NO Cops' Beating Victim: It's Not Racial Bias, Just Some "Rotten Apples"

The guy has the restraint of a saint.

Joseph Bruno, the attorney for Davis, said his client does not believe the assault was racially motivated.

"I know there is a big temptation to go there, but my client firmly believes that is not what is involved here," Bruno said in an interview.

Instead, Bruno said, Davis believes he was assaulted by "a couple of rotten apples that need to be dealt with."

If I took an undeserved whoopin' like that I think I'd be hard pressed not to start screaming "racism" myself.

There's something very hopeful about a travesty like this for once not being viewed through the us vs. them racial prism that so poisons relations between blacks and whites.

I have a feeling that this guy doesn't want to push his luck. Wouldn't do for the news guys to go snooping through his police record. Just a hunch.

Posted by: DB on October 11, 2005 04:58 PM

This poor guy is just a simple Uncle Tom who is used to being beat down by the system. Reparations for this agregious act are not enough. We will must mobilize the media to highlight this act, demand a civil rights investigation, and coerce some bling from N.O. police dept.

That, my friends, is the only way to affect real social progress.

Amen, if indeed there is a 'travesty' here. I'd hope that these guys were only trying to restrain someone who was really out of line and uncooperative. If not, they should be in jail.
But hey, perhaps these are some of those New Orleans stressed out cops, some of the ones that still haven't had their trip to Vegas...

Posted by: Uncle Jefe on October 11, 2005 05:06 PM

The beating was awful to watch. And I don't think he deserved it at all and the police should be punished. But I saw the guy today and he said that he was asking a black officer for the time. And the other officer intevened and the guy said he told him to back off or something. He said he admitted he was rude.

what the hell is that about? You were asking the time and got beat up???? Me thinks there were some rude comments made and the officer snapped.

I always tell my kids, if you get stopped by the police the proper response to everything they say is Yes sir, no sir (or mam as the case may be) NEVER argue.

Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on October 11, 2005 05:14 PM

RWS, can I get a ruling on "kiss my ass, officer sir"?

Posted by: Dave in Texas on October 11, 2005 05:35 PM

Policeman has a gun and a stick.

Policeman has a phone, and a number he can call to get more guys with guns and sticks.

"Yes, sir" isn't just the Law, it's a Good Idea.

Meanwhile, excitable Andy is patting himself on the back for being one of the few principled critics of Bush.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on October 11, 2005 05:45 PM

This guy sounds like he might be from my tribe.

Posted by: Silk on October 11, 2005 06:04 PM

So, maybe he did an unwise thing saying something flippant to a stressed-out cop. Unwise, but not illegal, and certainly understandable if his version of the story is at all accurate.

If this situation is what it looks like, then those cops need to be charged with assault. I'm sorry, but cops acting like thugs is something that we as a society need to have zero tolerance for.

As to Davis' insistence that it wasn't racially motivated, I'd guess that part of it is that he understandably doesn't want a repeat of anything like the Rodney King riots.

Posted by: SJKevin on October 11, 2005 06:34 PM

Uh, the stressed-out cop thing was a joke, Kevin.
Ya know, free trip to Vegas?

Posted by: Uncle Jefe on October 11, 2005 07:10 PM

Here in Europe (well, at least Portugal...) the press are having a field day with this. "See, i told you those damn Americans were all racists!" seems to be the phrase of the day.

Posted by: madne0 on October 11, 2005 07:18 PM

He deserves a medal! Conversely the MSM/DNC deserve to be given dunce hats and sent to the corner.

Posted by: Rodney A Stanton on October 11, 2005 08:31 PM

Right, because Portugese cops never beat on, say, Moroccan immigrants. Nope, never.

Posted by: Knemon on October 11, 2005 08:31 PM

Of course that's not an excuse. SJKevin is right: if this is what it looks like, it is 150% not okay.

For a cop to cross the line like this is 10 times worse than for a non-cop. With great power ... well, you know the rest.

Posted by: Knemon on October 11, 2005 08:34 PM

I got an e-mail from a friend in Britain saying the same thing. They are playing this up and saying "Look at the brutal racist Americans!" Never mind the millions of great police officers out there every day saving our asses! ARRGGHHHHH!!!!!!

Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on October 11, 2005 09:18 PM

Two thoughts:

You should treat cops with respect, but you don't have to suck up to them as if we live in a Police State. This isn't the USSR.

By declining to play the race card, this guy's credibility skyrocketed.

Posted by: Steve O on October 12, 2005 09:27 AM

More thoughts:
Typically, when I see video for one of these beatdowns, I have a knee-jerk reaction to side with the cops because the suspect is flipping out, tossing himself around, etc. From what I saw of THIS video, though, they basically had this old guy up against the wall before one of the cops started punching him in the back of the head.

You also have to consider what a shitty, corrupt police force New Orleans has. They make New York's Mafia Cops look like saints. The substantial portion of the force--both white and black--is on the take.

Posted by: ken on October 12, 2005 12:48 PM

The NOPD, should be totally disbanded, the state and counnty LEOs run the city untill a new police NO department is formed, uncorrupt from the ground up.

Oops...how can a corrupt city government run by a corrupt city Mayor and city council form a clean NOPD.

NOPD officials and officers are a disgrace to the nations police dervices.

A 42 year retired LEO.

Knemon: Moroccan immigrants? Probably not. Fortunately we still haven't been infected, err...invaded by Muslim "immigrants". Latest census showed around 50000 muslims in a population of 10.5 million.

Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. -- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.

@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:

That was written by Denny O'Neill and illustrated by, get this, Frank Miller. Editor to the Stars Jim Shooter was in charge at the time.
I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
