Gay Penguin Goes Straight

This has been bubbling around out there for a while; just getting around to noting it. I know it's old.

The animal kingdom's most famous gay couple has split up. Silo and Roy, the cohabiting penguins of Central Park Zoo, are no longer an item.

The pair rose to prominence six years ago when they came out with their same-sex relationship.

Silo tearfully confessed that "telling his father" was the most difficult part.

Since then, they have successfully hatched and raised an adoptive chick (after an uncertain start that involved trying to incubate a rock).

Well, yes, that's really not the sort of image these Gay Penguin Activists wanted to project. Fortunately, these Stonewall Rebels of the flightless-bird world have had some success:

They blazed a trail for six other gay penguin couples at the zoo.

I could not even begin to guess at what this sentence could possibly mean. Unless they mean these predatory perverted puffinkin "recruited" other penguins into the "gay penguin lifestyle"?

But the affair ended when Scrappy, a new female penguin, moved into the neighbourhood and caught Silo's eye.

...

Silo promptly moved in with Scrappy, building a new nest with her.

You know the writer wanted to call Scrappy a whore. I think a different edit of this story did in fact refer to Scrappy as a "homewrecker."

A little bit of cutesy joking, yes, but you know that the media was really rooting for these young kids to make it together.

Zookeepers are at a loss to explain Silo's sudden conversion.

I'll say it: penguin pooter. Is there anything it can't do?

But seriously, some homosexuality is opportunistic, or rather lack-of-opportunistic. Guys in prison don't suddenly start having sex with other dudes because they've just decided to "experiment" while in a college-like environment.

Sir,

How far has political correctness gone? A group of
endangered penguins start acting strangely, engaging
in homosexuality and trying to hatch rocks. Are they
queer or just retards? Before we can determine the
cause of this clearly pathological behaviour, the PC
homosexuals get involved, taking a principled stand on
penguin sexuality. Never mind that the logical
conclusion to this episode is extinction. Better
extinction of the species than attempting to
facilitate normal, wild, heterosexual behaviour
(sexual reproduction which insures survival of the
species) in captive birds.

Now, birds are dying of sexually transmitted behaviour
in, where else, the San Francisco zoo. Experts suspect
that it the chlamydia was transmitted via bird
droppings. But can we be sure? Shouldn't we provide
the penguins with counseling, let them know that if
they are gay or "questioning", it's nothing to be
afraid of. Maybe put up some billboards in their
enclosure, indoctrinate their young in the ways of
safe sex. Let them know that fisting is fun, always
use a condom and don't do meth and have unsafe sex.
Clearly, unless the government gets involved, we are
consigning these penguins to second class citizen
status. What does the government exist for if not to
promote healthy sexuality (so long as it's not the
homophobic theocracy type of sexuality, the one
involving committment and reproduction).

Sincerely,

rcl

I always thought that with a lot of gay animals, it could be a sinus problem, since that's the main way a lot of things can tell males and females apart.

Try to say "Penguin Pooter" 6 times fast.

Posted by: Village Idiot on September 26, 2005 07:12 PM

I saw March of the Penguins last weeked. I wiped a tear and came away with the heartwarming message that "life really sucks." Is there something wrong with me?

Posted by: S. Weasel on September 26, 2005 07:28 PM

So, how long before Andrew Sullivan blames this on the Pope?

Posted by: Sean M. on September 26, 2005 07:44 PM

The pair rose to prominence six years ago when they came out with their same-sex relationship.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

And that's important to note, since behavior that appears in nature is therefore normal and good. So, like the lions of Africa, I guess it's okay for a stepdad to kill the kids from the previous marriage so the woman will come into heat again. Or wait...

The whole "studying homosexuality in the animal kingdom" act that's so fashionable nowadays is driven by left-wing agenda politics, pure and simple. Transposing human sexuality onto other animals in an attempt to justify the human behavior.

Heck, my female cockerspaniel (RIP) used to hump my leg, other female dogs, male dogs, inanimate objects, and so on and so forth. Does that make her a butch-lesbian-interspecies-where's-my-strapon cockerspaniel whose sexuality and proclivity for reading the Village Voice needs to be respected? Or was she just an incredibly stupid animal whose instincts where out of wack?

Another point is that if it's fair to transpose human sexuality onto animals and declare it homosexual, what's a logical reason why the street can't go the other way? Take what's considered homosexual behavior in animals (penguins for example: the males just hanging out with each other and not breeding with the females), then apply that standard to humans. Hence all you guys that just spent the spring and summer season hanging out with your male friends instead of breeding are now "gay". What utter nonsense.

Posted by: Otho Laurence on September 26, 2005 08:34 PM

I think its outrageuous for anyone to protest the idea of allowing an animal to experience one of their natural things: breeding with the opposite sex. Thats just outright ridiculous to protest that.

And its really none of their damn business what the zoo decides to do: as long they are not abusing the animals.

Posted by: AlanB on September 26, 2005 08:46 PM

...as long they are not abusing the animals...

But they are -- all penguin requests for butt plugs, bondage gear, and 5gal pails of Dr Zog's Sex Wax have been stonewalled by zoo administration.

As Frank Zappa informed us years ago - penguins and bondage go together like peas and pods. The ACLU has recently filed suit in discrict court asserting denial of these most fundamental penguin aids does in fact constitute "abuse".

I guess there is a counterpart to Anne Heche in the animal kingdom.

The homosexuality in prison comments is that from personal expierence? Or from watching "OZ"?

They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.

Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
