All Grieving Parents Are Equal, But Some Are More Equal Than Others

No MSM coverage for those who believe their sons and daughters died for a noble purpose.

On some idiotic left-wing blog, by the way, I was called dangerous (thank you!). In the course of defending Saint Cindy, Our Lady of Perpetual Tanning, he noted that what makes Cindy courageous, among other things, was her bravery in dealing with the heat of Texas, day in, day out.

Indeed, that does make her a hero.

You know who else is a hero, by that definition?

The entire state of Texas.

It's official: Don't mess with Texas. It's a state in which the mere act of moving from home to work to the local 7/11 for a cola-flavored Slurpee qualifies you as heroic.

BTW, NYC has been pretty hot lately. But don't call me a "hero."

(Heroes are supposed to say that sort of thing.)

She sleeps in an air-conditioned hotel. I'm sure when she needs a nap, she can run back there and lay down. And, it's no hotter than Vacaville this time of year, anyway.

But, I do agree ace is dangerous! In that dangerous bad boy sort of way. ;-)

Can you be heroic if it's real cold too? I'd hate to think that us Minnesotans would get left out of all the opportunities for heroism. Paul Wellstone was heroic, but that's just cause he was short and road a special bus.

I guess these geniuses in the media don't read the weather reports for Baghdad. Try 118 in the shade while being shot at. Our soldiers are brave. And there's not a one using a protest sign for a parasol.

I'm just an ordinary average Texan, doing my job like everybody else.

Bitching about the weather, as usual.

Did you read Hitch (the funny one, not the Will Smith one) on Sheehan?

Sharp. Particularly appreciated his turn of the phrase, "I think one must deny to anyone the right to ventriloquize the dead. "

I guess it's true: drinking *does* make one smarter.

Cheers,

I must be a goddamn goddess. I live in Florida and I don't own the car, so in 100+ degree heat indexes I get to walk to and from work every day. Of course, my job and my apartment have a/c, but the other day I actually sat on the patio for an hour and read a book. In the afternoon. Anyone want a lock of my hair to frame and hang on the wall?

Posted by: Andrea Harris on August 15, 2005 06:06 PM

$5 says Cindy will be stung by a scorpion during her stint.

Bush will, somehow, be responsible for this turn of events.

Posted by: BumperStickerist on August 15, 2005 06:06 PM

Cindy should move to Las Vegas to protest. Not that I want to draw anyone's attention to my own heroic status, of course. I just take the heat in stride. ("In stride" is code language for "sitting in my air-conditioned office all day.")

Posted by: Sobek on August 15, 2005 06:08 PM

Andrea Harris asked:

"Anyone want a lock of my hair to frame and hang on the wall?"

Just don't ask that question over on the Budget post. There are probably too many people there who would respond with an overwhelming "yes."

Posted by: Sobek on August 15, 2005 06:11 PM

I guess it's true: drinking *does* make one smarter.

Then I'm a freaking genius! And I lived in TX for 6 mos, which makes me a heroic genius!

Gotchya beat, Andrea.

Asked on camera a few minutes ago why she deserved a second meeting with President Bush, Sheehan drew praise from the media whores for her deft handling of the difficult question:

"That question has been asked and answered so many times... you can look up my answer in print articles."

You see, she's just too busy blogging with Michael Moore to elaborate further.

Sounds just like Hillary.

Posted by: capitano on August 15, 2005 06:18 PM

Sidestep!

Very media saavy that Mrs. Sheehan is.

Posted by: Steve on August 15, 2005 06:33 PM

And to think I have been a hero all these years.

Guess ya'll heard Sheehan's husband filed for divorce Friday. It's at smoking gun.

Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on August 15, 2005 06:37 PM

I feel really awful for this woman. She is in a very vulnerable emotional state, and the leftists who support her son's murderers are exploiting her shamelessly. No, I don't excuse what she's doing. But I cut her personally a huge amount of slack right now. I cut no slack for the media and leftists who are doing so much damage to this family, though. This is a horrible thing to behold. They really will do pretty much anything if they think it'll help them win, won't they?

