Hoist the Black Flag at 4 PM ET

At Rightalk.com; look for "Now Playing-- Channel 1" at 4 ET.

Guests: Evan Coyne Maloney, who gave up a lucrative but frustrating career as a software designer to make conservative-themed documentaries. His first short got picked up by Fox News and was discussed by Rush Limbaugh for two days running. Not a bad start. Now he's done a short -- Brainwashing 101 -- about speech codes on campuses and the selective enforcement of such codes against conservatives. He's actually been funded to the tune of $250,000 to produce the full-length feature by a software magnate, and he just may be the right's answer to Michael Moore.

And... took a while to get a confirmation, but we'll be talking with Rich Lowry of NRO in the last (short segment). We'll ask him about Howard Dean... and maybe a little about Kerry's grades.

It's a theme show: while all these commencement speeches are going on, we'll be talking about universities and Kerry's grades.

We're geniuses or something. Well, not really. We're geniuses, but it hasn't come through yet on our shows... we hope to fix that.

Try calling in at 866-884-TALK. One of these days we'd like to have someone who introduces himself as "long time listener, first time caller," because, well, I always wanted to hear that.

Thanks for the corrections, LD and LW.

"Hoist the Black Flat" might have been a Freudian slip, given the low energy of last week's show.

I'm hopped up on dangerous narcotic diet pills in order to be a little bit punchier this time.

I think I'm going to do an ambush interview with Evan. He seems like a really cool guy, but I'm going to fuckin' gut the bastard. It's just not right that he's making a feature-length film and I'm still working on the script for my Transformers fanboy-short, which is all about an "alternate universe" in which Optimus Prime decides that fighting evil isn't for him and instead joins the thriving Key West arts-and-craft community to make necklaces from sea-shells and hermatite.

Ace, End of first paragraph, "length" spelled wrong.

Free, probably slightly annoying proofreading service!!

Posted by: Lipstick Dynamite on June 7, 2005 01:56 PM

Ace...you should ask Lowry about the return of the now-defunct 9/11 Commission? Does he know whether we're paying these a-holes any government money?

I hope not.

Posted by: Slublog on June 7, 2005 01:59 PM

Ace, me again, "Hoist the Black Flat"?

Posted by: Lipstick Dynamite on June 7, 2005 02:16 PM

So are you discussing paint matching? I tend to prefer gloss black myself with a coat of flat varnish myself...

Posted by: HowardDevore on June 7, 2005 02:27 PM

Thnk there's a pair of black flats in my closet that I never wear anymore.
If Ace wants to hoist a shoe in the air to make some arcane political statement, he can use mine.

Posted by: lauraw on June 7, 2005 02:51 PM

"Hematite", you effing moron.

Now get back to comparing modern political figures with 80s movies lest I have to work.

Posted by: Jamie on June 7, 2005 03:20 PM

Mancrush.

Posted by: someone on June 7, 2005 04:06 PM

Loose shit. Bush was 77, Kerry 76.

Posted by: someone on June 7, 2005 04:08 PM

Mancrush?

I would say more like man in LOVE...

Posted by: Slublog on June 7, 2005 04:09 PM

Ace does impressions!

Posted by: someone on June 7, 2005 04:16 PM

Am I the only one listening?

Posted by: someone on June 7, 2005 04:28 PM

I was just wondering the same thing.

Posted by: Slublog on June 7, 2005 04:29 PM

Woo hoo! F-bomb!

Posted by: Slublog on June 7, 2005 04:40 PM

I'm listening. Ace just said "fuck"! hehehe

Posted by: Lipstick Dynamite on June 7, 2005 04:40 PM

Whoops. Missed that.

Posted by: someone on June 7, 2005 04:42 PM

Do you guys have access to, you know, ratings?

Posted by: someone on June 7, 2005 04:54 PM

ace:

I liked last weeks show very much, thank you.

