Perhaps Live8 Won't Be A Bad Idea After All. [Dave at Garfield Ridge]

I've been pretty harsh on the motives behind the upcoming Live8 charity concerts.

I haven't reconsidered my stance-- they are still a cheap way of assuaging rich white guilt for ignoring the dark continent.

However, I must admit, they scored quite a coup for their London concert:

Pink Floyd is reuniting for Live8.

How. Cool. Is. That?

Sigh. If only Sting could get The Police back together for the night.

Alright, open thread: your dream concert, five acts, any time period, in any venue.

My submission:
1. Bruce Springsteen, Nebraska era (everything after this was downhill)
2. Metallica, . . . And Justice For All era (everything after this was a different band)
3. Van Halen, Diver Down era (ditto)
4. Nirvana, just before they released Nevermind.
5. The Beatles, had they taken Lorne Michaels' offer.

Venue? The Stone Pony, Asbury Park, New Jersey.

I'll admit, it probably wouldn't flow together all that great, but damn it, I'd have a great time.

The Clash
The Beatles
The Doors
Hendrix
Nirvana

No idea what the best venue would be, never been to a concert anywhere I'd call great.

Posted by: TheDude on June 13, 2005 02:14 PM

The Who - anywhere outdoors
Dyland and The Band - at the Historic Orpheum in Mpls.

Posted by: Master of None on June 13, 2005 02:19 PM

Of course I meant Dylan

Posted by: Master of None on June 13, 2005 02:20 PM

Wow. That should be interesting, even with Waters' moonbat views.

Any venue
1) King Crimson- "Red" era
2) Pink Floyd- "Animals" era
3) Genesis- before Gabriel left
4) Cream
5) Motley Crue- "Theatre of Pain" (doesn't fit in with the others, but the comedic value would be great)

Posted by: prolix on June 13, 2005 02:20 PM

Stones, 1971 or 1972.
Clapton, 1974 or 1975.
Pink Floyd, 1975.
Zep, 1971 or 1972.
Beatles, late 1967 (after Magical Mystery Tour).

Venue? Wherever I could get a front row seat. Preferably a 7,500 to 15,000 seat arena.

Oh, and one more thing. None of this three songs and you're off bullshit. I want the full 2+ hours from each of them.

Posted by: Dogstar on June 13, 2005 02:21 PM

Guns n Roses, 2, 3, 4 from your list, and late 70s Pink Floyd

Posted by: brak on June 13, 2005 02:23 PM

The Pony? Finally, a reason to go into Asbury Park.

Posted by: Zorachus on June 13, 2005 02:33 PM

I'd resurrect some dead guys and hope it doesn't turn out like The Monkey's Paw or whatever that old horror story was called.

1) Lynnard Skynnard
2) Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble

Maybe at the Tulsa Assembly Center, just so these guys don't have to travel too far in their condition.

Posted by: spongeworthy on June 13, 2005 02:44 PM

1) Jeffries Fan Club
2) Live on Release
3) Nirvana (Nevermind era)
4) The Doors
5) The Clash (London Calling era)

Yes, I know, you've never heard of the first two. Your loss.

Posted by: Kin on June 13, 2005 02:52 PM

I haven't seen Captain and Taneal on anyone's list yet and I know some of you sick fuckers are into Muskrat Love. It all starts with gerbils then, before you know it, you wind up with a live otter up your ass.

Bunch of miscreant whackos.

Posted by: compos mentis on June 13, 2005 02:56 PM

And Justice For All was the first step in Metallica's decline... Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets were better, more honest.

Posted by: on June 13, 2005 03:30 PM

David Gilmour already singled out the US for criticism.

David Gilmour released a statement on the group's website saying, 'Like most people I want to do everything I can to persuade the G-8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world. It's crazy that America gives such a paltry percentage of its GNP to the starving nations,' he said.

Fuck this concert. I'm sick of these sniveling asswipes.

Posted by: on June 13, 2005 03:55 PM

Uh, that was me above.

Posted by: The Warden on June 13, 2005 03:56 PM

RE: And Justice For All & Metallica,

I was going to go with Master of Puppets (Best. Album. Ever.), but I chose . . . And Justice For All because "One" kicks serious ass, and I had to hear that.

They can probably skip the rest of the album after that.

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on June 13, 2005 04:31 PM

I had seen some interview with him where he essentially admitted to agreeing with Waters on politics. That statement about America essentially seals the deal. Just out of curiosity, I wonder how much of his money goes to the"starving nations?" Asswipe. I'll be skipping this piece of crap, too.

Is there any way we can mix artists together for our ultimate lineup? Like say, put Paul Anka in front of Van Halen? Tom Jones fronting Megadeth?

Posted by: US Soldier on June 13, 2005 04:33 PM

1) Gabriel-era Genesis
2) The Who before Keith died
3) The classic Yes lineup (Anderson, Howe, Squire, Wakeman, White)
4) Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac
5) Pre-Aqualung Jethro Tull

Posted by: Captain Ned on June 13, 2005 05:49 PM

The problem with Guns n' Roses is you have to get them on a good night. Saw them twice. Once shitty, once amazing.

A Floyd reunion. Damn. I wonder what their set list will be? I wanted to see them on the Pulse tour, but couldn't get away from the Army for the weekend.

Manowar, 1991 on the Kings of Metal tour
Metallica, 1986 for Master of Puppets. Seen them since.
Guns n' Roses, 1987 for Appetite
Robert Johnson, some dark 1930's night in the Mississippi delta, to see if he really was the greatest blues guitarist of all time.
Jimi Hendrix, 1969.

Pink Floyd memory: I happened to be in Venice, Italy in June or July of '89 and they were doing a concert from a barge in the lagoon.

I remember drifting off to sleep, hotel window open, in that delicious point between waking and sleep, listening to "Comfortably Numb".

Posted by: Lipstick on June 14, 2005 01:41 AM

Nirvana pre-Nevermind, (seen it, unbelievable)
The Minutemen
The Ramones any time
Hendrix
The Doors

Venue: Saratoga Springs outdoor venue (forget the name, saw the Dead there once).

Posted by: Datou on June 14, 2005 02:04 AM

Zeppelin, Yes, and Genesis all '73
Rush '78
Hendrix '69

This is to The Warden and Prolix:

I know people don't like to hear non-Americans making make critical comments about our country or government, but I think David Gilmour had a good point actually, and every right to express it.

Maybe our government should've been a little more concerned with 3rd- world poverty rather than funneling oil out of the middle east (Where is all that $$ going when we're currently paying $2.40 a gallan for gasoline? It's pretty much ascertained that it isn't going back into rebuilding Iraq -- or maybe I'm wrong, and that actually is the correct way to "fight terror", although I'm sure Haliburton is doing quite well for itself these days. Maybe they could right a check?)

Anyway, as far as David giving "his (own) money", I've heard that he's been quietly involved in numerous charities over the years, including donating the equivalent of 6 million USD to housing for the homeless in London. He just doesn't brag about it. Not everyone needs to wear their philanthropy on their sleeve for their own ego and adulation.

And while we're on the subject, what about all the politians who have money directed into their own private "offshore accounts". Why don't they donate some of their own money???

I don't mean to offend anyone, but calling David Gilmour an "asswipe" is completely inappropriate when he just stated his opinion. There are plenty of actual "asswipes" in power right now who have more money and alot more pull than David Gilmour ever will and could do alot more for the state of the our country and the world than what is currently being done.

And that is my opinion.

Oh and BTW, Pink Floyd is also donating profits from the increase of record sales since Live8 to the same cause.

Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. -- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.

@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:

I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
