Hmmm... Maybe Gays Are the New Jews After All

Okay, so, the other day Rick Santorum made some controversial remarks blaming the priest pedophilia scandal on the general libertine nature of our culture, and thought it no suprise that the locus of the American side of the scandal was in Boston, a capital for liberal thought.

A bit over-the-top, a bit Limbaugh-when-he's-trying-to-fill-time-ish, but whatever. Argue against him and all that if you like.

But how does one get from that statement -- which, admittedly, might be criticized for being somewhat irresponsible and kneejerkedly partisan -- to claiming Santorum is blaming the Jews?

Well, you have to check out the Huffington Post for answers.

Oh, wait, no you don't; I can just post the salient bits here.

Rick Santorum believes that the scandal of child molestation by priests isn't actually the priests' fault, but the culture's. And when he talks about "the culture," it sure sounds like he's blaming the Jews.

In his article for the website Catholic Online, Santorum writes:

"It is startling that those in the media and academia appear most disturbed by this aberrant behavior, since they have zealously promoted moral relativism by sanctioning "private" moral matters such as alternative lifestyles. Priests, like all of us, are affected by culture. When the culture is sick, every element in it becomes infected. While it is no excuse for this scandal, it is no surprise that Boston, a seat of academic, political and cultural liberalism in America, lies at the center of the storm."

So priests aren't really responsible for their own aberrant behavior; they're victims too.

But look more closely at the environment Santorum is blaming: liberals, the media, and academics. Hmm. Starts to sound like code for something else, doesn't it?

...

So we return to the media and the non-Catholic universities, both chock full of the people ostensibly behind all this moral relativity: Jews. Because I'm sure it's not all those other churchgoing types that Santorum blames for Boston's "sick" culture.

What Santorum is really saying then—using all-too-familiar code words— is that the Catholic Church child molestation scandal is really the Jews' fault.

Uhhhh, okay.

Liberals should keep this sort of irresponsibility in mind the next time they complain about Rove making the quite-defensible statement that liberals' commitment to the war on terror (not the "response" to terror) was tepid and half-hearted at best.

Was Santorum wrong to blame the priest scandal on "the culture"? Well, maybe, a bit; conservatives are pretty keen on blaming the actual perpetrators of crimes rather than "society" or "culture," and the deviation from that basic belief does seem a bit politically convenient.

But to read into that an indictment of the Jews? Give me a break.

There's an awful lot of monkey-see, monkey-do on the left. We say the media is biased to the left; they begin claiming it's biased to the right.

We criticize Durbin for his plainly anti-military rhetoric; they decide that Karl Rove's remarks about liberals not being quite enthusiastic about terror deserves equal condemnation.

And now-- we point out that the "progressive" left is now infected with an awful lot of nasty anti-semitism; they have to respond by finding some Super Secret Double-Plus-Good Encrypted anti-semitic "code words" in Santorum's remarks.

PS, there really aren't too many Jews in Boston. Of course there are plenty, but it's just not the case that Boston has that strong Jewish influence to its city culture that, say, New York so plainly does.

No one ever said they were happy to be in Boston so they could finally get a good bagel with lox. No one.

Thanks to the Mighty Allah, who calls you all to jihad through biting photoshopping.

Right there is where you could have cropped that sentence.

Ace,

This is getting so bizarre, and so tiresome at the same time.

Is this really what people think?

Or do they just write this crap to get there names some exposure?

Posted by: MeTooThen on June 29, 2005 01:48 PM

Good point: The Left has been taking some heat for its anti-Semitism, so they have to indulge in their usual projection by claiming conservatives are the anti-Semites. But even for the nitwits at Huffington Post, this article is a real laugher. I'll take it to mean that despite their best efforts, lefties could find no evidence whatsoever of right-of-center anti-Semitism.

Posted by: brak on June 29, 2005 01:51 PM

Without speaking to the substance of the debate, just a factual note that's getting overlooked by a lot of the posts on this: It looks like Santorum actually wrote that article back in July of 2002, it's just that it first came up as a controversy (I believe here) a few days ago.