Posted by: SJKevin on August 15, 2005 06:46 PM

Oh, she's had plenty of slack cut already. Enough is enough.

And when she says, I want to ask why my son was killed, blah blah blah, Bush should quote her:

"That question has been asked and answered so many times... you can look up my answer in print articles."

Posted by: on August 15, 2005 06:58 PM

Thank you, thank you. All in a days work though, I haven't done anything that any other great person wouldn't have done when faced with these same challenges. Also do you know where I can get my hero medal for braving the wilds of Austin traffic?

The late, lamented MIGHT magazine, published by Dave Eggers in the mid-90s, was often hilarious and highly insightful.

It made an observation about Michael Moore way back then, in an article all about what a clueless simp he is, which was not only spot-on, but is fully applicable to Saint Cindy: the article noted that his career was based on the proposition that "there's no such thing as a stupid question if you can make a big deal out of trying to ask it."

It then illustrated this point by going to Moore's condo building in NYC, wearing a gorilla suit, and trying to get an interview with him.

That article was so good, I even forgive MIGHT magazine for giving Ted Rall his start.

Some interesting info on Sheehan. She blames the rift in her marriage on Bush. Earlier, she said it was b/c her husband disapproved of her anti-war activities. And though Sheehan says the msm is only a propganda tool (ha!), AP has done some heavy editing for her benefit.

Posted by: UGAdawg on August 15, 2005 07:31 PM

I'M A HERO...I barely live through the August heat here in Texas. Let me list some of my personal acts of heroism:

1. I actually have to put my OWN gas in the tank, as there are hardly anymore full service gas stations in Texas (I am pretty sure Rove is responsible for this)

2. At lunch time, not only do I have to walk outside in the heat but I have to get in my car, which is HOT and HUMID, and drive to lunch - can anyone say SAUNA?

3. We can't wear bikini's to work in Texas - so I have be fully clothed everyday and unnecessarily suffer. (I think Rove is behind this as well).

There are many more examples, but as you can see....I am not just your everyday hero - I am an EXTRA SPECIAL hero. and I think everyone on Ace of Spaces should recognize my sacrifices and worship my greatness.

By the way, Ace, in some parts of Texas, 7 Eleven does not exist. Back in the 80's some mothers against porn got together, protest 7/11 selling porn and ran them out of town. After all, this is the bible belt.

Posted by: Michael on August 15, 2005 07:35 PM

I'm sure the good folks in Crawford as well as the rest of us Texans would like for Cindy to take her pale white ass back to where she came from.

Justification for my SuperHero status:

We have other "markers" of victims as heroes, and the Right is as guilty as the Left in the apotheosis of victim-heroes or heroes by class.

1. Anyone who surrenders to the enemy and becomes a POW is automatically a hero. In prestige, the media puts a POW below a Medal of Honor winner, but above a Silver Star winner.

2. Vegetative people and their manipulative, deceitful, and possibly religiously deranged relatives become heroes.

3. After 9/11, anyone who was a government employee and wore a uniform became a hero. Even Postal Employees? Yes! They are on the Front Lines of Defense Against Evildoers.

4. One week the "Noble Purple-finger stained" Iraqis are a nation of Heroes. The next week as they go back to killing the Americans they hate or just sitting by indifferently, they return to being a nation of Shitheads.

5. As opposed to Cindy Sheehan, any mother that loses a photogenic white girl and who rages away for months on Fox is a hero.

We have f*cked Cindy Sheehan. We have f*cked that bereaved, grieving, heroic woman. And I feel much better.

