NYT's Profits Drop 52%

Sweeeeeet.

Top Ten Proposals Being Considered To Boost NYT's Falling Profits

10. Gain income from the Times' attempts to right itself by filming PBS series about restructuring at the paper hosted by Bob Villa, titled This Old Media

9. Play to the leftist audience by allowing Paul Krugman one column per week which is completely (rather than mostly) unedited and un-fact-checked; run promotional campaign featuring pitchline "Thursdays are Crazy-Days!!!"

8. Make Bob Herbert's columns more relevant and interesting by forcing him to use a Mad-Libs book for his screeds; readers will take delight in reading about Cinderella's "three NEOCON sisters" who force her to "UNILATERALLY OVERTHROW SOVEREIGN GOVERNMENTS" and who can best be described as "FASCIST" and "STINKY"

7. Put popular NYTimes Forum commenters behind the TimesSelect pay-per-view wall; people will eagerly shell out $25 to read the unhinged ramblings of "ProgressiveAvenger" and "DataNinja77"

6. Emulate the NY tabloids by running frequent contests and give-aways; readers who win the TimesBingo! contest will either receive a collection of books-on-tape by Susan Sonntag or Win a Dream Date With Frank Rich

5. New promotional campaign: Every Bit As Exciting As PBS, Except Without Dinosaur Shows and the Boston Pops!

4. Rejuvenate interest in Maureen Dowd by simple policy: everytime she drops a juvenile reference to a tv series on HBO or Showtime, she has to "show raw nip"

3. Finally admit that urban liberal media professionals only care about what other urban liberal media professionals think; henceforth, polls will only ask questions of employees of People For The American Way, the Washington Monthly, Mother Jones Magazine, and the rhythm section of Outkast

2. Appease readers by declaring 2005 through 2008 to be "rebuilding seasons;" promise to strengthen the paper through the draft and free-agent pick-ups

...and the Number One Proposal Being Considered To Boost the NYTimes' Falling Profits...

1. New managing editor in chief: Vinne Fuckin' Falcone

Sweet indeed.

One of the 10 proposals should include pay-per-view nude Mud Wrestling featuring Maureen Dowd and Paul Krugman. She'd finally be doing something entertaining and I'd love to him get his ass whipped.

Posted by: bullwinkle on October 19, 2005 01:46 PM

Finally release the porn video of the entire NYTimes staff giving Bill Clinton fellatio.

Also second in their continuing series of Pay-per view events, Maureen Dowd and Hillary! ™ wrestle in K-Y jelly.

Posted by: Iblis on October 19, 2005 01:57 PM

I don't know, Ace. There's something just, well, "right" about ending the list at #3. It's kind of a metaphysical nuanced uh... homilies that symbolizes the utter hopelessness of the Times being saved when facing such a hard, fact-orientated world.

Or something like that.

Posted by: Xoxotl on October 19, 2005 02:02 PM

#4?

No.

No, no, no, no, nooooo.

No.

Cheers,

I think she's kind of hot - in that "still trying to hold on to her cheerleading youth, but in reality is a dirty, dirty girl" kind of way.

"4. Rejuvenate interest in Maureen Dowd by simple policy: everytime she drops a juvenile reference to a tv series on HBO or Showtime, she has to 'show raw nip'"

I'm de-linking you.

Posted by: Sobek on October 19, 2005 02:19 PM

On a whim, I googled "Maureen Dowd nude" (but not in quotes) and was SHOCKED, SHOCKED that Ann Althouse was #1 and not Ace...

Posted by: JFH on October 19, 2005 02:24 PM
Your search - "maureen dowd" "raw nip" - did not match any documents.

That will change once the Google-bot finds this page.

Bastard.

Posted by: Phinn on October 19, 2005 02:34 PM

Excellent! You haven't written anything this funny in a couple months!

4. Rejuvenate interest in Maureen Dowd by simple policy: everytime she drops a juvenile reference to a tv series on HBO or Showtime, she has to "show raw nip"

First, they'd better rejuvenate Maureen Dowd. Didn't she used to go out with President Bartlett?

Posted by: utron on October 19, 2005 02:37 PM

No, she went out with a much older man-- Michael Douglas.

Posted by: ace on October 19, 2005 02:38 PM

No, she went out with a much older man-- Michael Douglas.

I stand corrected. Sheen, Douglas, Kerry--all those guys kind of blur together.

Posted by: utron on October 19, 2005 02:42 PM

Whoa.... What's wrong with the Boston Pops?

