Pentagon Hosts Driverless Car RaceStanley the Volkswagen, designed by Stanford University, zipped through the 132-mile Mojave Desert course in six hours and 53 minutes Saturday, using only its computer brain and sensors to navigate rough and twisting desert and mountain trails. Wicked cool. You know, I read articles about this from a couple of other sources, but only in SignOnSandiego did I find this sentence: The $2 million reward was funded by taxpayers. Ah. OK then. Thanks for the tip, hammerhead. UPDATE: The more I think about that sneaky-bland little sentence the more pissed I get. -Unless she thinks Americans shouldn't be paying for it. Then the little stand-alone sentence makes total sense. posted by LauraW. at 09:34 PM
CommentsBetter than paying some defense company a billion dollars to develop the same thing Posted by: Jake on October 9, 2005 09:59 PM
Agreed. The Pentagon could have spent that in a lot worse ways, and the research has a lot of potential outside military uses too. Posted by: Sortelli on October 9, 2005 10:01 PM
Exactly - I was thinking this gadget would make a nifty "rats nest cleaner" that would be cheaper than operating fighter aircraft or helicopters. Posted by: Purple Avenger on October 9, 2005 10:02 PM
I mean, imagine, if you will, an automated system that could use its tiny computer brain to navigate the internet and interject the most ridiculous statements into unrelated discussions. We could call it "tubino". Posted by: Sortelli on October 9, 2005 10:03 PM
Sortelli, LOL!!! Posted by: lauraw on October 9, 2005 10:19 PM
I don't understand why it is bad for a journalist to inform readers where their tax money is going. I support this use of taxpayer money, and I support journalists telling us where our tax money is going. Last year no one made the finish line, I didn't think any would make it this year either (the course is very difficult). Technology is improving rapidly. Posted by: Village Idiot on October 9, 2005 10:36 PM
Well, DARPA goosed it by doubling the prize money at the same time it made the course harder. Posted by: lauraw on October 9, 2005 10:40 PM
We could call it "tubino". Weapon of mass distortion. Posted by: on October 9, 2005 10:47 PM
How can we bitch about $2 million when Posted by: digitalbrownshirt on October 9, 2005 10:48 PM
The $2 million reward was funded by taxpayers. The DoD should send out a SpecOps team to systematically start robbing Starbucks around the country to get the cash for these kind of rewards. Posted by: Purple Avenger on October 9, 2005 10:52 PM
Those UN bastards bombed the Smurfs? I'm calling for massive retalitory strikes - now. First it was piglet and pooh, now this? Unacceptable, simply unacceptable. Posted by: Purple Avenger on October 9, 2005 10:55 PM
It may be an overreaction; its definitely a good idea to talk about where the money comes from, if its done consistently when discussing government programs. But the typical MSM thing is to say 'funded by the NEA,' or somesuch without invoking the primary source of the funds. Which makes this look suspicious to me. Posted by: lauraw on October 9, 2005 11:03 PM
Hi all, Saw my name come up. Nice to know I'm not forgotten. The joke is that pretty much all the points I've made over the last few weeks -- Bush's fiscal irresponsibility, the Republican partisan cronyism over competence, the apparently criminal mismanagement of Iraq funds (the infamous $8.8B), the endless representations by the Bush admin about progress in Iraq -- are gradually being admitted by the rightwing bloggers, including some on this list. Carry on. But remember, I was there first. Today's word: INDICTMENTS. Posted by: tubino on October 9, 2005 11:12 PM
No threadjacking please. Posted by: lauraw on October 9, 2005 11:16 PM
lauraw: "But the typical MSM thing is to say 'funded by the NEA,' or somesuch without invoking the primary source of the funds." What does this mean? If something is said to be funded by Dept of Defense, or NIH, or NEA... that *is* the primary source of funds. At least in the world I live in (grants). The exception would be pass-throughs and block grants... or "black budget" programs, where they have to kill you if they tell you. Honestly, I don't know what you mean, lauraw. Posted by: tubino on October 9, 2005 11:16 PM
The technology is more promising every year. Before too long, I think we will see ground versions of the predator drone, maybe something like a scaled-down tank, robot-controlled, able to go into an enemy held villiage and seek out weapons caches by itself, able to defend itself, etc. It's not a Bolo, not yet, but we are getting there. As for the cost, robots will be a lot cheaper than human lives (at least on our side). Maybe in another decade or two the US army will look more like the imperial troops from Star Wars, with high-tech human troops reinforced by droid weapon systems. Which brings another question: When can we build a Death Star? Posted by: BattleofthePyramids on October 9, 2005 11:16 PM
starve Posted by: lauraw on October 9, 2005 11:20 PM
BotP - "When can we build a Death Star?" Comment: When are we going to get off this ball of rock so that we could actually use a Death Star? If we're all busy living on only one planet, a planet-destroying gizmo is just a fancy means of suicide. Posted by: cthulhu on October 9, 2005 11:23 PM

Don't we need to build a Darth Vader before we build a Death Star? How about a Darth Nader? Posted by: Bart on October 10, 2005 12:06 AM
I have to know -- were any of the entries a black Trans Am with a red oscillating Cylon-like eye and speak in a cultured yet exasperated tone to the wristwatch of the chest-hair-exposing human next to it? If so, did anyone make sure the other black Trans Am in the race that was barely beat out get immediately smelted before it could turn to a life of evil? I suppose Tubino's question indicates he is unable to read. Check the front page again: "The $2 million reward was funded by taxpayers" is the quote Laura to which Laura refers. Posted by: Lapsed Leftist on October 10, 2005 12:46 AM
You know what is really funny, tubino? Everyone in the world agrees with me and you're wrong. That's pretty hilarious. Just trying to speak your language here. YOU WERE THERE FIRST! When you post, does your screen have a [POST] button or an [OBFUSCATE] button? Posted by: Sortelli on October 10, 2005 01:02 AM
cthullu: Well, of course I would want us to have the product-improved Death Star, which has proper shielding around its exhaust ports. Until we have hyperdrive, we could use it against asteroids or aliens. I am looking forward to our going back to the Moon as a first step to the conquest of Mars - just think of the prison space we will have:) Posted by: BattleofthePyramids on October 10, 2005 01:16 AM
Mass prisoner deportations to the moon would be good. Really no need to wait for any shelters. Just let'em impact like lawn darts. All the suitable "lunar paradise" propaganda for the mushbrained public can be faked up just like in Capricorn One. Its not like anyone is going up there to check...and if they try, they can join the lawn darts too. Posted by: Purple Avenger on October 10, 2005 02:46 AM
I wouldn't really mind the "funded by taxpayers" bit so much if, in the corner of my mind, I wasn't convinced that the reporter would be just fine if the taxpayers had funded a crucifix in a jar of piss. Posted by: Dave S on October 10, 2005 04:09 PM

Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. Robinson voice "where's your cuck now?" I posted his post on twitter and it's gotten 25K views so far. Thanks, Smell the Glove Chris

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source" Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held. Basil the Great
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.
Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing. Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult. Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending. (((Dan Hodges))) Nick Lowles
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98. Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years. Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45 Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%. I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens. REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs. Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:
![]() That was written by Denny O'Neill and illustrated by, get this, Frank Miller. Editor to the Stars Jim Shooter was in charge at the time. I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