Posted by: Kralizec on August 15, 2005 10:44 PM

I agreee that Cindy Sheehan deserves respect in that her son died - but he made his own decisions, died a soldier, and will be laid to rest with honor and dignity in the military tradition. Unfortunately, every minute her pointless, selfish activism is amplified by the media and bandied about the blogosphere, her son's sacrifice loses some of that dignity, and that's truly sad. And yes, I'm aware of the irony of offering an opinion of her on a blog, so don't bother pointing it out. (sideshow bob reference!)

BTW, I've been in Houston more than a few times in the summer...ugh. That ain't no dry heat! On one memorable occasion up in the Woodlands, it was 99 in both temp and humidity. No wonder it's the A/C capitol of the world!

Posted by: model_1066 on August 15, 2005 10:51 PM

Kralizec: don't get any on you.

Cedarfool: funny, I turned on Fox news a few minutes ago and there was that Hannity jerk babbling about Saint Cindy. Something about not "suppressing her speech" -- I guess there was a lone corner of America which wasn't filled with her squinched-up, sobbing mug.

Posted by: Andrea Harris on August 15, 2005 10:55 PM

Sheehan is now giving various reasons why she's been forced to sleep in an air-conditioned tent:

Reason One - Personal Safety
"By the way, in case I forgot to blog it last night, the Sheriff has requested that I stay down in Crawford during the night, because he is afraid for my safety after he leaves. He said he would "sleep better" himself at night if I came into town to sleep. Judging from the shooting guns, I guess he was right."

Reason Two - Fire Ants
"My day started way too early today. After 3 hours of sleep, I was being shaken awake by someone at 6:30 a.m. telling me that the Today show wanted me to be on. I had come into town to sleep in a trailer because my tent had been infested with fire ants."

If you have a strong stomach, go try to read the woman's rambling, self-important blog entries at HuffPo.

That is a woman who's really started letting the good press go to her head.

Posted by: Slublog on August 15, 2005 10:59 PM

"Cedarford:Good stuff, but you neglected to say something about the Zionists. However, the Natalee reference almost makes up for your oversight."

Michael,

Is that really you? Have you abandoned your enabling behaviors as regards the Official Asshat of the Ace of Spades Headquarters? Oh, if only it were true! What joy would fill my soul!

Posted by: BrewFan on August 15, 2005 11:00 PM

Cedarford is another of those who think that turnabout is not only fair play, but a telling blow. Refutation seems to be a kind of verbal punishment, but from that, people seem to draw the conclusion that any sort of verbal punishment amounts to a refutation. Yet, to come back to the present case, no matter how many instances one finds in which someone on the right has exaggerated someone's heroism, the notion of Cindy Sheehan's heroism stands or falls on its own. If she's not a heroine, someone else's lack of heroism doesn't make her any more heroic.

Posted by: Kynes on August 15, 2005 11:12 PM

Umm, wonder if this will turn into some weird Munchausen By Proxy syndrome and once the limelight disappears, she'll be forcing her other kids to join the army and at night, secretly give the insurgents their location.

Since she has sworn to follow Bush wherever he goes, he should go on a quick 50 state tour and then we can see who starts buying plane tickets for Sheehan.

Seriously though, Hugh Hewitt referenced a new Newsweek article about Bush meeting with families of deceased troops in private. What I found interesting is motives.

Why does Bush meet them in private and Sheehan wants to meet Bush in public in front of press and all? Smells like agenda....

Posted by: Ring on August 15, 2005 11:28 PM

If the wants to follow the prez, then he should schedula a trip to Iraq....

Posted by: on August 16, 2005 12:00 AM

Model 1066 - I agreee that Cindy Sheehan deserves respect in that her son died

Maybe Sheehan deserves solicitude or sympathy, but respect? What if she was a crackhead in prison who "lost a son" in Iraq? How is that tied to additionally respecting the crackhead?

Andrea Harris - Sean Hannity is one of the worst on the Right for hawking "heroes" that agree with his political philosophy. As bad as the Lefties that worship Rachel Corrie as a Hero rather than a Darwin Award winner.

