Am I Crazy, Or Is It Impossible to Capture a Terrorist Using "Art"?

Top Secret deep-cover goverment source "Deep Stoat" sends the following observation:

Listed below is a selection of organizations that received federal grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in fiscal year 2005....

Assuming passage of the bill reported by the full Senate Appropriations committee and sent to the floor of the Senate, the NEA is set to receive $126 million next year, an increase of $5 million over its current funding level. In contrast, Senate appropriators are set to underfund President Bush’s budget request for defense by $7 billion.

Let's be honest. Art should pay for itself. If it's not paying for itself, it's not good art.

What about "great art" that can't find a large enough audience to make itself profitable?

Look, we all do things we don't want to do. If you're a writer or sculptor or whatever, and you want to serve the not-very-high-paying counter-culture, I'm sorry, take a day job or mix up your transgressive works with some commercially viable stuff. You can do the commercially-viable stuff under a psuedonym if you like.

I'm tired of paying money so that artists (both alleged and actual) don't have to compromise their integrity by doing work that might actually support them. No government agency is paying me money to turn this crap out; perhaps if I were on the taxpayer's dime I'd feel differently. But I'm not so I don't.

Examples of the important "art" being funded by the NEA follow. It's not that each grant is very large, especially by the standards of our drunken-sailor US government welfare regime. But the size of the grants don't matter. I don't spend money on brussel sprouts because I don't like them and there's no point in spending money on something I neither need nor want. It doesn't matter that they're 2 for $1.59 at PathMark.

As Michael Kinsley observed, long before he descended into nasty knee-jerk hackdom, you have every right to be part of the counter-culture. But you don't have the right to be counter-culture on someone else's dime.

Sorta runs contrary to the idea of "counter-culture," actually.

What can you find on the Feminist Press website?

1. Customers can purchase “Families”, a children’s book that according to Feminist Press explores “realities such as divorce, stepfamilies, adoption, single parenting, and gay and lesbian parenting through the curious, affectionate, and nonjudgemental eyes of six-year-old Angie as she introduces readers to her multicultural groups of friends.”

2. Under the section entitled “Teacher Resources”, readers can find “The New Lesbian Studies: Into the Twenty-First Century”. According to Feminist Press, this collection “explores the history of lesbian studies as well as its current impact on conceptions of identity and community, teaching, academic disciplines, university practices, and the development of feminist and queer theories.” If teachers submit a brief review to Feminist Press about how this educational resource was used in the classroom, they are eligible to receive a free book!

3. Under the “Special Projects” portion of the web site, readers can also find a massive list of links to various leftist anti-war web sites and organizations, including MoveOn.org, Amnesty International, and International A.N.S.W.E.R.

4. Under “Events”, readers can find a list and description of events held by Feminist Press. Past honorees at the organization’s events include Sen. Hillary Clinton and former democratic Congresswoman Pat Schroeder.

Children’s Book Press – San Francisco, CA

$30,000

http://www.childrensbookpress.org/

On the website, readers can find and order “Antonio’s Card”, a book about a child and his feelings on Mother’s Day. According to a description of the book, “Antonio loves words, because words have the power to express feelings like love, pride, or hurt. Mother’s Day is coming soon, and Antonio searches for the words to express his love for his mother and her partner, Leslie.”

“Rigoberto Gonzalez’s sensitive and lovingly crafted story of Antonio’s dilemma will resonate with all children who have been faced with speaking up for themselves or the people they love.” The book is recommended for children ages 6 and up.

This book is also listed as a teacher’s guide under the “Teaching and Learning” section of the web site. Children’s Book Press notes that the “Gay-Lesbian” and “Mexican-American” communities may be most receptive to the book.

A press release from the organization notes that “the main conflict of the story is not the same-gender relationship between Antonio’s mother and Leslie. Instead, their relationship serves as the setting and the story focuses on learning to accept other people’s differences.”

Coffee House Press – Minneapolis, MN

$30,000

http://www.coffeehousepress.org/

From the web site, readers can order “Summit Avenue”, a novel that details the “story of a young German immigrant experiencing her spiritual and sexual awakening.”

“This turbulent tale, while apparently telling of a lesbian relationship, is talking even more about the flight back into the mythic depths of womanhood – the old, pre-Christian, woman-centered community.”

The same crowd (the crowd without 'real' jobs)
drives around in beat-up clunkers with bumper stickers about 'Free Health Care For All', anti-globalization, etc. For the choices they've made to be 'counter-culture', they expect the rest of us to pick up the tab.

Wasn't "getting RID of the NEA" on the Contract With America?

Later,

Maybe if you wrote some lesbian poetry, you might be able to get some of that crazy blog money via the federal government.

The part of the funding that is the height of hypocrisy is its support of negative religious art. If the ACLU would hold true to its position of Separation of Church and State it would oppose funding of these exhibits. The Separation clause is not to be limited to separation of only positive religious symbols from government support but should cover all religious symbols and exhibits. And again, T-shirt girl is hot.

It's nice to know that there are military families just scraping by while we spend money on these people.

When one reads the history of American popular song, one can only come away with the conclusion that (as Rick Rublin put it): it is a triumph of art and creative expression that so much really good music was written and popularized despite all of the attempts to homogonize it into cheap, formulaic drivel written for the masses.

Would that it were still true today ...

I forget, when did the artist become more important than his work? Or, when did it become anti-art to do art for money? Was it the Nineteenth Century?

Michaelangelo peformed work to order (OK, he fudged a lot and almost came to blows with the Pope, who could have messed him up since he was a trained and experienced soldier instead of Mike's usual barroom opponents), Leonardo da Vinci, Praxitiles, Homer, Beethoven, Mozart, Rembrandt... Work for money, then if there's time left maybe do something and hope to sell it later.

OTOH, some of them worked on government commission. But then, the WPA had a lot of good artists working for it. But even the WPA usually specified at least the theme to be used: I suspect if a WPA artist came up with a work that portrayed Santa Ana as a hero of Texas that artist would never work for the WPA again.

Blast it all! Ace, you've given me a great idea to get liberals off the military's back...

Gitmo is not a Gulag.

Gitmo is not even a POW camp.

Gitmo is federally-funded PERFORMANCE ART.

If the libs have a problem with that, they can take it up with the ACLU.

Posted by: Allan Guyton on June 20, 2005 07:56 PM

Given that the music and theatrical (movies, tv, plays) industries are multi-million dollar industries with the successful artists in them among the wealthiest people in our country, then I'd say that art in this country is not only well funded but also one of the most recognizable aspects of American culture.

What we are really talking about here when it comes to government funding of art is funding for crappy art that can't survive on its own in the free market. Government funding of art distorts the market and makes it more difficult for good artists to make a living because so many bad artist won't quit.

If there was a market for pictures of crucifixes sitting in a pool of piss, then government funding wouldn't be needed to support this type of "art".

Posted by: Windycity on June 21, 2005 12:59 PM

bbeck comes real close: taking on the NEA. If those ivory tower idiots had their way, only the "intellectual" would be free to "do his (or her) thing" while the non-intelligent worker pays for their comfort.

As long as any section of guv'mint demands a percentage of cost of a new (public) building be laid to "art", poor suckers like me will be enraged about bluenoses too lazy to be productive in society.

Artists naturally lean toward socialism, because their lazy elitism is the backbone of such a system. If it was worth anything to begin with, people would pay for it voluntarily. Obviously, most art ain't worth anything these days, 'cause people ain't buyin' voluntarily.

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.
(((Dan Hodges)))
@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.

I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
