good enough for those stuck-up bastards. A depressing number of them pride themselves on not reading anything at all. It's all about how to read, not actual reading. And the deconstructionist/postmodernists would probably have no problem with the idea that Juggs and Shakespeare are fungible. The Marxist feminists would probably have split on the issue. I dropped a PhD program and changed careers out of disgust with these destructive loons. Typical institutional moonbats; basically, they're just garden variety social parasites. Posted by: VRWC Agent on November 17, 2005 11:13 PM

Monty: The only department with a thicker Leftist tilt than the English department is Sociology. And don't I know it. Me: BS Social "Science", class of 1992, Generic State University. I remember in particular one paper we were assigned where we had to analyze the data on why smoking should be outlawed, since second hand smoke obviously kills. The conclusion was foregone; we had to arrive at the result that secondhand smoke was deadly. Nevertheless my paper proposed a meta-analysis of existing second-hand smoke studies which would likely show that the data just didn't support that conclusion. Needless to say I received, I recall, a C. Mind you, this was a statistics class, and my science was impeccable if I do say so myself. But the conclusion didn't jibe with their notions.

The College has issued a press release: Press Release Warren County Community College is a "students first" college where learning without limits is always the main goal. We maintain a mission of building a community of learners through accessible, quality learning opportunities designed to meet personal aspirations for all students. It has been brought to the administration's attention that a part-time instructor, Mr. John Daly, speaking for himself and using his personal email, sent a message to a student representing the Young Americans for Freedom in response to a personal email from her requesting him to announce an upcoming event on the campus. Mr Daly responded to her alone, and expressed his own personal views regarding his beliefs about this group. The viewpoints of this professor in no way depict the views of Warren County Community College, its administration, or the Board of Trustees. The College does however support the constitution, the first amendment, and the right to free speech. Additionally, Mr. Daly's message was sent as a one-to-one message, via e-mail, to one person, and not to the college community. Finally, the College is viewing this message as a personnel issue and will be addressing it according to the policies and procedures of the College. Dr. Austin, college president stated, "I firmly believe every employee and student has first amendment rights, no matter how repugnant I personally find Mr. Daly's statements. Our attorneys have advised us of our obligation to follow state laws, board policies, and college due process in regards to any personnel matter. We are now investigating this matter further." Here is the repsonse I sent part-time, junior college professor Daly. I have removed my name, address, contact information & the name of the company I used to work for... mainly for personal reasons & to avoid an on-slaught of moon bat based e-mails. Professor Daly, I encountered a complete & unedited version of the e-mail you sent to Rebecca Beach regarding her announcement of the appearance of Lt. Col. Scott Rutter. I cannot fathom how any adult, especially in the education field would in any way respond to a student in such an unprofessional & childish manner. She was merely trying to inform the faculty of the Lt. Col’s appearance. There was no political motivation. She was not choosing a side in the conflict of economic ideologies - that was pretty much ended once the Berlin fell back in 1987 - & as far as I can tell she has done nothing to justify the response that she did from you. I will ignore your insistence that Communism hasn’t killed over 100 Million; in fact the number is closer to 120 Million & growing daily. I am not familiar w/ the fact of any Capitalistic societies that have had to use a military presence to keep its people within its borders. Yet, China, Former Soviet Union, Cuba, North Korea each have had to & still continue to do so. I don’t ever recall hearing of, nor reading of, anyone every having to risk their lives to gain access to any Communist society – yet thousand perish each year fleeing Cuba & China trying to get anywhere else. Don’t bother to bring up Cuba or China as some kind of example – Cuba is one of the most poverty stricken, third world nations I have ever visited & the only way China has stayed financially afloat is the “economic free-zones” & near slave labor... which I have also visited & witnessed. In fact, during my last visit to China in late 1994, I was forced to witness - along w/ 3,000 fellow workers of ********* Electronics, who were pulled off of the floor during their shift - 7 people being executed in the streets outside one of our company’s manufacturing plants. As a representative of my company, I had no choice but to watch these murders under Chinese law. If you’d like, I would be more than happy to debate you in any forum of your liking. I must warn you sir, I am not a junior college freshman & have not only been to each of the nations I have listed above, in some cases more than once. I have also had the honor of serving this country as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps (both as active duty & in the reserves) & have been to Iraq 3 times – once during the first Gulf War & I just recently finished my 2nd tour in Iraq last September. I am more than happy to debate you about any portion of Iraqi War, the facts that lead up to & the build up of troops to either the Gulf War or the current wars in Iraq or Afghanistan. I have traveled extensively throughout the Middle East as well acquainted w/ & am quite versed in its culture & history. As far as your cheap shot regarding the Federal Government‘s response to Katrina, you must have forgotten that the Coastguard had a cutter & several helicopters rescuing & aiding people within 2 hours of the hurricane’s departure from the city of New Orleans. Whatever failures there were w/ FEMA, & there were several, none were as grave or affected those left behind more than the failures of the city & state governments – both of which were under Democratic control. I am making the assumption that you prefer the Democratic Party over the Republican Party. I know you won’t respond to this, nor will you accept my challenges to a debate – regardless of the forum. In fact, judging you from your response to Rebecca’s announcement, you don’t strike me as the type of person that argues w/ anyone who might actually be able to debate you. You feel much more comfortable belittling an 18/19 year old female freshman. What a man you are & how proud of yourself you must be… I don’t feel sorry for you, for you have chosen to believe what you do & I personally have placed my life on the line to ensure that you will continue to be able to do so. I feel sorry for those students that are forced to take your class & be subjected to your rattled reasoning & un-informed political viewpoints. It does beg the question, if you are so repulsed by a capitalistic society… why do you choose to continue to live, work & support one? Since I have actually traveled to & experienced the majority of communist countries, I already know the answer. I wonder do you? Enjoy your freedom, some great men & women have given a lot so you can do so, Semper Fidelis Capt. ****** *******, USMC (ret), PHD, MCSE Posted by: CaptP on November 18, 2005 01:27 AM
Here's mine: You're an English professor? Perhaps you were off at some convocation of anti-American slimeballs the day they talked about subject-verb agreement. It doesn't surprise me in the least that someone of your meager intellect is apparently illiterate. I gotta tell you, even here in Moonbat Central (Berkeley) very few people would go as far as this guy. Even among the world of moonbats, this guy is an outlier. Lots of people want "peace now" - very few of them really want communist revolution at home and abroad anymore. They're useful idiots, sure, but they're not as bad as this. (Or maybe they're just really good at hiding it?) Those very few tend to be noisy, but trust me - the majority of professors and grad students and such are anti-war in a "Kumbayah" way, not an "up against the wall, motherfucker!!!!" way. I guess I'm just the type to look for silver linings ... Posted by: Knemon on November 18, 2005 03:48 AM