Slublog - Hilarious behind the scenes on the Suffering Mother Savior of All Soldiers. Thanks.

Both the Left and the Right fail to distinguish between the media whores like Sheehan, Breitweiser, the "hero class system" (ie all soldiers, cops, mothers of children with Downs, victims of trainwrecks or terrorism) being heroes - and real heroes.

Examples:

Firefighter demanding a contribution for his "brother heroes" because they run into buildings while mere civilians flee in fear -Hero? No, just a guy who took a job with risk to it, much less risk than professions like ironworkers, lumberjacking, truck driving.

Woman who stops at accident scene and pulls kid from burning car. Hero? Yep.

Woman who is walking backwards across the country to raise attention to and cure muscular dystrophy. Hero? No. Attention-seeking Media Whore.

Day 10 at Camp Casey
I was awoken rudely this morning by the sound of a shotgun firing. The neighbor across the road is a vicious right-winger who thinks he can intimidate us with his own personal war-toy. I stepped outside of my tent with the intent of holding a dialogue with him about Casey, my beautiful infant boy, when I was distracted by the sunrise.

A sunrise is a gift, but it's not something we should take for granted. After all, the 18 billion people killed by the reckless policies of the Bush regime will never see another sunrise, because they're dead. Sometimes it makes me so angry that I want to scream at the sky, but remember the television cameras nearby and my place in history.

Our crusade is just. In all of the confusion and busy schedules (yesterday, Oliver Stone stopped by!!!) it's easy to forget just what we're here to do. Sometimes, the heat of this awful place is stifling and disheartening, but then I think of our cause - the need to stop George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld from working with a cabal of Zionist interlopers to take control of the oil fields in Iraq and enrich themselves with the blood of our soldiers.

Soldiers like my Casey, who just learned to ride a bike before he left for war.

The president still refuses to meet with me, though. I just don't understand. The Crawford Peace House representatives say it's because his aides are telling him not to. I know differently. He refuses to meet with me because he's a coward who's afraid of the righteous fire from my grieving eyes.

But anger is not what I should be focusing on right now. It's all about the cause. We need to pull all of our troops out of Iraq and give them back their country instead of handing it over to Bush's friends in Israel.

And we need to protect the poor delicate boys forced to fight from the evil manipulations of their government. It will be a long struggle, but we'll be here until I get my chance to meet with the president.

Again, that is.

Now I'm off to press row. Oprah wants 15 minutes.

Our Lady of Perpetual Tanning

Too rich! New poster. I was in TX in July and didn't get to go inside while touring places like the Alamo except for a couple of minutes. I felt like I was in an oven cooking for someone's supper! Does that qualify me? Oh, and I live in S.C. where it's pretty hot too, but somehow I manage to stay inside on bad days. Maybe we'll get lucky and a rattler will reach up and bite her in the butt while she's scooched down taking a pee.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on August 16, 2005 10:33 AM

little bastards sting like hell.

When my dad was stationed at Kingsville NAS, we lived in Bishop, TX. One of the first times I mowed our lawn, I didn't notice that I ran over a smaller fire ant mound. Of course, when you use a push mower, you're behind the mower.

Which meant that a few seconds after running over the mound, I stepped into the angry ants that once inhabited it.

I got bit a lot that day. Had to take the hose to my leg to get the damn things off.

Day 11 at Camp Casey
The meeting with Oliver Stone went well. He wants to make a movie about our struggle against the injustices of the Bush administration. The hardest part, he said, will be finding an actor to play Casey. I'm thinking the young actor from the Sixth Sense would work, as he has the beatific innocence needed to portray my victimized son.

I didn't sleep well last night. I couldn't sleep in the ditch, because the sheriff is afraid the brownshirts protesting our vigil here will kidnap me during the night, or worse. Don't let the media fool you, though. There are only 3 anti-peace protestors out there, and at least one of them is just some guy from town who always shows up at these things with a camera.