... Besides their being from Boston I mean.

Posted by: Chad on October 19, 2005 02:47 PM

Re: #7

How come Von Kreedon didn't make the list?

Posted by: MH on October 19, 2005 02:50 PM

MH, I think its because Von Kreep still has a hinge.

Posted by: Iblis on October 19, 2005 02:54 PM

Great indeed this is the best yet the infamous New York Pravda is losing readers in fact even their birds dont want it at the bottom of their cages

Posted by: spurwing plover on October 19, 2005 02:57 PM

Vinny Falcone won't be available. Take my word for it.

How about a Cosmo-type cover? "10 places your man wants you to touch". That kinda crap!

Posted by: Nickie Goomba on October 19, 2005 08:14 PM

Wouldn't you hate to be the GM for the NYT? I mean, you've got a thoroughly mediocre team whose popularity is due solely to its once glorious past. Kind of like the Washington Redskins. You want to get out in front, but you'd be looking at firing longtime personnel with dedicated (if unbalanced) followings (Krugman and Dowd, at the minimum) and going through a humiliating next few years.

Strategically, this is where I think they should go:

1. Fire the editors, hire replacements whose sole purpose is to edit and select stories that provide news without analysis.

2. Suspend the practice of issuing editorials. There was a notorious incident a few years ago where the NYT actually endorsed the Boston Red Sox to win the AL Pennant over the New York Times ... without telling the readers that the NYT Co. was a partial owner of the Red Sox. Until the editors clean up their act, the newspaper shouldn't be issuing opinions.

3. Fire Krugman and Dowd. All these people do is spew invective. If one must, hire a real economist who actually does interesting and compelling research. As for replacing Dowd, get a professional female comedien (gotta maintain the quota). At least the column will be entertaining.

4. Get someone like Bill Parcells to run the place in order to cut the egos down to size. The main problem, over and beyond the liberal bias, is the sheer arrogance of the people in the organization. They truly believe they are the standard of modern-day journalism.

5. Get real conservatives in the opinion pages, not the watered-down New York types. And then have them debate your "first-team" liberals. I'm sure people like Thomas Sowell and Michelle Malkin would be happy to help the NYT out. If the adventures of the Krugman Truth Squad are any indication, I think the rest of the NYT columnists will be in a run for their money. And it would give conservatives a reason to at least a reason to visit the website.

Oops, I meant to say, "...the NYT actually endorsed the Boston Red Sox to win the AL Pennant over the New York Yankees..."

Stupidity is its own reward (and punishment).

1. New managing editor in chief: Vinne Fuckin' Falcone

Vinnie would run a tight paper. No loose shit. The guys would get shirts, the guys would wear those shirts, and the cut-off on My Way would be fucking clean.
NYT, don't make a maniac outta me.

Posted by: lauraw on October 19, 2005 09:17 PM

Here's an idea: revamp the "Times Select" program so that for your $49.95/year, you never have to hear anything from Maureen Dowd, Paul Krugman and Frank Rich ever again.

Never. Ever. Again. And for an extra ten bucks, they'll slap duct tape across the mouth of your least favorite Times columnist for good measure.

They'll be back in the black in no time. And the climate of big-media journalism will be greatly improved in the bargain...

Posted by: Wes S. on October 19, 2005 10:01 PM

The part that baffles me the most is how they lost this profit potential partially due to expenses related to job cuts! What the fuck? I thought you fired people to save money. Gotta be a pretty piss-poor CFO to fuck that up.

And I'd totally fuck the shit out of Dowd. Damn right she'd be ball-gagged...

Finally, EricTheRed21, I will beat you in the skull with a Redskins helmet while I force you to toss Daniel Snyder's salad.

Posted by: Jason on October 19, 2005 11:00 PM

Gee, I would think one of the proposals they'd consider is, "Actually begin to practice investigative journalism."

Posted by: bbeck on October 19, 2005 11:17 PM

Chad, two words: absolutely nothing. That's why they're so out of place on PBS. (Can anyone say, "Journal Editorial Report"?)

Posted by: The Black Republican on October 20, 2005 12:05 PM

"urban liberal media professionals"...

If you swapped liberal and urban, we could call them LUMPies...

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.
(((Dan Hodges)))
@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:
spidermanthreatormenace.jpg

That was written by Denny O'Neill and illustrated by, get this, Frank Miller. Editor to the Stars Jim Shooter was in charge at the time.
I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
