Rock Star: INXS ThreadBumped for the elimination show. Don't read if you're on the west coast and don't want to know about the show. Oh, and if the three people watching the show post comments, try to avoid giving any spoilers in the first 100 characters of text-- because your spoiler will show up in the Most Recent Comments section, and people will end up reading them even if they want to avoid it. If you can't think of anything to pad out your comment, try writing "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog and then stole his snausages" or something before your actual comment. So, anyway, if you're watching, you know that: JD can't sing, and is very arrogant regarding his spectaculr non-talent. Plus, I continue getting a weird vibe off them. Three weird vibes, actually: 1) Nazi skinhead 2) gay hustler 3) The Talented Mr. Ripley There's a fine line between driving ambition and creepy ruthlessness. Try to stay on the right side of that line, JD. Suzie's too cutsie and not right for the band. Jordis has no soul. She's a folkie, not a rocker. Or maybe a folk-rocker like Alannis Morissette or Fionna Apple or someone. But she doesn't really do rock or dance pop very well. She has this amazing voice when she lets her voice crack and warble to reach notes she can't in her normal range, but her normal range is flat, boring, shaky, and too pretty. I don't know why she just doesn't sing most of a song in that incredible fifth gear of hers... except, I guess, maybe it's impossible. Mig seems like he's trying out to replace David Cassidy in the Partridge Family band. He's a professional and has a good voice, but his instincts tend towards syrupy ballads and boy-band crap. I was rooting for him a while ago, but he continues descending into a spiral of over-cute Leif Garret emoting and Vegas crapitude. Marty pretty much locked the whole contest tonight. He's not exactly right for the band, but his mix of Kurt Cobain, Mick Jagger, Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious is interesting. And his song "Trees" certainly seems catchy enough to be top ten hit. And on the original songs... Did no one but Marty realize that they were trying out for INXS and therefore should sing a song that INXS could actually put on a record? Mig and Suzie did sappy adult-contempory ballads, and Jordis channelled Lenny Kravitz. Only Marty did something that seemed like it could be on an INXS album. (Well, JD did too, but that song was just a reworking of an actual INXS song they had him write lyrics to a couple of weeks ago... does that count as an "original" song? Why didn't he just write new lyrics to New Sensation and call that his original song?) posted by Ace at 08:40 PM
CommentsMarty kicks ass. I love his punk edge. So the question is would he better off not winning and doing his own thing. Posted by: Chickpea on September 7, 2005 12:46 AM
You have to be kidding me. Marty is horrible. He's living in the past, the early to mid 1990s. He is often flat and just way creepy. Jordis is great, however, not for INXS. Susie could be the next top Country Alternative Pop Rock sensation. Mig could be the guy, one cannot levy a valid argument against him. The winner, hands down, is JD. JD has rock star written all over him. Rock stars are cocky, you have to be cocky to be a rock star. JD is the only true fan of the band in the contest. JD's voice, as Dave Navarro pointed out a couple weeks ago, fits the bands back catalog perfectly. His song tonight was as original as Susie's or Mig's. Susie wrote hers with Marty while Mig wrote his with two blokes before he came. And, one would do well to remember that JD's INXS song, and this is a contest to be in INXS, was the most well received by Navarro and the band. Posted by: AKA Lynnie on September 7, 2005 02:21 AM
I'm not a JD fan, but his INXS song tonight kicked ass. Kicked. Ass. Definitely the best performance of an INXS song so far on the show (everyone else just tries to mimc Hutchence), his best performance, and one of the best performances of the show. The original songs from everyone from Marty SUCKED! Marty's wasn't really that good, but it was the only one that was even remotely like something INXS would do. Quote of the night from Dave Navarro (talking to Suzie about her song): "But then I remembered you said it was about being true to yourself, which I totally support." I'd love to hang out with Dave Navarro for a few hours. He's a maverick. Posted by: John from WuzzaDem on September 7, 2005 03:56 AM
I can see the point about JD being "cocky" and all that, but he has been over the edge a number of times with the band. I think his failure in last week's studio session disqualified him in the eyes of the band. He would have been gone last week except getting rid of Ty clearly was a higher priority. The band is clearly looking at the vocal talents of the singers, but I think a bigger part of what they are looking at is how they will fit with the band. i.e. "we gotta live with this guy/gal for an entire tour and bunches of recording sessions before we can dump them". I think JD is gone tonight, unless Jordis blows yet another song. Posted by: Sinner on September 7, 2005 08:36 AM
