Could it be a ploy to keep the No votes sitting complacently at home on voting day? I seem to recall theories of that sort (from both parties) during our last Presidential election, but I don't remember hearing about how effective such tactics actually are (or aren't).

Somehow I feel that Europe will proceed much as it has for the last generation or so, and that 99.999% of its people will not notice any significant difference (not that life under socia!ist regimes is anything to write home about).

Interesting use of grossly over-the-top fear-mongering, though. Europeans seem to have lost their delicate touch in the propaganda department.

This and other articles keep saying Sarkozy "admitted" the vote was lost. Sarkozy privately opposed the EU constitution and only gave lukewarm public support to his party's pro-"yes" vote policy. Sarkozy represents the French nationalist wing of the ruling party and opposes ceding French liberty to the EUrocracy. He also is planning his own run for the presidency, and a defeat for Chirac and Raffarin only helps him.