Posted by: Hubris on June 29, 2005 01:52 PM

Please note that the scandal on the West Coast grew out of the San Francisco Archdiocese. I know because I happened to grow up in the eye of the storm, and know personally both the guys and the priests involved in many of the scandals. I also know of several that were never reported. Most of the priests involved were shipped out of SF churches to the outlying parishes AFTER initial allegations had surfaced. The following years brought pedophilia to those outlying parishes as well, of course.
My Dad was a former SF Cop, turned Fireman.
His buddies in the SFPD tipped him off to a couple of the guys shipped to our diocese, and Dad told us to watch out for those priests. We didn't need a warning. You could see the slimy ones from a mile away. These guys weren't after us, though, as they preyed on kids who came from families who were going through rough times. Goddam pigs.
Does that mean that Santorum is right?
Is it coincidence?

As for Jewish presence in Boston; there is a large, thriving, and culturally important Jewish community in Brookline, adjoining Boston. Brookline is also the birthplace of Conan O'Doyle--btw this thread's beginning to creep me out

Posted by: Paul Freedman on June 29, 2005 02:00 PM

What is it with liberals and their strange belief that we conservative-types have "code words"? If we do, I have yet to receive my "Super-Duper Racist Terminology Decoder Ring" in my box of Frosted Flakes.

Wait, not Frosted Flakes. "Flakes" is probably a code word for gay. I won't be caught eating that. Nor will I eat Fruity Pebbles or Cocoa Krispies. Maybe Vanilla Frosted Mini-Wheats.

Posted by: Jason on June 29, 2005 02:01 PM

Jefe, that sounds like a chicken or the egg argument, and a very sad one at that. Well, it all starts with individual corruption getting accepted by society, and then the two feed off each other. Once society starts going downhill, it's real tough to stop it thanks to the symbiotic effect.

Brookline is not technically Boston, but is a good place to look for bagels and lox, should you be so inclined.

The Huffington Post gets more deranged by the day. You should read some of the posts on the Bush speech.

Posted by: Defense Guy on June 29, 2005 02:02 PM

Of course there's a Jewish presence in Boston.

I just mean that unlike New York -- which has been characterized, in both positive and negative terms, for being a bastion of Jewish culture -- Boston is DEFINITELY Catholic in culture with some competition from the Protestant Brahmins.

Dipshits call New York City "Jew York City." But I've never heard them call Beantown "Beanie-town."

Posted by: ace on June 29, 2005 02:06 PM

This is a case of He who smellt it dealt it. If you see anti-Semitism there, if you think he means Jews, it's probably because you're thinking, "It's Jews!"

Posted by: spongeworthy on June 29, 2005 02:07 PM

Jason, make sure you wash that down with some homogenized milk.

Not that there's anything wrong with homogenized...

just not my thing.

Posted by: Jason on June 29, 2005 02:23 PM

The problem is both the Left and Right are dancing around some undiscussable Central truths and assumptions that led both sides to somewhat accurately charge "bias".

1. For various "progressive reasons" liberal Jews are huge backers of the gay agenda and gay marriage.

2. Santorum accurately notes that criticism of the gay agenda and gay marriage is virtually forbidden in academia, Hollywood, the Media. If anything, all vigorously promote only positive images of gays and push all the gay causes.

3. Huffington and other liberals deep down believe that liberal Jews control Hollywood, and good parts of academia and the media. And know those liberal Jews are commited to advancing gay causes. But can't really say what they believe - because they adhere to the "rule" that only one ethnic group in the US is still granted immunity from criticism due to earning a general bye from past suffering.

4. But "knowing" this, the liberals are aware that what Santorum is really criticizing is the pro-gay Jews running Hollywood, and good parts of the media and academia....so criticizing the 3 centers of influence is really all about criticizing the Jews. So Santorum's remarks are effectively "coded anti-Semitism".

5. Santorum, a bit of a nut as the Schiavo Fiasco revealed, is actually anti-liberal but a knee-jerk Christian Zionist who is not anti-Jew. He has the dilemma of whether or not to criticize institutions advancing a cause that directly goes against his conservative and religious beliefs...but institutions associated with Jewish power.

It would be better on the Left and Right, and for America, if the truth was not shielded on some notion that censorship prevents bad feelings.

Liberal Jews are strongly pro-gay, and their tremendous clout in Hollywood, academia, the media makes those institutions reflect a pro-gay agenda. That is just a fact. Keeping ethnic clout unsaid makes both sides hide assumptions and assume the worst about the other side. And, yes, use oblique words to hide what they believe or know.

