Europe To Tap Oil/Gas Reserves To Aid USA hell of a gesture, and appreciated: Europe will dip into its emergency reserves of gasoline to help the United States through an energy crisis that began when Hurricane Katrina smashed into Gulf coast refiners, EU governments said on Friday. I don't know what he means by "bid," either. Either way, it's his actions that count. Gas Spikes Over $3, With Shortages In Midwest And On East Coast: It's Mad Max Days lately -- many gas stations just don't have any guzzoline. Very bad for the economy. Europe is acting both generously and enlightenedly self-interested in trying to reduce the shortages. But let's focus on the "generous" part. posted by Ace at 01:16 PM

I paid $3.18 this morning. There are two stations across the street from each other a mile down the road. On has it for $3.67 and the other for $3.09 (so who's buying from the expensive guy?). I asked where I gassed up, and he said supplies were okay. This is Boston. Posted by: S. Weasel on September 2, 2005 01:29 PM

Question. Is euro petro refined to be used in US autos? This was the first thing I thought of when I heard this. If so, sounds great. Posted by: rls on September 2, 2005 02:06 PM
You still have to get the gas to the distro centers. Gas comes by pipeline from the refineries that are offline. Is there a pipeline network that would allow gas to get from an east coast port to the midwest? If not, there's no way imho loaded semis could possibly fill the gap. Only three of the LA refineries are located in the immediate hurricane area. Of those, only one that I know of (the Chalmette, LA one) is in a flooded area and it's a relatively smaller one. I think the problem is 2-fold: (1) getting crude to the refineries (usually by pipeline from the Gulf or deep water port) due to broken or flooded pipelines and (2) housing and infrastructure for the workers. Even if ships loaded with gas set sail today, it would still be many days before it showed up in the distro channels here. Europe has a vested interest in making sure the US economy doesn't sink since there's will as well, if that should come to pass. Posted by: Laddy on September 2, 2005 02:49 PM
I don't care if it's self-interested. Sounds great to me. (Btw, I don't drive myself, but living in NYC, I know that getting stuff here involves a lot of driving and shipping.) Posted by: meep on September 2, 2005 03:04 PM

The refinery in Chalmette is the only one I know of in flood waters. The big ConocoPhilips refinery is in Belle Chasse so I assume it should be alright. The Murphy refinery is in Meraux which I also believe is high and dry. The westbank didn't get hit too hard with wind or flooding which is a miracle since their levee system is even lower than NO's. Weasel, I filled up in Uxbridge, MA last night for $2.89. The station manager said supplies were close to full for him. Posted by: Rocketeer on September 2, 2005 03:34 PM
I live in Oregon, and they are saying our supplies are threatened out here too, but I can't imagine how, since our crude comes from Alaska and is refined on the west coast. I paid $2.99 last night (a .50 spike in one day), but they say it will go higher this weekend. PS, I still question the timing. Posted by: Scot on September 2, 2005 03:46 PM
That's nice of Spain and Germany. Gracias! Danke! Posted by: SJKevin on September 2, 2005 03:47 PM
I live in Oregon, and they are saying our supplies are threatened out here too, but I can't imagine how Rove's super ultra double probation secret area 51 project has been building MatTrans gear will be used to beam the gas to the areas with highest prices. The Teamsters are naturally very upset about this development and are threatening to whine. Posted by: Tony on September 2, 2005 04:39 PM
This wouldn't have anything to do with the upcoming elections in Germany, would it? Posted by: apotheosis on September 2, 2005 08:19 PM

Maybe they're selling it to us for twice what they paid? But hell, maybe they're just being nice to us. There's a first time for everything. Posted by: GORDON on September 2, 2005 08:55 PM
Here in the south (Fla panhandle), gas runs betweens 2.76 and 3.19 per gallon. So far. Posted by: rabidfox on September 2, 2005 09:04 PM
Some areas are experiencing local shortages because frightened people are buying a lot more than what they normally use. Its like a run on a bank. Ending up in a sort of strategic fuel reserve, but in people's gas tanks, and in cans in their garages. Posted by: lauraw on September 2, 2005 09:30 PM
"Some areas are experiencing local shortages because frightened people are buying a lot more than what they normally use" Yeahp. Saw a guy with about 20 gas cans in the back of his pickup filling them all up today! Posted by: BrewFan on September 2, 2005 10:08 PM
Strange doings in Reutersville. The first sentence says "emergency reserves of gasoline", then the last sentence says "two million barrels per day of oil to be shipped ." I didn't know that the refining process could be reversed, nor that tankers were equipped with this amazing technology. Seems like a bad idea, considering that our refineries are maxed out. Or is it possible that Reuters doesn't know the difference between crude oil and gas? That would explain some of their reporting ( and here I thought it was just their bias). Posted by: quiggs on September 2, 2005 10:08 PM
The really effective thing about this is that they are sending over refined gasoline rather than crude. If they are sending two million bpd of unleaded that is going to make a hell of a good difference for our economy. What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals. The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite. Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
