Two Anti-Dem AdsEh. They're both okay. Not sure if they'll change any minds. From Joe: An ad about Dick Durbin and the "America can do no right" contingent. From Karol, this ad making the point that this isn't your parents' Democratic Party anymore. I think there's some potential in that sort of take. The Democratic Party retains a lot of goodwill created by its previous icons and heroes... but do today's Democrats really have much in common at all with JFK? Can that be persuasive? Well, at one point I loved Woody Allen, then I suffered through a lot of his horrific eighties and nineties films still trying to believe I loved him, and then one day I just decided he sucked and I wouldn't see another one of his pictures for the rest of my life. (I made an exception for Manhattan Murder Mystery, as it sounded cute and funny, and goshdarnit, so it was.) How long can the Democrats ride JFK? Especially given the lack of anyone even close to JFK in its ranks? You know, when Ritchie left Happy Days, the show was never the same. Indeed, just before he left was when the show (quite literally) jumped the shark. posted by Ace at 05:10 PM
CommentsI shot you an email about that GOP one like a week ago. /here comes Dave with the "that's old" bit Posted by: fat kid on June 26, 2005 05:32 PM
The anti-Durbin ad is a waste of time. Durbin won't be up for re-election for another four years, at which point his statements and the reaction against them will have been dropped into the memory hole. If Illinois actually had a Republican party, the ads might make some sense; but it doesn't - there's just Democats and Democrats Lite. You'd be better off saving your dime for some true conservative in 2006, Posted by: Brown Line on June 26, 2005 07:25 PM
JFK was anti-communist. Need we say more? Posted by: lauraw on June 26, 2005 08:43 PM
Sorry, yes, we need say more. He also thought that lowering taxes increased revenues to the Treasury at the same time that it stimulated the economy. Posted by: lauraw on June 26, 2005 08:45 PM
Saw a bumper sticker (coulda been a Volvo) today that said: "Bush is a dumbass." OK, the driver is obviously superior to the majority of American voters, concise, and wants everyone to know it. I generally abhor bumper stickers but would consider posting one that said: "Bush is a moron. Smart politicians campaign to lose elections." Posted by: on June 26, 2005 09:54 PM
About the Durbin ad... it seems like a normal political attack ad with the spooky voiceover and quotes flashed on a screen. That doesn't work for me. I almost immediately tuned it out. I finally watched Durbin's speech and that ALONE got my blood boiling. It was one thing to read it, quite another to see him say it. I think a more effective ad would be Durbin's actual face and words... starting... nothing edited or taken out of context, then crossfade to pictures of our troops... the ones he is calling Soviets and Nazis... the men and women I know and work with and the ones I miss while they are away, with the rest of his trite little speech running as the audio. End with the words on the screen: This is the Democrat Party. Enough is enough.
Looks like I need to hop on the old iMovie and make something. Posted by: downtime on June 26, 2005 10:18 PM
downtime: Sounds great to me. I think you should send your resume to: RNCommunications@gop.com Posted by: Michael on June 26, 2005 10:53 PM
Even though Durbin isn't up for re-election next year, there are a lot of Dems who are. The GOP should run an Ad with Durbin's speech and ask why hasn't (insert dem candidate's name here) condemed this speech yet. Posted by: Iblis on June 26, 2005 11:36 PM
If you look closely at what JFK tried to do, and at what GWB is trying to do, you should find that (not allowing for the difference in eras context) GWB is somewhat left of JFK! One must look at what GWB is actually trying to do, not what he says he is doing. A true conservative would be actually trying to trim the functions of government back to what the Constitution explicitly allows. It would be nice to see a true conservative in the White House again (Reagan was close), but it ain't gonna happen for a while, especially since anyone moderately conservative is labelled a nazi or a right-wing crazy, and generally grouped in with all us theocrat religious nuts. Do it, downtime. Posted by: lauraw on June 27, 2005 11:47 AM
I finally watched Durbin's speech and that ALONE got my blood boiling. It was one thing to read it, quite another to see him say it. I think a more effective ad would be Durbin's actual face and words ... Damn right! And the idea that he's not up for reelection and therefore this is a waste of money is wrong. When Liberals are wrong (which is all of the time) we should call them on it and keep calling them on it. This has the effect of keeping them in a negative light and on the defensive. It worked with Tom Daschle it'll work with this dick, too. Posted by: 72 VIRGINS on June 27, 2005 01:13 PM
Joe here - and I appreciate the ad being linked - and the ensuing discussion that followed. About the Durbin in his own words approach... yes, absolutely this was discussed. The problem - only way we've made it work where you can understand the setup is to make a 60-second ad (you can get stations to sell you 10, 15, 30 and 60 second ads or purchase infomercial time). The costs to air the 60-second spot were twice as high as the 30-second one. So... the MAF board decided to go forward with the :30 and if it works and there is a good reaction, that can then fund the production and broadcast of a :60 second spot with a good 20-30 seconds of Durbin in his own words. Cheers - thanks again for the feedback. Love it! I will pass it on to our leadership peeps (aka Howard Kaloogian, Melanie Morgan, Sal Russo, Lt. Col. Buzz Patterson, et. al) Posted by: Joe on June 27, 2005 07:20 PM

ANOTHER LEFT WING ASSASSIN ATTEMPTS TO KILL TRUMP
If I understand this, the left-wing Democrat assassin attempted to get into the White House Correspondents Association dinner, and was stopped at the magnetometers, which detected his gun. I guess he pulled out the gun and was shot by Secret Service agents. Erika Kirk was present.
