BREAKING: TRUMP TO TAKE OVER WTC DESIGN/CONSTRUCTION; WILL REBUILD OLD TOWERS -- FIVE STORIES TALLER (???)

Major Caveat/Correction: See below.

I love it when a good plan comes together.

I was just talking about this in the pre-interview with Deroy Murdock-- or at least about the then-dormant plans for the Twin Towers Two design.

Ogre Gunner just tipped me that Donald Trump announced on Hannity's show that he'll be taking over the building of the new WTC.

This is second-hand, obviously. I can't confirm it. But it's great news if true-- which I assume it is, because Ogre Gunner is a pretty good tipster.

Kismet-- because we were definitely going to hit this with Deroy Murdock tomorrow. Now we'll have a bit more to talk about on it.

Unconfirmed Update: I've only got one anonymous source, but if it works for Al-Newsweek, I don't see why it doesn't work for me.

Ogre Gunner says that Trump will be making the official announcement 10 or 10:30 Wednesday morning.

He also provides this link to to the Twin Towers II plans I mentioned above.

Glorious. F'n' glorious.

Correction/Caveat: Sean Hannity's website forums do not mention this.

I am informed by readers who heard the show that Trump was not the caller, but rather someone involved in trying to bring back the real Twin Towers. It's sketchy, but the impression I get is that this person claims that Trump will be taking over design/construction... or at least believes he will offer himself up to do so.

It's not a done deal yet, it seems. It may not even be an almost done deal.

I hate donald trump. Almost as much as I hate joe rogan.

Ef them. Ef them both.

Posted by: fat kid on May 16, 2005 05:52 PM

I hate the word "kismet".

Posted by: Bob on May 16, 2005 06:08 PM

I seriously hope this isn't some sick joke. I'd hate to get my hopes up that I would be able to go to the observation deck for the first time.

My trust is with you Ace....

Posted by: Chad on May 16, 2005 06:09 PM

He can make the architectural and contrac bids into a reality show, and put a casino at the top.

If this is true, at least it's someone that will get it done

KEWELLLL!

(and I hate that spelling)

If this is true, at least it's someone that will get it done

Yep. I don't really have strong feelings one way or the other about Mr. Trump, but even if I hated his guts, even if I hated him as much as I hate the word "kismet", I'd still be rooting for him to get this project. He's one of the few people that can save us from these pathetic, tinkly-glass, short, memorial towers. Putting up real fucking buildings, higher than ever, is the way to do it.

pathetic, tinkly-glass, short, memorial towers

Best. description. ever.

Posted by: rdbrewer on May 16, 2005 06:20 PM

If someone sees this reported anywhere else, please post a link. I'm not saying I don't trust Ace, but sometimes it's nice to get things confirmed in the non-shadow media.

Posted by: Bob on May 16, 2005 06:22 PM

I'm with fatty - not a big Trump fan. He will make it all about TRUMP. But I do like his idea of rebuilding the towers and making them taller. I hope he doesn't name the The Trump Twin Towers

Posted by: tinkerbelle on May 16, 2005 06:24 PM

Sure this isn't a hoax?

Would be funny if this is the thing offered to Kendra on Thursday though.

Posted by: someone on May 16, 2005 06:32 PM

Donald Trump announced on Hannity's show that he'll be taking over the building of the new WTC

Is this new news, or a distorted echo of this story (Trump on Hannity saying the WTC should be rebuilt)?

Posted by: Minoru Yamasaki's cock on May 16, 2005 06:35 PM

Trump will play it straight. And, anyway, Trump seems very representative of NYC spirit--an ousider's viewpoint. The city seems independent, cocky, proud, narcissistic, and tough--simultaneously annoying, repellant, attractive, and wonderful.

Trump kicks ass and takes names. He's perfect for the job.

Posted by: rdbrewer on May 16, 2005 06:37 PM

I'm guessing this is a misheard version of Trump on Hannity's show last Thursday.

Posted by: jack on May 16, 2005 06:38 PM

It wasn't Trump on the radio, it was an associate linked to the www.MakeNYNYagain.com site.

Posted by: Iblis on May 16, 2005 06:58 PM

If anyone is a Hannity insider member they can DL today's show for free and find out.

Posted by: somebody on May 16, 2005 07:00 PM

Ever since I read his biographies I've never liked the Donald. He's an immature, shallow, self-aggrandizing braggart who started with 40 million of his daddy's money. Who couldn't make money with a start like that? And has also managed to lose quite a pile over the years. He did do one bold thing though, he bought property on the west side when everyone thought NYC was finished and it shyrocketed when the city came back.

But I do like the idea of rebuilding the WTC bigger as I said we must do on 911.