Posted by: Cedarford on June 29, 2005 02:33 PM

Jeez. This is one of the rare occasions when I'd actually go along with Santorum to a certain extent, in that I think liberals, the media, and academia have had a rather baneful effect on the culture. But to read that as secret code for "Joooos!!"? I don't think so. My Uncle Sol would whack me upside the head for thinking any such thing.

It would be nice, though, if Santorum were to offer a Durbin-style non-apology: "I'm sorry if you paranoid, hypersensitive morons misinterpreted my remarks..."

Posted by: utron on June 29, 2005 02:33 PM

Cedarford,

Can you change your screen-name to "Don't Bother Reading This Turgid Anti-Jew, Anti-Everything Drivel"? It would help out, I think.

Ace -- that post of Cedarturd's was an improvement over his usual dribble. He didn't once mention anything about Joos=Commies

Posted by: Master of None on June 29, 2005 02:40 PM

He did manage to get the ever-present schiavo reference in though

Posted by: brak on June 29, 2005 02:42 PM

On the other hand "a knee-jerk Christian Zionist who is not anti-Jew" is breaking new ground for the 'turd.

Posted by: Master of None on June 29, 2005 02:47 PM

bbeck-
Not trying to make an argument.
Just wanted y'all to give a 'shout-out' to the West Coast pedophiles.
Point is, if the argument being made is that this situation grew out of the liberalism of the Boston area, then it has a West Coast cousin that shouldn't be ignored.
I didn't mean to infer that I agreed with said argument.
It's there for the pickin's.

Posted by: Uncle Jefe on June 29, 2005 02:47 PM

"a knee-jerk Christian Zionist who is not anti-Jew"

He meant both parts of that in a bad way.

Posted by: ace on June 29, 2005 02:53 PM

It's cool, Jefe, I wasn't looking for an argument. I was actually agreeing with you somewhat. Thing is, society can't corrupt without the people's help, which means that it's not coincidence that these rampant cases of peodphilia are occuring in morally bankrupt areas. But it's not a reflection of the society, the society is a reflection of it, and when the corruption becomes more accepted, more people engage in corrupt behavior. I'm just sorry we have to deal with it at all, and I'm VERY sorry you had to.

I think it is important to consider the context of this message in order to understand the latent anti-semitism. After e-mailing this article to Catholic Online, Senator Arlen Specter stopped in Santorum's office, whence the following exchange occurred.

Specter: Say, Rick, did you eat yet?

Santorum: No, Jew?

Developing...

Posted by: Glen on June 29, 2005 03:37 PM

Cedarford:

Your cogent analysis of Santorum's dillemma is incomplete. Can't you see the nexus between Hollywood Jewish liberals, gays, and the migration of knowledge work to China?

I'm disappointed, Cedarford. I expected better from you.

Posted by: Michael on June 29, 2005 07:01 PM

It seems people of every sort can be driven insane by the very concept of Jews. No other ancestral group, regardless of what extent they actively practice the faith or not at all, is so constantly singled out as a major identifying factor in their identity. This happens even if they're no more actively Jewish in their day to day lives than any of the millions of Americans born into other faiths but never especially active within them. I constantly see people identified as 'Jewish liberal' but never have I seen anyone not of the clergy spotted as an 'Episcopalian liberal' or 'Southern Methodist Liberal' or 'Sub-Genius liberal.'

I'm a person of Jewish ancestry who hasn't taken any religion seriously since childhood but the neverending identification makes me feel more Jewish than any amount of time spent in a synagogue. Where do I get my Conspiracy Member ID card?

Actually, if we have to blame something besides the individuals in the pederasty scandal, we should point at the entire liberalization movement that led to Vatican II. The Roman Catholic church was so far behind the times that certain elements in their leadership decided to push really, really hard left. Many of the U.S. seminaries became akin to gay sex clubs. This would have been impossible without the larger liberalization movement that Vatican II represented. My $.02 anyway. And if you haven't read Goodbye Good Men by Michael Rose, you should.

Islam reveres Him as a major prophet and messenger of the Lord, believes He performed miracles, and states that He will return to Earth to defeat the Antichrist.