Geez. Mrs. Azlib. is stuck on this show too. I don't get it at all. We're well into our middle ages, and even in our best days, were never rock-n-rollers, and certainly never all gaa-gaa for INXS. Whatever. There could be worse things to do with an evening. Posted by: azlibertarian on September 7, 2005 09:17 AM
Agree with you about Jordis. She's brilliant in patches, but can't seem to sustain it. During WATC I wanted to go, "There! There! That's good! Keep doing that!" but before I could get the message out (through my tinfoil hat) she'd already staked her claim in Blandsville. Totally disagree about Marty. His singing has a strained, constipated quality, and his stage moves are so wooden they'd make Al Gore wince. As for his song "Trees," that was the gayest thing of all time. Just thinking about it is making my balls shrink. Posted by: ted on September 7, 2005 10:39 AM
Nonsense. Trees was funny and silly. Was the Kinks' I'm an Ape-Man gay too? Same basic idea behind the lyrics. And it was very pop and and all, but I think his metal/grunge singing style keeps it half out of the pop bin. As for Marty being too "early to mid-nineties" --
And if you want to talk about retro, let's talk about JD's mix of Elivis impersonated by Morrissey. Except both Elvis and Morrissey could actually, you know, sing more than three notes. Posted by: ace on September 7, 2005 11:03 AM
"But then I remembered you said it was about being true to yourself, which I totally support." I'd love to hang out with Dave Navarro for a few hours. He's a maverick. Heh. He's the hard rock Paula Abdul. Now, I like him. He's a nice guy, even if a little too painfully nice a guy. Oddly, though, he's mean on occasion. Everything he said about Jordis was true-- yes, she has two voices, one spectacular and one lame, shaky, and often off-key, and it's a mystery why she spends so much time in the latter. But he could note that JD, for example, has one voice, which is always lame, shaky, and off-key, and that he only re-arranges songs to limit the range he'll be required to sing... and even this transparent deception can't wholly hide the inadequacy of his range. He could also have noted that Mig definitely wrong-footed it with a transparent and somewhat nasty attempt to ride the corpse of Michael Hutchence to victory. Singing a song about a dead friend? Not appropriate, Mig. It's not that it's offensive per se; I'm sure the guys have gotten past MH's death. It's that it was so obviously a gimmick designed to "really connect" with INXS. I liked how Mig explained how that syrupy boy-band ballad had anything to do with INXS. "Well," he said, "it's that they lost a friend, and I lost a friend, and now we're moving on." To which Navarro could only reply: "Yes, I got that." If he'd been being more honest, he might have said, "Yes, everyone got 'the message' of your song, as you wrote it in day-glo pink paint on the buisness end of a sledgehammer and bludgeoned the band and America to death with it."
Posted by: ace on September 7, 2005 11:12 AM
WTF did I say??? I guess that's what I get for trying to have an IM conversation and write a comment at the same time. What I meant to say is that JD's original song kicked ass (as did his performance), and that, of the others, Marty's was the only one that sounded even remotely like a song INXS would do. He's the hard rock Paula Abdul. Now, I like him. He's a nice guy, even if a little too painfully nice a guy. Paula Abdul. Indeed. I like it when he gives one of the contestants a long lecture, then one of the band members basically contradicts him. Posted by: John from WuzzaDem on September 7, 2005 04:03 PM
I think that JD is by far the most likely to engage in autoerotic asphyxiation, which should, you know, make him a lock. Posted by: Hondo on September 7, 2005 04:06 PM
I can't take Marty seriously. He looks like a blond version of Justin Long who played Warren Cheswick on "Ed." He even moves his mouth the same way. When you add that to the fact that I seriously worry about him murdering members of the audience and stashing their bodies in the attic, I just can't like him. Posted by: Steve L. on September 7, 2005 04:42 PM
I tihk Steve L knows a bit too much about Warren Cheswick. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Posted by: John from WuzzaDem on September 7, 2005 06:23 PM

There's only one man who can lead INXS. Posted by: Slublog on September 7, 2005 10:35 PM
The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog and then stole his snausages Man, that was one painful elimination episode. I feel like suing INXS for screwing up that poor girl's head. She stunk. Posted by: ted on September 7, 2005 10:55 PM
The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog and then stole his snausages. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. A lot of this is confidence and they've done nothing but build suzie up for three weeks and tear Jordis down for the same period. I don't think she was right for our band, INXS, but they just kept laying into her when other people (like, uhhh, JD) got no criticism at all. I was surpised that JD actually managed to do a decent job of Mystify, but that sort of lounge-y song is tailor made for his talents, such as they are. Posted by: ace on September 7, 2005 11:06 PM

