Paul Krugman: Arrogant Douchebag

Daniel Okrent went far too easy on this lying liar who tells lying lies, but still, he's created a bit of a stir, and that's all for the good.

Okrent:

...I learned early on in this job that Prof. Krugman would likely be more willing to contribute to the Frist for President campaign than to acknowledge the possibility of error. When he says he agreed 'reluctantly' to one correction, he gives new meaning to the word 'reluctantly'; I can’t come up with an adverb sufficient to encompass his general attitude toward substantive criticism.

and

...I laid off for so long because I also believe that columnists are entitled by their mandate to engage in the unfair use of statistics, the misleading representation of opposing positions, and the conscious withholding of contrary data. But because they’re entitled doesn’t mean I or you have to like it, or think it’s good for the newspaper.

Don Luskin is in hog heaven, and he recaps some of Krugman's most egregious errors, deliberate distortions, and wholesale inventions.

Okrent seems like a pretty reasonable guy, and when you combine his characterization of PK with the frothing, bug-eyed lunatic who turns up on the talk circuit, you about have to conclude Krugman's got serious issues. Whether it's the death beams the Evil Rove has focused on his yarmulke or just a chemical imbalance, the guy snapped.

Put it this way: He may be a waste of even Luskin's time.

I wanna be Luskin when I grow up

That second comment is kind of weird. Columnists work for the newspaper; how do they get to be entitled to do things that are bad for it?

Posted by: Paul Zrimsek on June 1, 2005 03:54 PM

He's making a thin distinction between actual truth or accuracy and not-plainly-lying, which he thinks is the standard for columnists.

Posted by: ace on June 1, 2005 04:11 PM

It's the difference between telling the truth and telling the whole truth. If Krugman leaves out important information, it makes him not a lying sack of shit per se, just a partisan sack of shit.

But we already knew that.

Depends how you define bad, doesn't it? Bad like in not telling the truth = good if it hurts Bush.

Tried to go to the NYT weblog but too much traffic at the moment. Everybody wants to see Krugman get his ass reamed.

Posted by: on June 1, 2005 05:04 PM

Hmm. Is there such a thing as an acelanche?

Posted by: on June 1, 2005 05:31 PM

Krugman is an arrogant douchebag AND a giant Ewok.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on June 2, 2005 11:40 AM

And like an Ewok he should be the target of Imperial flamethrowers.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