Media row was great as always today. Oprah is so nice! I hope I can meet her in person someday, but she has this thing about coming to Texas. She might send Dr. Phil, which would be neat, but just not the same.

Maybe Dr. Phil could explain why George Bush and his cronies feel such an overwhelming need to choose war over peace, to choose fighting over talking. We're waging nuclear war over there, contaminating the whole country. You can't hug children with nuclear arms, you know.

Of course, some of us can't hug our children any more at all, because they've been murdered by the criminally pro-Israel policies of the Bush-Rumsfeld war machine. Poor sweet Casey - right before he left for war, as he lay sleeping in his crib, I simply watched him sleep in peace.

Peace.

If only the Bush administration believed in it.

Posted by: Cindy Sheehan on August 16, 2005 11:45 AM

Day 12 at Camp Casey
We've been out here for what seems like forever, and the murderer-in-chief still refuses to meet with me. A few of us caught a glimpse of him yesterday as his fossil-fuel wasting motorcade sped by us. For a few moments, we thought he was coming out to meet with us, but those hopes were quickly shattered as we wiped Texas dust from our faces after the cars went by.

I don't understand. He couldn't have missed us, with our signs and our shouts and most of all, our firm conviction in the rightness of our cause. We have no doubt, we have no fear, we will not back down in this crusade for justice.

The Crawford Peace House guys say I should stop using the word "crusade" to describe this venture, but I can't help it. Is there a better word to describe the nobility and the near-religious sense of purpose all of us gathered here in the Texas sun have?

Speaking of Texas, that guy next door continues his intimidation campaign against us. The PETA guys don't want us to release the peace doves now. They're afraid this nut will start blasting them out of the sky.

If that happens, could there be a better illustration of how war destroys innocence? Still, the sound of the gun is unsettling, like the phony war we now find ourselves engaged in.

I hear that some of Bush's supporters on the internet are beginning to doubt my ability to complete this mission. They are wrong, and I will stay here as long as it takes for Bush to meet with me.

For Casey.

For love.

For peace.

Posted by: Cindy Sheehan on August 16, 2005 01:23 PM

Cindy, you can let the PETA guys know that the peace doves will be safe until September 1.

After that, me and the pesky neighbor are going to be blasting away.

Actually, it's cracking me up just to think that if they're still there, they're gonna think a war started all around them. Texas countryside is a little noisy on opening weekend of dove season.

Day 13 at Camp Casey
Folk lore and superstition say that thirteen is an unlucky number. So far, today has proven that wrong. We've had a great day here at Camp Casey, in between all of the mourning, that is.

The media attention has been wonderful, but also something of a pain. I mean, the other day someone told a great anti-Bush joke involving a camel and an oil rig. It was so funny, even some of the super-serious Crawford Peace House guys were smiling. But we had to make sure we were behind a grove of trees when we laughed, lest some camera catch our mirth and make it look as though serious work isn't going on here.

Because, despite the moments of levity, there is much to be concerned about. We at Camp Casey are concerned about the young men being sent off to die or end up maimed by the very weapons we sold Saddam in the 80s.

We're concerned about the Zionists and their influence on the Bush regime.

We're concerned that Israel refuses to get out of Palestine, thus making America more unpopular in the world. Just look at the German Chancellor, who has reservations about our imminent attack on Iran.

Most of all, we're concerned about being seen as just a carnival sideshow beside a Texas road. This is a vigil, and a serious one. Some guys on stilts tried to join us the other day, but we turned them away. We have to maintain the dignity, the solemnity, the sacred nature of this protest.

We struggle with the heat, the right-wing critics and the imminent threat of shotgun guy. This vigil is a hardship, but everytime I think of quitting I see Casey's face and I remember why I'm here. To get some answers about why my toddling baby boy was sent to war.

An aide came out the other day and offered to let us speak with some underling named Steve Hadley, the 'national security advisor.' None of us had any idea what that meant, so we turned it down. Only a militaristic regime like the Bushes would pay someone to advise them on how to kill foreigners and American boys.