Posted by: 72V on May 16, 2005 07:05 PM

I find Donald to be a monumental ass. I'm surprised even NYC can contain his humongous head. Along with the previously mentioned fact that he started with Daddy's money, I can't stand him b/c he'll declare bankruptcy at the drop of a hat, knowing it won't hurt him at all. I realize he is just playing the system, but it shows a distinct lack of scruples to go into a venture knowing he can pull the cord on that parachute. That said, I watch the prick's show every week 'cause I love to watch the jr egos tear each other apart. I also think he would be perfect for the Towers b/c he could get things moving and, judging by his previous projects, he knows what's ugly as hairy ass and won't build it.

Posted by: TheDude on May 16, 2005 07:14 PM

Doubt this is happening. Checked on Hannity's Web site forums and "Trump" comes up blank.

I would suspect that if this were true, the reaction there would be similar to what I'm seeing here.

As much as I despise the short-fingered vulgarian (ah, Spy!), I still think this would be a damm great story. A finger in the eye of every Noo Yawk hater and Islamofascist.

Posted by: Bill Peschel on May 16, 2005 07:15 PM

I heard the radio show and someone he knows who is also involved with the project did call in in this regard. It is supposed to breaking on the networks by now, or later tonight. However, I don't think this is a done deal. Maybe just that Trump has an architect, a building design and a plan.

It would need formal approval. He did re-build the ice skating rink in NYC after years of neglect, so I think this is a similar deal. Only I suspect Trump would make some bucks - though he'd probably do it for the press. But it isn't going to be easy to wrestle this one away from the politicians.

Posted by: Dan on May 16, 2005 07:21 PM

I just caught the last few seconds of his show, and one of the callers said something along the lines of "God bless Donald Trump".

But it's true: there is nothing on SH's website forums.

Posted by: djc on May 16, 2005 07:22 PM

Well this is still more believable than Al-Newsweak's latest crap.

Posted by: Rhylos on May 16, 2005 07:32 PM

Thanks for keeping me honest. It seems that Ogre Gunner might not have heard what he thought he heard.

I added the caveat/correction as suggested by those posting here.

They'll probably even have those new chemical laser cannons on the roof. (Bringing a couple of megawatts to bear on a four inch circle.) (Note to Pentagon: Just call them phasers already. Geez.)

Actually, real estate developers are typically a sleazy bunch, but Trump is the creme de la creme of sleaze. Literally, one simply cannot get dirtier than this guy. Which makes his show all the more retarded. I mean seriously, any one of us sniveling idiots could win that thing - it's a friggin joke.
Posted by: fat kid on May 16, 2005 08:52 PM

Of course he's a sleazeball - but he's a successful sleazeball who gets shit done. I loathe the man but I'd still give the contract to him in a heartbeat.

O/T -

Ace, are you keeping up with this?

Galloway arrives in Washington

"I have no expectation of justice from a group of Christian fundamentalist and Zionist activists under the chairmanship of a neocon (President) George Bush who is pro-war," Galloway told Reuters on his arrival in the United States.

"I come not as the accused but as the accuser," he added.

(Last line in my post above should've been in italics as well; it was, obviously, from the same article. But can you believe the sheer brazen gall of this fucking assclown?)

Posted by: Megan on May 16, 2005 09:14 PM

Looooooose shit, ACE.

NYC is still losing ground as a global financial center to Asia and Europe and other American Sites. Goldman Sachs just pulled out of a project to build a multi-billion center adjoining what is now the WTC Pit - deciding instead to split up operations between Mid-Town MAnhattan and NJ. Long-term WTC tenants have mostly signed long-term leases elsewhere.

Trump can blow smoke for all the free PR he can harvest, but the sorry fact is few potential tenants want to move in to a Bigger and Better World Target Center.

Without serious incentives to draw in tenants, few want to do so out of the kindness of their hearts, especially since China's gutting of our industries and overconstruction has created plenty of surplus office space elsewhere eagerly pleading with the fatcats to moveinto their white elephants. Our deficit-riddled country, NY State, and NYC lack the ability to get those incentives without our Chinese and Japanese banker's say so.

Two weeks after 9/11, work on the Pentagon had already started. Back then we had a surplus of Patriotic feeling in the country towards NYC - no Red&Blue State thinking, and a surplus of Federal money to help NYC and probably could have made rebuilding the WTC a national objective.

But that moment in time was lost and squandered in the Victim's Family Mournathon & Empowerment over Rebuilding Plans, and other turf wars.

The WTC Pit will be a Pit for a long, long time to come. If another attack happens in the interim, rebuilding will diminish further as a national priority.

And - Already America's political and business leadership are heeding what happened to the WTC moving in a direction away from over-concentration of America's most critical infrastructure in one place.

Posted by: Cedarford on May 16, 2005 09:47 PM

"...overconstruction has created plenty of surplus office space elsewhere..."

What the fuck are you talking about? The US (and NYC) are in the middle of a real estate boom. Prices have been increasing steadily for years.

Jeez, what a maroon.

Posted by: Dogstar on May 16, 2005 10:15 PM

Don't you have a a Bible to pound for "Terri", Dogstar?

You are equally clueless on NYC Metro's glut of business office space, especially in lower Manhattan.

