MSM Washington Press Corps: How Dare The White House Suggest We Verify Claims Before Publishing!

What a lot of nerve, huh?

The press can't have it both ways. They cannot simultaneously claim that they are to be trusted due to their (I get sick of writing this) multiple layers of painstaking editorial fact-checking and then get all outraged when anyone dares to suggest that maybe they ought to actually put their stories through those self-same multiple layers of painstaking editorial fact-checking.

If you don't want to check your facts, fine. But then stop claiming you can be trusted based on double-checking and double-sourcing claims.

One or the other, guys.

I know that you're liberals, and thus creatures of inconsistency and different rules for different people at different times under different circumstances (such rule-changes always favoring yourselves and your preferred political stances), but I'm afraid we're going to have to insist on this point.

Whitehouse: how dare you suggest we verify claims before going to war in Iraq!

Posted by: on May 18, 2005 11:19 AM

...

Shut up, May.

Posted by: Megan on May 18, 2005 11:39 AM

Yes Ace, some are more equal than others. In other news, pigs have begun walking on two legs.

Posted by: kbiel on May 18, 2005 11:52 AM

May: the black helicopters have been dispatched. Resistance is futile.

Posted by: Karl Rove on May 18, 2005 11:55 AM

That's "at May", dumb-asses. Can't you even fucking read?

Whitehouse: how dare you suggest we verify claims before going to war in Iraq!

The hypocrisy is delicioius!

Posted by: on May 18, 2005 12:04 PM

May, its just too bad that 'fake but accurate' doesn't work for Republicans.

Posted by: lauraw on May 18, 2005 12:09 PM

Verify claims with who? Other countries perhaps? Previous administrations, maybe?

Sure, none of that happened. Whatever.

Posted by: Jason on May 18, 2005 12:12 PM

colon, you ignorant slut.

Should we perhaps verify claims of WMDs with the Syrians, seeing as they now have Saddam's stockpiles. Or with the dead Kurds who were gassed? Maybe we could have just asked Saddam about the several tons of WMD munitions that we have found in Iraq (but maybe that's not quite enough for you, huh? you want a bunker FULL of WMDs, right?) Or perhaps we can simply ignore the omnipresent capability of the regime to produce chem weapons in very short order.

Newsweek COUNLD check "sources," assmunch.

It's a little harder to verify state secrets of a hostile nation.

The moral equivalence is phenomenal!

Posted by: hobgoblin on May 18, 2005 12:12 PM

Ahem. Thanks to--well, me--for alerting Ace to this story. No doubt he was so choked with outrage that he neglected to mention that when he posted.

I'm a little surprised to see that anyone's bothering to debate with May, aka colon, aka "I'm too lame to think up a pseudonym." We all know the "Bush Lied!!!" claim is horseshit; we all know it's been rebutted time and again; we all know that doesn't make any difference to folks like May in the reality-challenged community. Personally, I'd rather argue theology with a Jehovah's Witness.

Posted by: utron on May 18, 2005 12:26 PM

May, or whatever, your problem, see, is that not only can we read, but we DO. Your "hypocrisy" claim doesn't hold water with those of us who can process information more complex than can fit on a "KERRY/EDWARDS: For a STRONGER America" or "BUSH=HITLER" bumper sticker.

Posted by: Rocketeer67 on May 18, 2005 12:29 PM

That link is hysterical.

Q With respect, who made you the editor of Newsweek? Do you think it's appropriate for you, at that podium, speaking with the authority of the President of the United States, to tell an American magazine what they should print?

MR. McCLELLAN: I'm not telling them. I'm saying that we would encourage them to help --

Q You're pressuring them.

MR. McCLELLAN: No, I'm saying that we would encourage them --

Q It's not pressure?

MR. McCLELLAN: Look, this report caused serious damage to the image of the United States abroad....(blah blah)

Q Are you asking them to write a story about how great the American military is; is that what you're saying here?

THE HORROR!
Sorry for the accidental unfinished post above.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