I guess I was lucky, going to a state school in Texas I found only about 60% liberals, although they did seem to be clustered heavily in the English department, but of course we didn't have any such thing as "Peace Studies" or similar rot. Fortunately one of our best English professors was retired Navy, Annapolis grad, who told such rousing salty tales that by the end of a semester half the class was ready to enlist. He was voted student's favorite every year. We had a history professor who wrote biographies of John Wayne, and I had a young government teacher who made Alex P. Keaton sound like a raging commie and ironically was the spitting image of Woody Harrelson. Posted by: Tom on November 18, 2005 09:09 AM

"Since Professor John Daly has created a hostile learning environment for Rebecca, she is demanding that Warren Community College President William Austin institute seminars on free speech and sensitivity to teach intolerant leftists, such as Daly, to be respectful of differing opinion(s)." You have to love Rebecca Beach for turning the campus left's PC policies against this unprofessional, unethical bastard. I would pay admission to watch Daly squirm through a mindlessly boring lecture on tolerance and sensitivity. Posted by: Border Reiver on November 18, 2005 09:18 AM

Reading about idiot professors who actively hate their country has become a sport over the past few years. What I find entertaining is their religious beliefs in an economic system that is flawed from its basic premises to its death-camp real world variants. So, I saw that you are the latest in a long line of mental halfbreeds who use socialism and anti-Americanism as an intellectual mirkin. I suppose your line about capitalism killing a lot of people is a sort of neo-Baran justification for the failures of communism. Sure, maybe Marx's writings can be changed to imply that any person in the world who is poor is a victim of capitalism, but that's never going to lead a NASCAR dad to think that he is immizerated. Anyway, its pointless to argue with a religious fanatic, especially one who does not realize that his own paranoid belief system comprises such an escape from reality. I think that the only fair thing for you to do is to find a country that has followed your economic fantasies and starve there. Secondly, you could pick up a rifle and put your ass where your mouth is. While the number of communists and Islamofascists that Americans have killed pale in comparison to the numbers of communists and Islamists killed by their ideas, we can accomodate your need for action. Otherwise, your continued residence in this country simply exposes you for the gutless, brainless leech you are. BTW, congratulations on all of your grammatical errors. What course do you teach? In more marketing for Project Hail Mary, scientists say they've found the biosigns indicating life growing on an alien planet. It's not proof, just signatures of chemicals that are produced by biological metabolism, and it could be nothing, but scientists think it's a strong sign that this planet is inhabited by something.
In a paper published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, a team of scientists announced the detection of dimethyl sulfide (along with a similar detection of dimethyl disulfide) in the atmosphere of an exoplanet called K2-18b. This is actually the second detection of dimethyl sulfide made on this planet, following a tentative detection in 2023. He means they tried to prove the signal was caused by things other than dimethyl sulfide but they could not.