Sometimes I read comment threads on this site, and a kind of feel ashamed of myself. Posted by: Michael on September 7, 2005 11:41 PM
Our Band is pretty useless when it comes to criticism. One week they're bashing Marty for being too "manic," the next it was all just a "test." Or when the band praises JD, it's usually in a way that disses the other contestants. Like Jon will say, "JD, you're the only one who seems to know what he's doing up there" [cut to: smoldering contestants]. Useless. One thing that's surprised me is how amenable INXS are to overt ass-kissing. I don't think JD would have made it half this far but for that. Posted by: ted on September 7, 2005 11:42 PM
the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. JD's ass kissing is horrible. It's so over the top and obvious. And how does he maintain his image as cool, confident rocker when every week he's basically letting Kirk know he'll fellate him before shows to relax him? Posted by: ace on September 7, 2005 11:53 PM
It sort of bothers me that the one person on the show with an instinctive aversion to the phony baloney "show biz" stuff -- Jordis -- got ridden out of town on a rail. Wasn't that the sort of attitude people wanted in their rock stars at one point? I've never been big on the whole "selling out" thing, but dammit if they aren't making me reconsider. The "fashion workshops," the Levi's photoshoot... man, it doesn't get any phonier than that. Posted by: ted on September 8, 2005 12:38 AM
the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog...Oh, wait, I'm on the west coast. JD's ass kissing is horrible. It's so over the top and obvious. I was waiting for him to work in something about "world peace." Is anyone else expecting Mig to break out a show tune next week? Just sayin'. Posted by: John from WuzzaDem on September 8, 2005 01:55 AM
And just for the record, Marty's song blew. Posted by: John from WuzzaDem on September 8, 2005 01:56 AM
I don't see how any of the people left would work in INXS. None of them exude the right feeling as far as I am concerned. The only one that can sing is Suzie, but I can't see them fronting their band with a woman. Marty is slightly unhinged. Mig is, well, strange at times. JD is just awful, but I guess he has that look that keeps the girls voting for him. Posted by: Steve L. on September 8, 2005 08:14 AM
Has anyone gotten the feeling that the band might be saying, "oh shit NONE of these people fit"? That being said, Mig is Australian. Mig is working with Brian May from Queen on some new stuff apart from his We Will Rock You stage show. Mig seems to have some sort of connection with the band- His ass kissing and "elimination fear" seems to be a little forced. Marty is a mess. JD is an ass. Suzie is a woman (sorry, I think that's enough to get her kicked off. Would the Beatles hire a woman to replace Lennon? Would TLC hire a man?) Mig is the man. I think Mig's Australian-ness is a huge help. Remember, they may not "make it" in America this time around, but they can always, always tour Australia, and having a home boy fronting the band can't hurt. Posted by: Andy the Squirrel on September 8, 2005 08:39 AM
Also- I can see JD, clearly, causing problems based on his behavior. He's the kind of guy who works hard until he "makes it", but then you realize the hard work was a big show, and now that he's there he's going to coast. Marty I can see calling a "group meeting" with the band to discuss with them why he's too upset to play this week, because "I feel I need to explore my rock/ballad/whatever side and you guys just want me to sing "Disappear" every night", or being too upset to go on tour because of the earthquake in Somalia, or too devastated that his cat is constipated..... You get the idea. Posted by: Andy the Squirrel on September 8, 2005 08:42 AM
ted, DUDE, did you have the sound turned down or something? Jordis STUNK UP THE JOINT. It was the worst reality TV Talent Show performance since William Hung and only better than that by a small margin. Getting ridden out of town on a rail was the kindest thing they could have done. Posted by: Sinner on September 8, 2005 08:51 AM
...but then you realize the hard work was a big show, and now that he's there he's going to coast. Yeah, I get that vibe from him too. I can also see him being a real pain in the ass once he no longer feels obligated to kiss their collective ass. And, frankly, I wouldn't blame him. INXS deserves what they get if they're going to reward brazen ass-kissing. Posted by: ted on September 8, 2005 09:00 AM
Sinner, did you lose your bifocals? I said she stunk. Posted by: ted on September 8, 2005 09:03 AM
My thoughts on the show: Posted by: John on September 8, 2005 11:44 AM
Mig did a great job on YMCA. He was very believable as the constriction worker. JD deserved to win. His voice fits the band the best. As far as Marty, he got the better end of the deal. He gets to open for the band, do his own material, and get mass exposure. When JD is choking back his vomit from having to perform "You're One of My Kind" for the thousandth time, Marty will be grinning. For shizzle. Posted by: jimmy on September 21, 2005 01:31 PM
