100 Homicides at Gitmo and Other Terrorist Prisons? So claims not-quite-cute pundette Cece Connelly on the Brit Hume broadcast. Not to get all legal here, but a "homicide" is any death at the hands of another human. It is not, in fact, synonymous with "murder." Murder is subcategory of homicide. Numerous homicides are not illegal. Killing a prisoner as he riots or attempts to escape is technically a homicide, but it usually not a crime (assuming it was a justifiable homicide). Putting a prisoner in a hot-box, only to find later he had a weak heart and died within a couple of hours from the stress and heat, is also a "homicide," but it's an accidental homicide, and often not criminally chargeable unless there is a finding of willfully and knowingly putting the man's life in jeopardy. For that matter, the US has in fact ordered thousands of homicides. Killing soldiers on the field of battle is, technically, categorized as "homicides." But obviously they are lawful homicides. Are those on the left ignorant of these distinctions -- as they ignorant of the difference between what is colloquially called an "automatic pistol" but is in fact semi-automatic and not truly automatic like a machinegun? -- or do they deliberately use vague language in the hopes that the American public will equate "homicide" with "murder"? I don't know. They're both ignorant and shamelessly manipulative and dishonest to advance the left's cause du jour. So it is, as they say, overdetermined. They have a lot of reasons to say thing like this; it's hard to narrow it down to one specific motive. posted by Ace at 01:48 PM
CommentsThey never get in trouble for making these outrageous statements, since they can always fall back on the, "could be true." Posted by: on June 7, 2005 02:50 PM
I'm pretty sure the American public already equates "homicide" with "murder." Posted by: aaron on June 7, 2005 03:05 PM
The moonbats are always throwing "Thou shalt not kill" into the face of sane people, saying even the Bible says not to kill (the only time most will ever get near biblical reference or use). Problem is, the distinction is similar to what you point out: the Bible in fact says "Thou shalt not MURDER", which is not the same as "kill". Those sorry yo-yo's couldn't get it straight if their lives depended on it...which, in fact, they probably do. The left's just too moonbatty to know it. Posted by: Carlos on June 7, 2005 03:52 PM
I'm with you on the not quite cute thing. She's very close to being hot and may have been 5-10 years ago, but there is a certain something about her looks that give one pause. Don't get me wrong, I'd ruin that if given the chance but well she's still not quite cute. She's also taken alot of stick recently from Brit. I wonder if they have an abusive relationship. You answered your own question: of course they deliberately use vague language in the hopes that the American public will equate "homicide" with "murder" to: 1) create a stroy that'll sell 2) hurt the military 3) hurt our efforts at fighting terrorism 4) ultimately, to hurt W And I keep repeating the matra: if we want to end this shit we must boycott the MSM and their sponsors when they do this. This shit would stop overnight, over-fucking-night if the right boycotted the NYT and all of their sponsors effectively. THE RIGHT MUST BOYCOTT!!! Posted by: wretched refuse on June 7, 2005 05:50 PM
Britt's now taken it back; no word directly from Cece, at least on the part of the show I saw tonight. Uncharacteristic silliness from this crowd, I think, although Juan William, coming off his oh-so-important meal with Mr. Dean, seems to have bitten the hook pretty bad. So if homicides are the correct term... what exactly was wrong about the claim? *confused* Seems to me she meant "murder" and was just wrong. I have no clue where people get the idea that the press has an anti-military bias. I see stories every day about how brave "our men and women in uniform" are. Posted by: Mike on June 8, 2005 01:00 AM
The main reason she's "not-quite-cute", as our host very generously describes her, is because she has a Bolton-style 'stash working. Posted by: spongeworthy on June 8, 2005 10:23 AM

Don't know if you caught it, but last night Hume, noting Connelly's remark, gave a precise accounting of the number of deaths and causes. 25 or so were under criminal investigation. About the same number were deaths caused by Iraqi terrorists shelling the Abu Ghraib prison. Posted by: Karl Maher on June 8, 2005 11:40 AM

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals. The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite. Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
