Newsweek: What Really Changed Judy's Mind

Michael Isikoff:

Oct. 10, 2005 issue - New York Times reporter Judy Miller broke her silence and agreed to testify before a federal grand jury last week. This followed tense, often acrimonious negotiations that began after special Justice Department prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald signaled he intended to reimpanel a new grand jury—a move that could have kept Miller in jail for another year and a half, say two lawyers close to the case who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the talks.

So, remember the theory Miller was spinning about a misunderstanding being the real reason she was in jail – one that once she was able to speak to the source about personally, well, the problem evaporated? Recall how Miller’s lawyers said Libby’s side originally gave signals as to the coerced nature of his waiver (and which Libby’s side responds to in the linked article, referring to such as ‘Bullshit')?

Well, looks more and more like Tate, Libby’s lawyer, was telling the truth. If Isikoff is right, what really changed Miller’s mind was the prospect of a new grand jury and eighteen more months of jail.

I suppose it could still be true that there really was a voluntariness issue all along, and Miller's team was actively encouraged to re-probe Libby as to his voluntariness once the 'new grand jury' talk started (that would certainly get me off my ass). But it begins to look more like Miller's lawyer's tale of "That's not what you originally said" is just a cover story, a face saving claim for a client that broke under the threat of more jail.

I realize that Sundays are Ace's hangover/clinic test result days, and as such you're overworked here Dr Symes, but not a thing on the OKC bombing?
Or even on that moron Drudge burying it halfway down the site while trumpeting: "Sutherland blasts Bush".

Posted by: HowardDevore on October 2, 2005 09:53 PM

Yeah, saw that bombing. What's the story? Just some kid decided to blow himself up, right? Not terrorist ties or nothing, I just don't see the dealio.

Er, that's me above.

This is an interesting development - journalist groups in a tizzy because its over.

Pillars of journalism? I always thought the 3 pillars of journalism were lie, cheat, and steal.

MIAMI HERALD

New York Times reporter Judith Miller's decision to escape jail by testifying about her conversations with a confidential source surprised some of her supporters and left journalists wondering what her choice will mean for press freedoms...

...News of her release from jail was greeted with joy by some of the organizations that had supported her, but also some dismay.

"Miller's release is obviously good news in itself," said the press freedom group Reporters Without Borders, "but she recovered her freedom in exchange for naming her source, albeit with the source's agreement, which means that the principle of the confidentiality of sources, one of the pillars of journalism, has been flouted."

...predicted its outcome would embolden other prosecutors to investigate press leaks, jailing reporters if necessary.

"This is very dangerous territory," she said.

Howard Devore: I got the OU bombing covered here and here. I sent a link to Ace last night, but never heard back from him.

Posted by: digitalbrownshirt on October 2, 2005 11:03 PM

OK - I take it back, Doc. That actually IS a lot simpler than the mosque theory.

So much for standing on principle, not that she had any defensible principle to stand on in the first place.

Posted by: Patton on October 2, 2005 11:53 PM

So now that the prosecuter has broken the "reporter", she had better spill her guts and finally "speak truth to power," the power of a panel of citizens serving as a grand jury.

We need to put a stop to this manufacturing of synthetic scandals for partisian purposes. It's diverting at best and disinformational at worst. Of course, it can unjustly ruin careers and lifes too.

I'll bet that when the truth comes out, Joe Wilson will be the source, but that's just my speculation.

Of course, I never spend a dime on the WaPo or the NYT and cancelled my local paper in part because they stuffed their fishwrapper with this crapola. Maybe the best way to deal with the problem is have their revenues evaporate.

Apparently Fitzgerald offered a deal. He would limit his interrogation to questions about Libby. It appears that he wants to close out that part of his investigation.

And then?

He says he'll impanel a new Grand Jury. If he's done with the Libby/Rove 'leak', what is he pursuing? And further, if this is the threat that broke Judy Miller, what is she concealing?

Fitzgerald may very well have promised to limit his questions in front of this Grand Jury without any guarantee for the successor GJ. Judy Miller may find herself back in front of a prosecutor, and back in jail, in a matter of months.

lyle: Now that would make sense. Otherwise hard to see why Fitz would sign away the one interesting part of her testimony.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
