Neologism of the Day

Over at NRO's The Corner, Warren Bell complains about the term "the blogosphere," stating he'll never write it again, and asking for an alternative.

Meanwhile, I've had a similar problem. "Blogosphere" strictly refers only to blogs proper -- i.e., not Druge, not MRC, not FreeRepublic, not TownHall, etc. -- and yet I often wish to refer to the entirety of the internet-based media. Or the alternative media generally. And yet "alternative media" sounds sort of stupid to me. It conjures up images of Morrissey from the Smiths hosting a PBS news program, or a media-criticism show featuring the percussion section of The Waterboys.

I've tried my own coinage -- "Young Media" -- but no one seemed to like that very much.

Reading through Brian Anderson's excellent and fun South Park Conservatives, I found a quote by John Fund that may offer an acceptable term:

For John Fund, the best blogs and news and opinion sites are "building a shadow media infrastructure that will become an significant component of the media in the twenty-first century."

The Shadow Media. That is what this is, after all, isn't it? Not the actual media, but its dark doppleganger, waiting to take its place when the time is right.

So, there you go, Warren. The Shadow Media.

Cost to you: nada. Well, a link would be nice, pal.

PS... Brian Anderson will be discussing media bias, and perhaps why Cartman's mom is such a dirty whore, on this Tuesday's Hoist the Black Flag webcast show.

He'll be joined by a second guest of such importance and excitement that... well, so important and exciting that we haven't been able to book him or her yet.

It'll be someone. I think. Either that, or Karol and I will just pad the ending of the the show by discussing what the hell happened to Billy Squier and the Greg Kihn Band.

PPS: We still need a replacement for the too-cutesy "fisking."

E-buttal?

Probably best to have kept my stupid mouth shut.

Actually, Greg Kihn is a local radio personality in Silicon Valley..and a pretty easygoing guy. You might try calling him up and asking him to be on the show. After all, he does a variety of charity events.......

Posted by: cthulhu on May 16, 2005 03:11 AM

Someone. But not me.

Posted by: someone on May 16, 2005 03:49 AM

e-buttal? Um....

I actually quite like the term "fisking." On the other hand, I hate "blogosphere." Actually, I hate the word "blog" as well. It's such a silly word. Sounds like something you'd be doing in the bathroom whilst battling food poisoning.

Posted by: knayte on May 16, 2005 03:52 AM

I'm kind of partial to replacing "fisking" with the more colorful "shithammering" myself.

I don't know. I don't do this for a living.

Posted by: Alex_fs on May 16, 2005 04:10 AM

Crap. I thought you were Brian C. Anderson.

Oh well.

Maybe you are, and you will be doing some Senor Wences-like fast talkin' on the show. 'Sallright? 'Sallright.

Posted by: See-Dubya on May 16, 2005 04:50 AM

Ah ha. Got it.

Posted by: See-Dub on May 16, 2005 06:30 AM

Shadow media? Yeah, right.

Doesn't work, Ace. You need a single word, or a word that can be easily switched to a simply acronym, like MSM.

I fear that blogosphere is here to say.

Then again, if we want to change the name, perhaps we can get Fox to call it "homicide media"?

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

What to call the blogoshpere, besides "blogosphere". I'll submit two ideas:

#1. BOB -- it's simply easy to type and has that humorous je n'cest pas twist to it.

#2. THE PAJAMA PRESS -- Speaks for itself.

Posted by: Danny Carlton on May 16, 2005 07:21 AM

I am partial to the more descriptive, yet elegant, "evisceration."

Posted by: gail on May 16, 2005 08:18 AM

"what the hell happened to Billy Squier(?)"

Don't know what happened, but I do know why it happened.

Shadow Media sounds kind of ominous.

It obviously wouldn't apply to all blogs, but what we're seeing is a new Reformation, this time not of the church but of the media. We are witnessing the dominant power losing their control of information and their ability to pre-interpret that information for the public.

Posted by: OCBill on May 16, 2005 09:28 AM

shit

Posted by: rdbrewer on May 16, 2005 09:29 AM

I've always liked "fisking". Partly because it refers to a specific person, with major negative connotations. And partly because it's one consonant off from a deviant sex act.

Posted by: Beck on May 16, 2005 09:44 AM

I use and I like blogsphere (without the "o"). Don't see any need to come up with or use something else.

Posted by: Alessandra on May 16, 2005 10:33 AM

"Fisking" makes my skin crawl. No matter what Sullivan says, it was intended to invoke "fisting", a fetish that creeps me out big-time (even if hot lesbians do it I look away). I especially don't like it when people who obviously feel the same way as I do throw it around. How do you get around the fact that it implies a violent and damaging sexual violation? Isn't that what you're saying if you write I "fisked" or Kaus "fisked" Paul Krugman? Nails on a freakin' chalkboard.

I like 'blogosphere.' But for when you want to lump everybody - - blogs and non-blogs -- together, how about The Internet News Media-

The IN media.

Posted by: lauraw on May 16, 2005 11:50 AM

The Shadow Media sounds so, well shadowy, kind of like your logo ACE. lauraw is right:

I like 'blogosphere.' ... how about The Internet News Media-

I hate the word "blog." Sounds like a cold and flu symptom. "Yeah, I got the blogs. Sniffling and sneezing. Runny nose." Who the hell thought up "business log" anyway? It's more of a media or news log. "Mogs" or "Nogs."

Posted by: Charles Varvil on May 16, 2005 12:30 PM

rdbrewer, I think blog is supposed to be a shortening of 'weblog.'

Posted by: lauraw on May 16, 2005 01:22 PM

Young Media? That's all you could come up with, Ace? Young Media?

I was thinking along the lines of "Young, Supple, Easily-Plied-With-Alcohol, Nubile Media" would be something you'd come up with.

Posted by: kelly on May 16, 2005 04:42 PM

kelly :-)

for Ace it would be Not So Young Media ;-)

Posted by: Alessandra on May 16, 2005 05:23 PM

"fisk" is how one pronounces "fsck" - as in "resolving UFS file system inconsistencies", for example. I could not believe the enlightened geekitude of blogdom when I found this term in use. Alas, yet another long-held acronym (well, phonetically, anyway) of UN*X has absquatulated. Look it up. Fsck, I mean. The parallels of fscking a filesystem and fisking someones bloggerel (q.v. doggerel) are surprisingly analogous. Except, with an inconsistent filesystem, you can REPAIR or REPLACE the jiggly bits. I suppose to the user community that the outage required to repair the filesystem might border on the obscene... "I even look away when I see two hot systems admins fscking each other's servers" but dammit, sometimes this sort of activity needs to be brought out into view. Even if it is scheduled for 2AM.

An NRO Corner-lanche for this post, nice

Posted by: brak on May 18, 2005 02:14 PM

Ace, I love it.

So, who is going to invent the emblem and html code to place it on the sidebars of blogs everywhere?

"Proud member of The Shadow Media" -- yep, it would look sweet I think.
