The Island Update

Anonymous comments that The Island, as much as it swipes from Logan's Run, actually swipes a lot more from a B-grade film called Parts: The Clonus Horror, featuring a nearly identical premise and plotline.

That film seems to have swiped from LR too, but The Island may have come a little too close for comfort. The producers of that movie -- apparently chiefly remembered now for being ripped on Mystery Science Theater 3000 -- are contemplating legal action against The Island, including a federal injunction against its further exhibition or distribution.

Eh, they'll get paid off a little bit.

Word to the wise: Guys, don't take "net points" in the movie. Gross points, gross points, gross points.

Loose shit: Yeah, I got net and gross points backwards. Eeesh.

I really did know the difference. Brainfart.

Uh, isn't it the other way around?

I think you've got it backwards -- gross points might mean something; net points are equivalent to bupkis.

uhhhh... yeah. My bad.

Did anybody ever see a story on The Truman Show?

A New York Public Library worker had written and produced a few off-off-off Broadway plays, and even invited some Hollywood producer to come see one (he was a friend of a friend, or somethig like that). He never knew if the Hollywood guy actually showed up or not.

Anyway, the gist of the zero-budget play was that a man had been adopted at birth for the purpose of being put on a TV show, but -- get this -- the guy didn't know he was on TV! His whole life was a TV show, and he didn't even know it!

The only original part of the Truman Show, apparently, was that in the play, the TV show was a loser, on the verge of being cancelled, but in the movie, it was the biggest hit.

If the writer of that play can't win an infringement suit, then the Clonus guy doesn't stand a chance.

There was even a ripoff of that movie..Ed TV or something like that

Man, I'm going to have to beak out my copy of the MST3K episode where they did "Parts: The Clonus Horror"!

Posted by: Jimmie on July 25, 2005 05:42 PM

Yes! Th MST3K of PArts: The Clonus Horror is one of their finer ones. "I am confused!"

Posted by: jpok on July 25, 2005 08:25 PM

Shouldn't the fact that a movie made it onto MST3K be a pretty good red flag against ripping it off? No wonder hollywood is in a slump - they keep crapping out material like this, loathe though I am to come down too hard on any movie with the lovely Ms. Johansson in it.

Ace.... you've got to stop working on ORIGINAL screenplays and start devoting some serious time to plagiarising work already done!

Posted by: Anita on July 26, 2005 12:56 AM

I've been trying to tell people this for weeks but so few of my acquaintances are appreciators of MST3K. If 'Parts: The Clonus Horror' were made with 10x the budget and some major sexy stars, there would have been no way to make 'The Island' without securing the rights to a semi-remake in advance.

So when do we see the big budget copy of 'Catalina Caper?'

The 'Logan's Run' similarity is extremely strained. The only aspect is that the people in both stories are misled to believe in a false hope of a future beyond this current lives. Both can be considered variants of Eloi & Morlocks relationship, so neither can really call dibs.

I'm just waiting for a remake of "Manos: The Hands of Fate."

Worst.

I disregard their hate. It's the violence that we object to. And we will begin objecting to it with force.
Update: Kash Patel says the person of interest has been interrogated and then released. Wrong guy, I guess.
But as the hours pass without a real suspect, and with the FBI apparently interrogating uninvolved people, I begin to fear the assassin has escaped. I mean, they don't seem to be following a breadcrumb trail, they seem genuinely baffled.

If this is the guy -- apparently he also interned at Heritage.

There was fear aplenty. But the truth is, a lot of the panic Americans saw on television was performative. The throngs of people along Convention Center Boulevard sat patiently in the broiling weather, five or six deep in folding chairs on the sidewalk, waiting for something, someone, to arrive. Then, a television crew or photographer would show up, and people would pour into the street, falling on their knees, screaming and gesticulating to the camera. It was an awful situation, obviously, but when the camera wasn't on them, it was remarkable how patient and orderly everyone was.

Elric the Blade says he's no longer sure that Trump will have the right to appeal in the NY fraud case:
Yesterday, I thought that Trump had an appeal as of right on the fraud liability, based upon news reports that cited the second opinion as declining to find in favor of liability. That would give Trump at least 2 dissenting judges for an appeal as of right.
But now, after seeing the actual decisions, I'm not so sure. Sorry, guys. I've never seen or heard of what the second opinion did. They dissented, but ... decided not to dissent? I'm not sure what the effect is in terms of whether Trump has a right to appeal. I doubt anyone does.
I think even if Trump doesn't have a right of appeal, the Court of Appeals (NY's highest court) will take the case. But ... it's a liberal court so who knows how they'll rule. I have the docket number so I can track what gets appealed to the Court of Appeals. If Trump wants to appeal, I think he might file an appeal as of right and a petition for permission to appeal. His lawyers know this case much better than I, but even they might know what the effect of all the opinions are.
I don't think they'll take the appeal. Judges are lazy and cowardly and will duck any hot potato case they can. These judges are also liberal hacks, and do not want to deliver Trump a full victory.
