Star Wars: The Television Series?

Every time I think I'm out, Lucas keeps pulling me back in.

The third item here has Lucas supposedly looking for cast members to star in his new SW TV series, to feature "all-new" characters. Thank goodness.

On the other hand, it's TV, which has a smaller budget, so expect less action and more of that wond'rous Lucas dialogue!

I'd sooner kiss a Wookie.

Thanks to OgreGunner.

Think "Ewoks: Quest for Endor" but on TV. Can you feel the excitement?

I'd sooner kiss a Wookie.

Wow, that could be a really dirty euphemism.

Perhaps on character he will focus. Powerful can be plot and character development, hmmm?

Posted by: planetmoron on June 2, 2005 01:02 PM

From what I understand, Lucas will just be producing the show, not directing. Producing is what he does best and I think there are plenty of good directors out there who would love to tackle this.

Suck does Lucas plot has become. Special effects, without TV series will fail.

Posted by: GregS on June 2, 2005 01:16 PM

I'm thinking a cantina-based sitcom, like Cheers but with the part of Cliff and Norm played by the walrus-faced alien and his partner.

Seriously, I am having a hard time picturing what sort of TV series would come out of Star Wars. Republic era or Empire? If it is some sort of Trek style show, what the hell is left for them to do? The heroes from the movie cleaned house, and I believe Lucas is staying away from doing anything involving post ROTJ due to book contracts, etc.

The Clone Wars cartoon shorts, directed by Tartakovsky, are very good.

IF Lucas is willing to give up all but an executive producer role, AND can find a good caliber directoral talent to direct, THEN this might be worth watching.

Posted by: vonKreedon on June 2, 2005 01:28 PM

Maybe they cab get this on HBO and Han Solo can talk like a smuggler actually might.

"Goddammit, Chewy, ya fuckin' hairball, quit yanking your pud and kick that converter in the ass or we're both space garbage!"

Posted by: spongeworthy on June 2, 2005 01:35 PM

FYI

Alex, it's supposed to take place between III and IV. As for directing, I keep hearing Kevin Smith will be involved. Take it for what it's worth.

Posted by: TheDude on June 2, 2005 01:43 PM

Eh, the Clone Wars Cartoon series was poorly drawn and quite frankly looked cheap. The stories were interesting, but the poor art was a major distraction.

If it was in anime style, now that's a whole different story.

Posted by: Iblis on June 2, 2005 02:24 PM

Iblis - Well, that's a matter of artistic taste. I like Tartakovsky's animation style a lot, and thought it was very effective in the Clone Wars shorts. OTOH, if the shorts had been drawn in anime style I probably wouldn't have given them the time needed to tell that the stories were good.

So, you likes what you likes and you don't what you don't, and so it goes.

Posted by: vonKreedon on June 2, 2005 02:40 PM

Unfortunately, it will probably follow in the footsteps of late Star Trek incarnations, as well as the Battlestar series remake, and be mostly about meetings.

Boring.

Posted by: SWLiP on June 2, 2005 02:50 PM

Von, point.
But for me the SW experience in a visual format has always been one of great detail. I didn't think Tartakovsky's style reflected that aspect of the SW form. It was like watching Dexter's Laboratory with more lasers. Definately better than Droids and the Ewok Adventures, but still not all it could be, of course IMHO.

Posted by: Iblis on June 2, 2005 02:51 PM

Yes, make it anime style.

Large-breasted, wide-eyed nubile 14 year old girls and rail-thin, effeminate males with ridiculous hair making comically exaggerated facial expressions and jumping thirty feet in the air for flying kung-fu sounds like something Star Wars really should try.

Posted by: brak on June 2, 2005 02:53 PM

SWLiP: Are you joking? The new Battlestar Galactica is the best show on TV. Seriously. If the new Star Wars series is, uh, half, as, good...

Posted by: someone on June 2, 2005 03:29 PM

The first episode is called Revenge of the Neocons, followed by The Repulican Menace. Take it for what you will.

Posted by: Son of George Lucas on June 2, 2005 03:33 PM

Brak, think in terms of the Ghost in The Shell series or Akira, not Pokeman.
Someone, BSG is good, but needs more spaceships and less story stalling philosophy. B5 at least gave you a climax to all the philosophical crap.

Posted by: Iblis on June 2, 2005 03:36 PM

I tried to watch the BSG premiere and turned it off after catching 5 minutes. I saw the scene where the butched-up Starbuck was sitting in her fighter screaming at her maintenance crew. Was that supposed to make her look tough? Heh, it made her look like a PMSing harpy. If that had been one bit realistic, the maintenance chief would have signaled his crew to stop working and told her, "Get your fat azz out of that cockpit and fix it your da** self, then." If he'd done THAT I'd still be watching!

If Ep III is an indication of what the TV SW will be, then it's going to be all anti-war PC nonsense. Remember Spielberg's SeaQuest? YAWN! The first season was all PC cuddliness, the second was monster movie silliness, and the third finally had some war and some meatiness (thanks to the addition of Michael Ironsides) but abruptly got cancelled thanks to the lack of story the previous 2 years. Will the Star Wars name be enough to keep this series afloat? Hmm, it wasn't enough for "Star Trek: Enterprise," which had maybe 6 good episodes before it got stale.

Later,
bbeck

Posted by: bbeck on June 2, 2005 03:50 PM

Iblis: Do you remember the first season of B5? Nothing happened! Until, maybe, the last episode. And then it wasn't clear what was going on.

BSG season 1 has so far (I'm only up to the current rerun cycle) given us more payoff than early-season B5. I'm more concerned that Moore will run out of ideas after another year or so.

Posted by: someone on June 2, 2005 04:21 PM

I think he should set the TV series after Episode VI. It can focus on the rebuilding/occupation of the Empire territories by the Rebel Alliance.

During restoration of the Jedi Temple, members of the occupational governing authority will inappropriately handle a lightsaber, causing outrage among the populace and making everyone question if the people are any better off than they were under the Emperor...

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
