Third Source Says Able Danger ID'd AttaThird time's a charm. Confirms there was a chart with Atta's name and picture on it. And some interesting news about why Able Danger was ended -- because back in 2000, while she was still Provost at Stanford, their data-mining techinques pinpointed Condoleeza Rice as a potential spy for the Chinese government. Okay-- sure, that's surely a miss, and that would make the Clinton Administration less likely to trust other AD findings. But data-mining has never promised a perfect accuracy rate -- it's a tool, and largely a mathematical one, and it always has to be checked against common sense and human understanding. Still, the claim is that AD was disbanded because the Rice incident convinced officials at the time that what they were doing was close to "spying" on Americans. They weren't-- they were analyzing publicly-available information, and they should not have been disbanded. posted by Ace at 12:11 PM
CommentsIf we start calling her "Commie Rice" will the lefties all of a sudden become pro-war? Posted by: Jack M. on August 27, 2005 12:42 PM
With the exception of Bush Condi Rice is my favorite person in this administration. That being said, how do we really know she was not a spy for China? China seems to have its hands in everything these days. Besides, I am sure we have high-ranking Chinese officials on our payroll. Posted by: the daily missive on August 27, 2005 02:13 PM
Ace-- so, what you're telling me is that Dr. Rice. . . is Yuri? Huh. I hope Rice runs for president as (R-Manchuria). Cheers, Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on August 27, 2005 05:01 PM
Able Danger documents on Chinese espionage would be fascinating, if they still exist. I'm not surprised that the project turned up something that caused the Clintons to shut them down. Rice's name is irrelevant. The names Moktar and James Riady spring to mind, as well as Charlie Trie, Johnny Chung, and many more. As soon as their names reached the National Security Advisor - former lobbyist for the People's Republic, Samuel Berger - alarm bells would have gone off. Posted by: lyle on August 27, 2005 06:03 PM
It's unlikely they would have missed John Huang. Posted by: lyle on August 27, 2005 06:05 PM
This is going to go somewhere....and not dwon the flusher. Too much sunlight on AD now, it's got to grow. I am waiting for the rest of the team to come forward and for somebody to uncover the collected data that is stored somewhere. There might be a need for a party at the National Archives. sshhhhh--This just in--Osama Bin Laden has been tracked down by able danger hiding in Great Britain in the guise of MADONNA. Now this is where it gets interesting. You see we've found (through interfacing our advanced geek network and amazingly advanced software programming and unbelievably critically advanced computers and all the information ever produced anywhere in the galaxy) that OBL is actually a woman impersonating a man impersonating a woman impersonating a man impersonating a woman. Obviously Madonna will deny being OBL so we'll have to act quickly. SO don't let anyone else know!!! Posted by: john on August 27, 2005 08:08 PM
potential. potential spy. that's not wrong, that's right. everybody is a potential spy. it's just that we don't care if the garbage man spies. "Sources said the private contractors, using sophisticated computer software that sifts through massive amounts of raw data to establish patterns, came up with a chart of Chinese strategic and business connections in the U.S. "The program wrongly tagged Rice, who at the time was an adviser to then-candidate George W. Bush, and former Defense Secretary William Perry by linking their associations at Stanford, along with their contacts with Chinese leaders, sources said." i don't understand the problem. they weren't wrongly tagged, they were rightly tagged. they were in positions with access to sensitive info, and they had contacts with the chinese. i'd want my first-approximation-compile-a-list-for-further-review computer program to tag them as POTENTIAL spies. Posted by: jb on August 27, 2005 08:34 PM
Frankly, practically everyone with the sort of contacts, degrees, and expert ability you need at that level could be tagged as a possible spy. I'm completely unsurprised that a data-mining program tagged Dr Rice; any program of that kind would tag most of the people I know. That's why we have background investigations. Just 'cause Clinton "sold" our most advance missle stuff to China - after transferring the responsibility out of the State Department (where it would have been stopped) - is that any reason to criticize the Clinton administration? The fact that there were several representatives of Chinese Generals running about Washington with lots of cash in brown paper bags has nothing whatsoever to do with it. Speaking of bags of cash, I'm sure that the Able Danger lost documents were destroyed in routine records handling, just like the UN. Anyone who casts a suspicious slant to these events is obviously a member of the vast right-wing conspiracy. Posted by: robert on August 28, 2005 06:19 AM

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals. The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite. Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
