More Than One-Quarter Of Europeans Are, Clinically, "Batshit Crazy"

Garsh, I never would have figured:

Mental illness affects over 27% of European adults every year, and is responsible for the majority of the annual 58000 deaths by suicide, more than the number who die in traffic accidents.

The European Commission adopted Monday a Green Paper with the aim to launch an action plan on how better to tackle mental illness and promote mental well-being in the EU.

Mental health levels can have a significant influence on the economic and social welfare of society.

"More than one in four Europeans suffer from mental illness every year, and it can cost our economies up to four per cent of GDP in lost productivity and other social costs," said Markos Kyprianou, EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection.

Awesome. Europe's answer to depression and other mental illnesses will be more obtrusive and condescending government programs.

I'm not one for predictions, but I'll go out on a limb here: This one just can't fail.

European Bureaucrats

Because the road to hell just doesn't pave itself, you know.

Thanks to cutaway.

I like how they view the problem as primarily economic, and then propose to solve it by spending lots of money.

Posted by: Sobek on October 17, 2005 03:46 PM

Well, clearly if mental illness kills more Europeans than traffic accidents, the solution is simply to drive more.

Duh.

My advice for them would be to start drinking heavily.

Wait....

Nevermind.

Posted by: CUS on October 17, 2005 03:52 PM

Let's see what the US National Institute of Mental Health has to say about mental health in the USofA:
An estimated 22.1 percent of Americans ages 18 and older—about 1 in 5 adults—suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.

It would appear that Europe and the US have similar rates of mental health disorders, but the EU is taking it seriously.

Posted by: vonKreedon on October 17, 2005 04:16 PM

I don't know if "mental illness" was defined the same in the respective studies, but the rate in the U.S. actually appears to be very similar:

The survey found that in the U.S., mental disorders are quite common; 26 percent of the general population reported that they had symptoms sufficient for diagnosing a mental disorder during the past 12 months. However, many of these cases are mild or will resolve without formal interventions.

Our total number of suicide deaths per annum is lower (around 30,000 versus Europe's 58,000), but our population is only about 65% of the EU's population.

Posted by: Hubris on October 17, 2005 04:16 PM

Oops, vonKreedon, we posted at the same time, sorry about the partial redundancy.

I don't see any evidence in the linked article that the EU is taking things more seriously than the U.S. (we completed our survey first! USA! USA!).

It's easy to adopt an action plan, our own government agencies do it all the time.

I'm not saying that the EU doesn't do a better job vis-a-vis mental health (I have no idea), I just don't think that the linked article particularly provides evidence of that assertion.

Posted by: Hubris on October 17, 2005 04:21 PM

BDS by any other name.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on October 17, 2005 04:24 PM

There are lots of things that are classified as "mental illnesses" that I would dispute: bipolar disorder, depression, ADHD, ADD, and introversion are described as clinical illnesses. And yet this may just mean you are moody, sad, jittery, or shy.

This is not to say that there aren't serious mental illnesses, but this is a ridiculously inflated number. Just another example of the "therapy culture" we were discussing in an earlier thread. The West is drowning in a "poor poor pitiful me" syndrome.

Bah.

Posted by: Monty on October 17, 2005 04:32 PM

At least it explains the whole David Hasselhof thing.

Posted by: FreakyBoy on October 17, 2005 04:57 PM

Monty-
You are correct sir, this is about the Oprahfication of society.
And it's also about money. The therapy industry is slavering after those sweet, sweet, Medicare and SS bucks.
Our local lefty rag, the Saint Louis Post-Disgrace, publishes a letter from one witch doctor or another almost every week proclaiming the need for government dollars for mental health "care". They want to do for head-doctoring what Medicare did for family practice.
Fucking bureaucrats and ambulance chasers.

Posted by: rickinstl on October 17, 2005 04:59 PM

Most Americans self-medicate -- with beer.

Its obvious why the US has lower numbers for suicide and loons - we have fewer hard core leftists.

Does running around in garb a la The Mddle Ages and pretending to sword fight constitute mental illness? Yep, I thougt so too.

Posted by: compos mentis on October 17, 2005 05:12 PM

Unluckily I never get to use the designation "batshit crazy" in my work but it does have a certain ring to it. Maybe I can petition the A.P.A. to add it to its list of designated mental diseases in the next installment of the diagnostic manual. They probably won't though. sigh

Rove, you've done it again. Upped the suicide rate in Europe.

Posted by: JB on October 17, 2005 05:13 PM

I, for one think this only reinforces the need to remove God from all aspects of our public life. Yeah, I think this cements that. (snark)

Posted by: Jake Jacobsen on October 17, 2005 05:14 PM

"Batshit crazy" does seem a bit strong for Europe.

I suggest "sorority-girl crazy."

Yeah, St. Louis has been going downhill ever since the Globe-Democrat folded.

I remember that we asked the computer experts if Y2K was a real threat and they assured us it was. It was a self-serving answer because they made tons of dough solving a non-existant problem.
Now we are asking the Mental Health professionals about the percentage of people needing their help? Don't you think they will assure us that everyone can benefit from thier ministrations.

Posted by: Bindare on October 17, 2005 10:50 PM

Y2K threats were real, but we took them seriously and paid for the required mitigation work so that very little actually happened. But feel free to develop a conspiracy theory instead, it will make it easier to dismiss the other looming crises.

I, too, remember the terrible consequences of a machine thinking it was 1900 when it was really 2000.

Lots of people stocked up on canned goods and hid in their basements, and tried not to look embarassed on January 1st.

Posted by: Sortelli on October 18, 2005 03:01 AM

The doomsday "china syndrome" scenarios were piffle right from the start. Anyone with those sort of critical systems dealt with it.

A real problem is coming up in about 20 years or so when the Unix clocks roll over. Good old crust DOS is good for another 60 years or so before it rolls over.

Posted by: Purple Avenger on October 18, 2005 03:34 AM

You know, I remember the Y2K horror stories, and talk about airplanes falling out of the sky, machines coming to life to attack us, etc. My parents didn't want me to fly on Dec 31st, just in case the 757 I was on decided that it needed to pile into the Rockies because it was Jan 1, 1900 for some reason.

I also remember that Russia, which apparently spent approximately $8.32 on Y2k prep, sailed through with nary a hitch. I think a large part of the hype was to help aging COBOL programmers make $500 an hour as consultants, an enterprise I wholeheartedly support.

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.
(((Dan Hodges)))
@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
