Weekend Geek Confession

Does anybody else remember that Battlebots show that was on Comedy Central a few years back? I really enjoyed it a lot, because who doesn't enjoy robots banging the crap out of each other, pulverizers and killsaws tagging the unwary robot drivers, and in general geek mayhem?

The whole "turning crap into functioning (and sometimes useful) machinery" thing got me hooked on Battlebots as well as a Junkyard Wars. I like American Chopper for similar reasons, except there you get a lot of high-priced machinery and heavy doses of the Teutels screaming in entertaining fashion at each other (and their employees - long live Vinny!)

Anyway, what the hell was my point? Oh yeah, Battlebots.

This is why I find myself in Rochester, NY for a weekend. I'm at the two-day Rochester Robot Rampage, sponsored by the Battlebots folks. Two days of robot carnage.

God, I'm such a geek, aren't I? Ah well. Such is life.

oh, PHEW, this post was by Harry. I was really worried about Ace for a minute there.

Posted by: lauraw on September 24, 2005 09:24 AM

So is that good or bad for me?

Posted by: Harry Callahan on September 24, 2005 09:32 AM

Hey whatever floats your boat.
My husband liked those battlebot shows too.

It's still good flame-war material though.

Posted by: lauraw on September 24, 2005 09:36 AM

Harry, Ignore 'em.

My kids and I loved that 'Bot show (especially the fact that no BLEEPs were requried). And like you, I've gotten hooked on the "We Can Build It Better" shows, even occassionally watching MTV for that Pimp My Ride a few mintuess at a time (until some chump with his pants half falling off comes on-screen or some other inarticulate human embarrasses himself).

But the best part of all that came when I watched Charlie the Painter on American Hot Rod tell Mr. "I'll-So-Spiffy" Boyd and Mr. "I'm-So-Tough" Duayne that he was quitting. And then Boyd said "You're not going to Foose, are you?" Yes!
And just a few days ago I saw a show (on the latest car shows I think, I was clicking) with Chip Foose and there was Charlie. Awesome!

I love seeing people get what they deserve. Treat your employees like crap and they will leave you high and dry!

Okay, enough geek crap.

Posted by: Megan on September 24, 2005 12:22 PM

I don't like that show much. I think inclined planes and flipper robots should be outlawed. They're boring. I want to see damange.

Also, is it just me, or does anyone want to see shotguns mounted on these things? Make the glass around the arena bullet proof and let the robots have some projectiles and flamethrowers.

I used to love Junkyard Wars, until that really cool girl hosting the show left.

Posted by: ace on September 24, 2005 12:47 PM

I just pull up a lawn chair at a couple of the intersections near where I live. Within the hour there's guaranteed to be real live carnage.

Humans in SUV's are dumber and far more destructive than robots.

ace: The Koreans are working on it. We could watch the fights on CNN.

The only thing better than watching those shows/competitions, is diving in and trying it yourself. Way fun.

Who goes to Rochester on purpose?!?!

Seek help.

Speaking of geekiness and robots... if anyone is into Java (or wants to learn to be) IBM has this cool thing called Robocode... www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/robocode/

You get to code the behavior of a robot and drop it into an arena to fight other peoples' robots. Pretty cool... if you like that sort of thing.

As one who grew up there, spent over 25 years there, I can only say Good call. If the sun shone more often and it wasn't infested by canadian weather it would be a nice place.

That goes for Buffalo and Syracuse too.

Posted by: Defense Guy on September 26, 2005 09:36 AM

If only Battlebots and American Chopper could have gotten together for some truly stylish carnage!

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
