Real Or PR?: Musharraf Delcares "Holy War" on "Preachers Of Hate" And Radical MadrassasI know the Brits put pressure on Pakistan after it was discovered three of the 7/7 bombers went to Pakistan terror camps for training; but how could such a shift possibly come now, after the 7/7 attacks, when no such crackdown came after 9/11? What sort of pressure did the Brits (and US, presumably) apply? And is this a real crackdown or an Arafat-like series of revoloving door "arrests"? I have no idea about what this means, if anything: After a blitz of detentions of suspected militants and Islamists, Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf called for a holy war against preachers of hate and announced steps to curb militant Islamic schools and groups. This makes it seem like a real dragnet and not a PR ploy: As Musharraf spoke, security forces raided the house of Hakeem Ehsan Jigranwi, president of the Punjab chapter of the Pakistani wing of Hizb ut-Tahrir in the eastern city of Lahore, detaining him and another man. Hmm... I didn't think we could ratchet up the pressure on Musharraf much more than we had been doing, but maybe I was wrong. Of course, if this results in the destabilization of Pakistan and the takeover of the country by now nuclear-armed terrorists, that's trouble with a capital T that rhymes with P that stands for preemtive nuclear strike. posted by Ace at 07:22 PM
CommentsI vote PR ploy. Posted by: on July 21, 2005 07:32 PM
I have that suspicion, BUT these lunatics get pissed off by even catch-and-release harassment, so Musharraf is probably really worried about their reaction, which would tend to suggest they ought to be kept locked up. Posted by: ace on July 21, 2005 07:36 PM
I think our strengthing alliance with India, has allowed the US to put more pressure on Pakistan. Musharraf doesn't want to be on our badside now that we are based in Afghanistan, and militarily allied with India. Posted by: Stormy70 on July 21, 2005 08:40 PM
I believe Mr. Musharraf is up to his ass in alligators and is now and has been trying to drain the swamp. The Madrassas are supported throughout the wilds of Pakistan by many enemies of freedom. As SECDEF Rumsfeld approves of him, I believe we should too, after all SECDEF knows more than any of us do...lots more! Posted by: Thunderstixx on July 21, 2005 10:55 PM
Just throwing this out there. If UBL were captured or killed in Pakistan soon, wouldn't it be a good thing for Musharraf if some of the more extreme groups were disabled ahead of time? Posted by: Silk on July 22, 2005 01:16 AM
Maybe the Brits threatened to ship all the radical "refugees" back to Pakistan. Posted by: Sarah on July 22, 2005 09:34 AM
All of the above, plus the fact that Pakistan was for many years a British colony [part of India]. Maybe the Brits still have some residual influence or favor with the Pakistanis? Posted by: Mark_D on July 22, 2005 11:00 AM
One thing we know, Pervez thinks he can now say this sort of thing and live. Even if it's only a PR ploy, he must think he has that much of a handle on his country. Posted by: Bob Hawkins on July 22, 2005 11:19 AM

Tomorrow is March 25th, "Tolkien Reading Day," because March 25th is the day when the Ring is destroyed in the book. I think I'm going to start the Hobbit tomorrow and read all four books this time.
The only bad part of the trilogy are the Frodo/Sam chapters in The Two Towers. They're repetitive, slow, and mostly about the weather and terrain. But most everything else is good. Weirdly, the Frodo-Sam chapters in Return of the King are exciting and action-packed and among the best in the trilogy. (Though the chapters with everyone else in Return of the King get pretty slow again. Mostly people talking about marching towards war, and then marching towards war.)

US decimation of Iran's ICBM forces is due to Space Force's instant detection of launches -- and the launchers' hiding places -- and rapid counter-attack via missiles
AI is doing a lot of the work in analyzing images to find the exact hiding place of the launchers. Counter-strikes are now coming in four hours after a launch, whereas previously it might have taken days for humans to go over the imagery and data.

Update: Reports say The Warthog has been deployed against men
Thanks to fd. Yeah, thanks a bunch, Chief.
Reports: The A-10 Thunderbolt, better known as The Warthog, has been unleashed on Iran
It's a heavily armored (the pilot sits in a titanim bathtub) slow-and-low loitering plane with a massive minigun firing depleted uranium rounds. The capability it brings is the ability to just fly big circles over the country waiting for a target to present itself. This is a weapons platform for eliminating vehicles and personnel. Its first task might be strafing the seas, clearing out any remaining attack boats and minelayers.
Update: My ballpark estimate for a reasonable cost for a wildlife overpass (suitably padded to sate the thirst of Democrat grifters) was $15 million. Turns out, that was a good estimate. That's how much it cost Denver to build one.
