A Shock To No One But Liberals & the FBI: Letters Show Al-Qaeda Sought Anthrax Before 9-11

It's in he New York Times, yes; but I wonder what page of the print edition. I'm guessing it's hidden in a fold-out ad for a Macy's sale on flatware.

Al Qaeda operatives in Afghanistan began to assemble the equipment necessary to build a rudimentary biological weapons laboratory before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, letters released by the Defense Department show.

The operatives were not immediately able to obtain a sample of the deadly anthrax strain that they wanted to reproduce in their laboratory, according to the letters.

According to these letters. There certainly are many others not captured yet.

The letters are among the documents recovered in late 2001 after the invasion of Afghanistan that United States intelligence officials have frequently cited as evidence that Al Qaeda was working to develop biological weapons.

The letters, recently made public as a result of a Freedom of Information Act request, detail a visit by an unnamed Qaeda scientist to a laboratory at an unspecified location where he was shown "a special confidential room" with thousands of samples of biological substances.

The scientist tried to buy anthrax vaccines, which would be necessary to protect any Qaeda members working with the material. He also bought a sterilizer, a respirator and an air-contamination detector, one letter said.

"The conference was found to be highly beneficial for our future work," the letter said. "I finalized all the accessories required for the smooth running of our bioreactor."

A separate handwritten letter includes a detailed list of additional equipment that would be necessary, like an incubator and a centrifuge, as well as a crude layout of a four- or five-room laboratory.

The letter specifies a training program for the staff, lasting six to eight months for senior workers and two to four months for technicians.

The letters appear to be the same documents referred to in the report of a special presidential commission on intelligence failures and unconventional weapons led by former Senator Charles S. Robb of Virginia and Judge Laurence H. Silberman of the federal appeals court.

The report, released in March, describes a biological weapons program that "was extensive, well organized and operated two years before the Sept. 11."

None of this is proof, but it does suggest that, in legal terminology, the FBI had its head stuck all the way up its ass in insisting, from day one, that the anthrax attacks must have been a domestic lunatic posing as an Al Qaeda terrorist (who just happened to have his anthrax ready to be shipped on 9-11).

While I agree that the FBI has it's head up it's ass, simple logic tells us it wasn't Al Qaeda that did the 2001 Anthrax attacks.

Because the envelopes with advanced militarized anthrax had warnings.

Al Qaeda doesn't do warnings. To them, the perfect thing would be the letters was opened with an innocuous grade school message inside, the puff of dust and powder that seemed to disapear before hitting the floor - ignored by Daschle/Leahy Senate staff....then the wait until hundreds of staff and members of Congress began showing up dying and uncurable at various hospitals and the true mass panic started.

The two solutions are a domestic terrorist that never had a goal of killing many Americans, or a "friendly country" with advanced biowar capabilities eager to use an anthrax scare primarily to alert America of the danger and further manipulate America to go after Muslim countries, which would serve their national interests as well.

The FBI says it was likely a domestic terrorist - I don't have high confidence in them, but that does seem the most probable. The so-called "friendly countries" with advanced biowar capability that have shown themselves not adverse to using their covert intelligence operatives doing "wet" operations include Russia, China, N Korea, Israel, and France. And Israel and France both worked with the Ames Strain rather than the Vox strain the countries of the old Soviet Bloc worked with for biowar.

So, maybe one day we will know. The FBI may actually get it right. Domestic terrorist we already found and quietly neutralized rather than put up for trial and embarassment of the US biological defense establishment.....or we find out it was a false flag operation and the country involved has the clout to prevent disclosure to the American public and it remains a top state secret..

Posted by: Cedarford on May 21, 2005 01:58 PM

Actually, the FBI had reasons to think that the anthrax was a domestic action. My father was in the FBI as an anti-terror/WMD agent at the time, and while not directly involved in this case, did know people who were. They couldn't release why, for the same reason the police will not release facts in some cases, but there was evidence that this was domestic, not international.

"... it was a false flag operation and the country involved has the clout to prevent disclosure to the American public and it remains a top state secret.."

A conspiracy to attack the US with WMD's by a media-controlling ally? Wow, Cedarford, whom could you possibly mean?

Jackass.

Posted by: on May 21, 2005 02:08 PM

Oh, that was me, calling you a jackass, Cedarford. I need to identify myself or AIPAC won't send the check.

Posted by: See-Dubya on May 21, 2005 02:15 PM

I'm not sure why this is presented as a left-right issue. I don't doubt that al Qaeda is actively looking for opportunities to acquire WMDs of any kind; I can't think of a person I respect who doubts this. And I would be happier to find that the 2001(is this right, or was it 2002?) anthrax attacks were by alQaeda than that they were by domestic terrorists. Of course, what I'd most like to find out is that they were the work of a Ted Kazynski lunatic, which might contribute to that seeming the most likely to me.