Or even knowing the WTC, when it existed, had great difficulty in finding willing tenants?

Stick to the things that you can at least lie about plausably to other Gomer-ic RTL'rs, and sucker them in...

"I HAVE 4 AFFIDAVITS OF NURSES SWEARING ABUSE!! I POSTED THEM EVERYWHERE!!"

Posted by: Cedarford on May 16, 2005 11:01 PM

The fact that the real estate market is in a boom in NYC is one of the reasons the Port Authority and Silverstine have been pushing for something to be built ASAP. Why do you think Trump and everyone else has started making noise again?
Large Towers are going up around the world, in Singapore, Hong Kong etc. So companies will come.
Despite defeatists like Cedafreak.

Posted by: Iblis on May 16, 2005 11:14 PM

Ace, don't you feel uneasy about rushing into print with such a sketchy, unconfirmed blog post? What if it inflames urban green space enviros to go on a violent rioting binge?

Posted by: The Sanity Inspector on May 16, 2005 11:15 PM

>I hate to have to tell you rdbrewer, but the geek off was last week.

Oh, well, I win, then.

Posted by: rdbrewer on May 16, 2005 11:23 PM

"...NYC Metro's glut of business office space, especially in lower Manhattan..."

The four words Cedartard dreads hearing, more than anything else:

Dude, got a cite?

Posted by: Dogstar on May 17, 2005 12:31 AM

Iblis -

They have started making noise again because the whole Freedom Tower design got tossed, the Tunnel work is botched, lawsuits still multiply, and people are concluding they will be living with The Pit for a long time.

Even in the peak Go-Go years on Wall Street under Reagan and Clinton, the WTC had considerable difficulty finding tenants. After 9/11, companies also fear concentrating their major assets in one just locale.

With growing fear about compassion fatigue NYC after the country gave so generously and the money was largely spent on everything but reconstruction....it will be difficult for Chuckie Schumer and next Gov Elliot Spitzer to demand another special NYC deal in massive money-giving to do the WTC site and lure in tenants with taxpayer subsidies.

But it's a great time for Donald Trump to garnish massive publicity for himself if he chooses to come in and blow smoke around..He has no interest in dealing with the Port Authority, Libeskand, The Greatest Victims & Heroes Families Ever, and a dozen other special interest groups..

Manhattan Market Overview 1Q 2005

"For the first time in this report series, dating back to 1989, prices in all categories set records and saw double-digit gains over the prior quarter. The driving factors include a continued constraint on inventory, the effects of the 10-15% average increase in bonus income in the financial services sector over the past year, general improvement in payroll and employment levels and perhaps, most importantly, concern over the anticipated rise in mortgage rates."

http://www.cushmanwakefield.com/flyers/NYMidtownSouthOFF_1Q05.pdf

"After a turn-around year in 2004, the Midtown South market continued to perform well in the first quarter. The overall vacancy rate finished the quarter below 10%, down significantly from its mid-2003 high of 14.5%."

http://www.cushmanwakefield.com/flyers/NYMidtownOFF_1Q05.pdf

"With four leasing transactions exceeding 100,000 square feet and vacancy rates at its lowest level in three years, the Midtown office market started the new year on a positive note. The overall vacancy rate fell to 9.8%, a two percentage point decrease from one year ago."

Posted by: fat kid on May 17, 2005 01:15 AM

Dogstar,

That thing is resistant to facts and logic and really should be starved instead.
-but, good one!

Posted by: lauraw on May 17, 2005 08:45 AM

There is no glut of downtown office space, but a lot of office buildings down here are being converted to residential. There are other new residential towers going up also.

Silversteins 7WTC has no long-term tenants yet even though it's supposedly state-of-the-art (though that may be because it's priced like it. He's asking prices like you see in Midtown Class A properties. Thing is, he should be getting it.)

I'm afraid a rebuilt WTC would glut the market, and those towers standing empty would be the worst of all worlds, hemorraging money and making us look like cowards at the same time.

Here is a link to confirm Ace's blog report on Trump.

http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/46663.htm

Newsmax is running a story about Trump taking over the towers project.

Posted by: Mark_D on May 17, 2005 11:34 AM

And Glenn Beck is talking about it on his radio show as I type.

Posted by: Mark_D on May 17, 2005 11:40 AM

Spongeworthy -

Yes, WTC#7 sits empty. Yes Goldman Sachs bailed on building a 3 billion Headquarters center adjoining the WTC Pit.

So things already look bad. Some want to wave their pom-poms and say someone else should move in "To Show the Evildoers how great New Yorkers are." But NYC's moment of national love has passed, and New Yorkers showed they were more interested in politics, being Drama Queen Noble Victims, and making money suing folks for 9/11 than they were interested in rebuilding.

With a war on, plus the Pit proclaimed as a sacred cemetery by the Victim's Families, there is likely even Less of a market for New and Bigger Trade Towers sited in the Pit than for WTC#7 or new major office complexes on the periphery of the Pit.