This week, too much talking over each other and laughing, making it difficult to hear. I will admit that I don't have the best speakers on my laptop, so it may be my problem - except for the cross talk.

Posted by: on June 7, 2005 05:29 PM

A little too much talking over eachother.

Sound bites a little ill-timed.

Otherwise another good show.

Please forgive me if this posting seems inappropriate. I need a favor from Conservative political blogs. If you have a moment, please read this posting on my blog, and then let me know when I can return the favor. Thanks.

Best show yet, very interesting and funny. Karol needs a bleep button though. I think I'm starting to get this whole 'South Park Conservative' concept.

Posted by: waelse1 on June 7, 2005 08:33 PM

Karol needs a bleep button though.

She's already got one: her foot.

Posted by: on June 7, 2005 09:15 PM

So, does the replay have ace saying fuck in it? If so, where? I don't want to miss it twice.

Posted by: on June 7, 2005 09:22 PM

I just got home, so haven't been able to listen to the Ace show yet, but wanted to offer up a radio-related tip for sometime in about five weeks' time (estimated): NPR should be broadcasting the City Arts & Lectures talk with Christopher Hitchens that I went to this evening. In the heart of San Francisco, in a theater filled to the brim with mostly middle-aged leftists, Hitch was on f'in fire.

Many highlights, but my favorite was his response to a question that raised a favorite meme among liberals - namely, that America is so hated overseas, and isn't he concerned about all the anti-Americanism and all the new enemies that we're supposedly creating through our recent foreign policy? Hitch countered with his account of all the new friends and allies the US is making in places like Iran, free Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and elsewhere; and told the audience to stop acting embarrased to be Americans, not only because we're currently on the right side of history, but because the posture they were taking was pathetic and unbecoming. I was one of about 20 people clapping madly at the end of that passage, while the rest of the theater just sat there and stewed. Priceless. Also nice was his calling out of our mayor for his idiotic line about how the money spent on Iraq would be better spent at home.

Anyway, check your local NPR station's schedule in 4 or 5 weeks for the broadcast.

I love Ace's commenters and I check in here during the show to read what you guys are saying. I'd love to get some criticism/advice from y'all. I'm soliciting it here: http://www.alarmingnews.com/archives/003115.html (sorry to link to myself in the comment section but I figure if Goomba up there can do it, I certainly can too.)

Posted by: Karol on June 8, 2005 04:04 AM

I sat on hold for a while (and I would gladly have said "Long time listener, first time caller," had I made it through), like through the middle third of the show, meaning I got to listen to Ace & Karol banter with the producer/engineer? during the commercial breaks (and scream my lungs out, for they could not hear me).

I was going to ask you to riff on the smart guys = bad presidents thing from the beginning. Eventually it dawned on me that in this business of show, you gotta keep your shit fresh, and that you wouldn't want to talk about something you mentioned off-the-cuff in the opening minutes by the time the end of the show came around. So I hung up.

Posted by: Knemon on June 8, 2005 10:32 AM

Where's ace? No after show appearance and no where to be seen the next day. Has he succumbed to his man-crush?

Posted by: on June 8, 2005 12:06 PM

He's recovering.
After that F-bomb he was savagely worked over by the non-Southpark Republicans.

Posted by: lauraw on June 8, 2005 12:16 PM

I think 'Rob and Amber's Wedding,' really wiped him out. Yesterday Karol found him playing and replaying his now fuzzy tape, curled up on his couch, ' surrounded by empty Hagen Daz containers and used tissues.

*red eyes, tears streaming down face*"...dress... so pretty.... so pretty... so pretty..."

Lucky they even got out a show.

Posted by: Jack Wilkie on June 8, 2005 12:57 PM

Caught the repeat a day late.

Good show, you guys. Heavy on the funny, good guests. I like the new mix a lot.

Posted by: Kadnine on June 8, 2005 01:11 PM

I think 'Rob and Amber's Wedding,' really wiped him out.

Heh.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