Great marketing arranged by Amazon to promote Project Hail Mary. Okay not really but it does work out that way.
What? Skeleton of the most famous Musketeer, D'Artagnan, possibly discovered in Dutch church closet.
Dumas picked four names of real musketeers out of a history book, D'Artagnan, Athos, Aramis, and Porthos. So there was an actual D'Artagnan, though he made most of the story up. (Or, you know, all of it.)* Charles de Batz de Castelmore, known as d'Artagnan, the famous musketeer of Kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV, spent his life in the service of the French crown. A lot of Dumas's stories are based on bits of real history. The plot of the >Three Musketeers, about trying to recover lost diamonds from the queen's necklace, was cribbed from the then-almost-contemporaneous Affair of the Queen's Necklace. And the Man in the Iron Mask is based on real accounts of a prisoner forced to wear a mask (though I think it was a velvet mask). * Oh, I should mention, Dumas says all this, about finding the names in an old book, in the prologue to his novel. But authors lie a lot. They frequently present fictions as based on historic fact. The twist is, he was actually telling the truth here. At least about these four musketeers having actually existed and served under Louis XIV. Fun fact: You know the beginning of A Fistful of Dollars where the local gunslingers make fun of Clint Eastwood's donkey and Eastwood demands they apologize to the donkey? That's lifted from The Three Musketeers. Rochefort mocks D'Artagnan's old, brokedown farm horse and D'Artagnan is incensed.
A commenter asked which should be read first, The Hobbit of LOTR?
Easy, no question -- read The Hobbit first. It's actually the start of the story and comes first chronologically. It sets up some major characters and major pieces in play in LOTR. Also, the Hobbit is Beginner-Friendly, which LOTR isn't. The Hobbit really is a delightful book, and a fast read. It's chatty, it's casual, it's exciting, and it's funny. In that dry cheeky British humor way. I love that the narrator is constantly making little asides and commentary, like he's just sitting next to you telling you this story as it occurs to him. LOTR is a very long story. Fifteen hundred pages or so. The Hobbit is relatively short and very punchy and easy to read. If you don't like The Hobbit, you can skip out on LOTR. If you do like it, you'll be primed to read LOTR. Oh, I should say: The Hobbit is written as if it's for children, but one of those smart children's stories that are also for adults. Don't worry, there's also real fighting and violence and horror in it, too. LOTR is written for adults. (It's said that Tolkien wrote both for his children, but LOTR was written 17 years later, when his children were adults.) Some might not like The Hobbit due to its sometimes frivolous tone. Me, I love it. I find it constantly amusing. Both are really good but there is a starkly different tone to both. LOTR is epic, grand, and serious, about a world war, The Hobbit is light and breezy, and about a heist. Though a heist that culminates in a war for the spoils.
The Hobbit Challenge: Read two more chapters. I didn't have much time. Bilbo got the ring.
I noticed a continuity problem. Maybe. Now, as of the time of The Hobbit, it was unknown that this magic ring was in fact a Ring of Power, and it was doubly unknown that it was the Ring of Power, the Master Ring that controlled the others. But the narrator -- who we will learn in LOTR was none of than Bilbo himself, who wrote the book as "There and Back Again" -- says this about Gollum's ring: "But who knows how Gollum had come by that present [the Ring], ages ago in the old days when such rings were still at large in the world? Perhaps even the Master who ruled them could not have said." In another passage, the ring is identified as a "ring of power." I don't know, I always thought there was a distinction between mere magic rings and the Rings of Power created by Sauron. But this suggests that Bilbo knew this was a ring of power created by Sauron. Now I don't remember when Bilbo wrote the Hobbit. In the movie, he shows Frodo the book in Rivendell, and I guess he wrote it after he left the Shire. I guess he might have added in the part about the ring being a ring of power created by "the Master" after Gandalf appraised him of his research into the ring. I never noticed this before. I know Tolkien re-wrote this chapter while he was writing LOTR to make the ring important from the start. And also to make Gollum more sinister and evil, and also to remove the part where Gollum actually offers Bilbo the ring as a "present" -- Bilbo had already found it on his own, but Gollum was wiling to give it away, which obviously is not something the rewritten Gollum would ever do. But I had no memory of the ring being suggested to be The Ring so early in the tale.

The only bad part of the trilogy are the Frodo/Sam chapters in The Two Towers. They're repetitive, slow, and mostly about the weather and terrain. But most everything else is good. Weirdly, the Frodo-Sam chapters in Return of the King are exciting and action-packed and among the best in the trilogy. (Though the chapters with everyone else in Return of the King get pretty slow again. Mostly people talking about marching towards war, and then marching towards war.)