Ok, to provide argument fodder I will point out that the article cited does nothing in the least to actually connect alQaeda to the attacks. To quote:

Two biological weapons experts who have read the letters said in interviews Friday that the letters suggested that the laboratory construction was at an early stage and that it would have most likely been at least two to three years, if not more, before the Qaeda team would have been able to produce enough anthrax to use as a weapon.

So the timing is all off for this lab building project to have become an anthrax production project that delivered anthrax. Also, were there tests of the anthrax for some sort of production signature? If so, does anyone know the results? I'm seriously asking, I don't know the answers, but the answers would rule somethings in/out wrt to were the anthrax was produced.

Another sort of chilling thing that I noticed in the article was that what they acquired/tried to acquire seemed to my non-Biochemist eye to be the things you'd need once you were about to acquire or perhaps HAD the pathogen.

I know this argues against myself from the last couple of paragraphs. That's just the way I am.

See-Dubya. Tsk, tsk, hypersensitivity. If you look at it objectively, you see 4 possibilities of who was behind the anthrax attacks:

1. The Far Left favors rogue elements of the official US Gov't, possibly going up to Karl Rove himself, purely to spread fear and legitimize the illegal Bush Presidency and take away precious Muslim civil liberties...

2. A domestic terrorist. Most likely.

3. Homicidal Muslims out to destroy us sent the letters with warnings inside to ensure few if any died. After that mercy, the Islamists have refrained from any other attacks on the infidels they wish to kill in mass numbers.

4. A false flag operation involving a foreign power with a sophisticated biowar program, an intelligence service that does overseas killings or other dangerous actions, and who sought to pin the attacks on the Muslims to provoke a US counterattack. Several countries meet that criteria.

***********************

Theories 1, 3 appear to collapse on logic. Theory 2 is the most plausible. But Theory 4 cannot be ruled out.

But See Dubya ignored I said a domestic terrorist was the probable culprit, and noticed of the nations I listed that one was The Country That IS Never to be Criticized. So he complained bitterly about That Country being on the list of nations capable of doing a cautionary anthrax attack.

Why is that, See-Dubya???

Posted by: Cedarford on May 21, 2005 10:34 PM

Well, mainly because I dislike you, Cedarford.

2 and 3 are not mutually exclusive, by the way. Last I heard they were looking at a Middle Eastern fellow as a possible suspect instead of Stephen Hatfill.

No, the country that should not exist, according to people like yourself.

If Israel didn't exist, you'd be one of the asshats comparing us Jews to filthy parasitic rats who are culturally incapable of having our own state, much like your hero did in that book he wrote.

But of course, now that we do have a nation, all of the son-of-bitches like yourself want to push us into the Mediterranean.

Cocksuckers can never be happy. Unless Jews die, that is.

Cedarford's stuff, when he isn't going all Princess Leia on us (Jew!), isn't bad. I rather suspect it was a domestic whackjob myself. I can't really see Al Qaeda wasting the invaluable first shots of an assassination attempt with warnings. Sure, it caused a lot of panic and screwed with the USPS, but they could have gotten all that and piles of dead staffers (if not the senators themselves) by not doing warnings. Smells to me like a lunatic who hoped that Al Qaeda would take the blame.

Incidentally, when Cedarford starts up with his "Zionist" stuff, I just mentally replace certain words, e.g. "Jewery" with "ninjas." Just a suggestion.

What do you think libs would have to say if the "undiclosed" location turned out to be Baghdad?

Whatever happened to Hatfill?

I asked earlier why this is being framed as a left-right issue and the quote above sheds light on the answer. It is being framed by the right as a left-right issue in part because the right is still desperately searching for WMDs that would justify the pre-OIF claims. Sorry, the WMDs weren't there and the administration knew it at the very least because the intel we gave to the UNSCOM/IAEA all turned out to be dry holes.

"...or a "friendly country" with advanced biowar capabilities eager to use an anthrax scare primarily to alert America of the danger and further manipulate America to go after Muslim countries, which would serve their national interests as well."

This demands notice.

Admittedly, this is classic Cedarford. However, he waits until the end of the FOURTH PARAGRAPH to spring it on us.

C'mon, C-ford! Don't bury the lede! I'm a busy man, and I don't have time to wade through endless reams of rational discourse before I get to that juicy anti-semitic goodness! Please, give your fans what they want -- whacko groundless speculations about shadowy Zionist conspiracies behind every tragedy -- without the chaff.

Plus, I think you're getting too fancy. Far be it from me to criticize the past master at untermensch -bashing, but subtlety does not become you. No more of these veiled references to "friendly countries!" Don't swaddle your true foe by suggesting that Russia or France might be behind these crimes! Come on out and tell us the real villians.

In fact, the kids watching at home can help us. Say it with me now:

"It was the JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS!!!"

Brought to you by the letters N and F, and the number 6,000,000.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
