Missed This: "Main Street" Republicans Blocking ANWR Drilling Funded By... George Soros

Love your site, but let's not engage in that which disgusts us about the MSM.

Your headline should read, "...Republicans Blocking ANWR Drilling Funded In Part By... George Soros"

The link to the proof (http://www.opensecrets.org/527s/527events.asp?orgid=53) offered by Malkin doesn't even describe Soros as the heaviest donor.

I know it's not as hard-hitting of a headline, but at least it's honest.

Sesame Street Republicans.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on November 10, 2005 04:53 PM

Yeah, it's a common point of confusion, right? I mean, when I hear someone gets funding from some source, I always assume that's the only friggin' source funding them, don't I? This especially applies to politicians, so many of them only seeking funding from one source and all.

Dipshit.

Posted by: spongeworthy on November 10, 2005 04:54 PM

Soros was number 2 (that about fits) on the list of donors.

Also, looking at the list of Main Street Republicans you find some fairly big names who have presidential aspirations:
John McCain (which is no surprise), but I was slightly surprised to see Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney.

If Romney wants to make endroads with conservatives wary about voting for a New Englander, he could do that by distancing himself from this bunch of idiots and maybe even publicly removing his name from their membership. Then explain how he wants to help the average American with the prices at the pump and their heating bills by using our own natural resources, not relying on Middle Eastern oil.

None of them are in my state, but if you see one from your state I would recommend letting them know your dissatisfaction.

Raising CAFE standards does more to reduce demand than ANWAR will do to increase supply.

Why can't citizens in a democracy vote to protect some areas of OUR land? Conservatives can be conservationists. Drilling in ANWAR is NOT popular, folks.

And guess what? If people change their minds in 10 or 20 or 40 years, and want to drill there, the oil WILL STILL BE THERE. Imagine the endgame of oil, when it is getting really scarce. Are you gonna be glad the US spent its supply decades ago, or will it be kinda nice to have a bit in the ground still, for security purposes?

Why rush to squander our supply while there is no supply problem? Sure, it takes 7-10 years to get it to market... fine. What's the hurry?

Puzzler: what if the chaos in Iraq means that its oil supply remains unsquandered for the next decade or two? How will its holdings increase in ratio to the rest of the world's?

Posted by: tubino on November 10, 2005 05:15 PM

Well, mine ain't there, because he's a Democrat. But I'm astonished to see Ohio has rep named Steven LaTourette. You reckon he pops up and screams "fucking shit!" on the floor of the House every once in a while?

Damn, I'd move to Ohio and vote for him if I thought so.

Posted by: S. Weasel on November 10, 2005 05:17 PM

Great, looks like most of the entire IL Republican delegation is on Soros's Payroll.

Oh wait since, Soros is not the sole funder, I'm actually being disingenuous. He probably doesn't even support them, its just a check he flushed down the toilet.

Checkit! California has a Jerry Lewis! "Hey laaaaaaadyyyy! With the voting and the motions and the legislaaaaationnnnn!."

Yeah. I think I'm building a Fantasy Congress over here.

Raising CAFE standards does more to reduce demand than ANWAR will do to increase supply.

"A 1999 USA TODAY analysis of crash data and estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that, in the years since CAFE standards were mandated under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975, about 46,000 people have died in crashes that they would have survived if they had been traveling in bigger, heavier cars."*

Well, I wrote a stiff note to my reps and senators.

The note was polite. I asked them if something had been put in the water, since the GOP has been truly f'n up lately!

Posted by: Maranna on November 10, 2005 06:26 PM

Rudy isn't on the list, is he?
(fingers crossed)

Posted by: Knemon on November 10, 2005 07:54 PM

And guess what? If people change their minds in 10 or 20 or 40 years, and want to drill there, the oil WILL STILL BE THERE.

Yeah, and I'm sure you're not being the least fucking disengenuous when you say that.

Don't worry, foax, tubino wil be behind drilling 100%...someday when we really need it. Honest.

George Soros should be deported to San Fancisco

Anybody who thinks that the US is killing its wild land through drilling or development is out of his gourd or stuck in a past which no longer exists.

Wild land has actually been in an expansion phase since the 1920s, '30s.

Only about 2% of the continental US now is classified as 'built up.'

Our wild land is VAST.
Even the areas that have people on it in any moderate density is home to much wildlife.

The amount of wild land in this country has been and is increasing every year, thanks to modern agriculture and industry.

I see it around me; farmer's lots are given over to wild land all over the place in the Northeast.
Modern technology as benefactor of the natural environment. Imagine that.

Excuse me, I have to shoot those nocturnal flying squirrels that keep raiding my birdfeeders at night. They're a damned nuisance. I get both the red and the grey ones here in Connecticut.

If it weren't for all the owls around here, I'd never keep up with them.

I fault the thick tree cover in this state.

Those letters to Dennis Hastert that Malkin published are so well-written. And so polite. Here's mine. It didn't make the cut:

Dear Dennis:

You fat bastard. Can't you even hold the line on ANWAR? It's our own goddammed land. Mooses don't give a shit about oil rigs. You want us permanently hitched to the middle east? And those asshole, fey Republicans you let take over didn't stand to lose a single vote from their respective constituents. As if. As if someone was going to say to themselves, "Hmm, Congressman Smallberries voted for ANWAR a year ago. He'll pay for that now, by god." Get your shit together, fatboy.

Yours truly,
RD

Posted by: rd on November 11, 2005 12:43 PM

Ace, can we have a flame thread for Hastert and members of the "Republican Main Street Partnership"? You know, so we can write some practice letters? Maybe get some literary feedback?

Posted by: rd on November 11, 2005 12:48 PM

I've read that letter three times, rd, and I can't for the life of me figure out what was wrong with it.

It is insightful and factual, with a certain indefinable zestiness that conveys your genuine interest in the subject matter.

Submit it again, maybe Ms. Malkin didn't read it in the right frame of mind the first time.

Oh wait since, Soros is not the sole funder, I'm actually being disingenuous. He probably doesn't even support them, its just a check he flushed down the toilet.

Considering how well his funding of lefty websites and other propaganda outlets worked in chucking Dubya out of the White House, I'd say flushing checks down the crapper is his standard operational procedure.

In fact, yes, it's co-written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. And I guess I would have realized that if I just watched the video, in which Bryan Adams plays guitar and contributes backing vocals.