I'm getting tired, so I think I'm going to go back to the new trailer. It's got air conditioning, so those of you concerned about my health in this heat can relax. I've gotten so many nice emails from all of you - it just makes the criticism fade away.

Some people are saying Harry Belafonte may stop by later tonight. That would be neat. "Day-O" is such a great song.

After that, me and the pesky neighbor are going to be blasting away.

What's in season in September? Just doves?

It's been a long time since I lived there, and when I did, I didn't hunt. My cousins once brought back a javelina they'd shot, though. Ugliest thing I'd ever seen.

Texas countryside is a little noisy on opening weekend of dove season.

Are you oiling up your over/under, Dave?

Posted by: Michael on August 16, 2005 03:38 PM

They hunt full-size wild pigs, which are truly scary creatures and can be dangerous. Javelinas are the little dudes.

But for some reason, Texans just have a passion for knockin' those little doves out of the sky.

Dove season, Zone 2.. Sept 1 to Oct. 30, then another one between Christmas in New Years.

And yes, the Beretta 12 ga. is ready to go. I splurged last year and bought an automatic. I can't believe I waited so long.

Oh, and when I was a kid we were hunting javelinas in South Texas, and we got downwind of a whole herd of wild pigs crossing the road.

They have tusks that will rip your leg open.

We left em alone. Waaaaayy to many of them. And we stayed reaaaaal quiet till they left.

A while back, we were driving in way, waaaaay southwest Texas, following our friend Allen, and the road took a big dip. Coming back up, Allen's truck surprised a dove sitting by the side of the road. It took off at the perfect moment to fly directly into his oncoming passenger side rear view mirror.

The only thing we saw was a huge, instantaneous explosion of white feathers.

Dogstar,

BAAAAHH AHHHAHHHAA!

Just like that dove that Randy Johnson nailed in an exhibition game in Florida a few years ago, except inside the truck.

Lots of folks speculated as to why that dove chose that moment to fly in front of a Randy Johnson fast ball.

I think the dove was expecting curveball

Posted by: Dave in Texas on August 16, 2005 05:24 PM

Yeah, I forgot about Randy Johnson. People thought he was aiming for the bird. He's good, but I don't think he's that good.

BTW, the feather explosion occurred outside the truck, on the passenger side door (the mirror that sticks out), but it was still hilarious and a total surprise to all of us.

No points for that. The real aficionados use over/unders, which they buy in London for about $40K.

But, if you want to shop American, you can start here.

The only bad part of the trilogy are the Frodo/Sam chapters in The Two Towers. They're repetitive, slow, and mostly about the weather and terrain. But most everything else is good. Weirdly, the Frodo-Sam chapters in Return of the King are exciting and action-packed and among the best in the trilogy. (Though the chapters with everyone else in Return of the King get pretty slow again. Mostly people talking about marching towards war, and then marching towards war.)

[A]n asshole is somebody who looks at a painting of two toddlers doing something totally normal for toddlers and decides that it represents homosexuality and then thinks that publicly saying that is somehow edgy and clever. Instead it is doing what we accuse the Left of, that is sexualizing young children. If that describes you, own it.

Reports: The A-10 Thunderbolt, better known as The Warthog, has been unleashed on Iran
It's a heavily armored (the pilot sits in a titanim bathtub) slow-and-low loitering plane with a massive minigun firing depleted uranium rounds. The capability it brings is the ability to just fly big circles over the country waiting for a target to present itself. This is a weapons platform for eliminating vehicles and personnel. Its first task might be strafing the seas, clearing out any remaining attack boats and minelayers.
Update: My ballpark estimate for a reasonable cost for a wildlife overpass (suitably padded to sate the thirst of Democrat grifters) was $15 million. Turns out, that was a good estimate. That's how much it cost Denver to build one.
