Kennedy Sought To Abolish Filibuster in 1995

...along with various other Democratic, err, luminaries.

Of course there's been flip-flopping on the issue by both sides; procedures aren't substance, and people will change their favored procedures in order to obtain the substantive outcome they desire. Happens all the time.

But there has been a great deal more flip-flopping on this issue by Democrats. The media loves to repeat the Democratic talking points that many Clinton nominees were "bottled up" by the Republican-controlled Senate, that vague language nicely avoiding specifying how many nominees had actually been filibustered.

Were nominees blocked? Yes, but here's the distinction the media seems unable to appreciate: The Republicans were the majority party in the Senate at that time (as they are now). The liberal MSM just doesn't seem to get it that the majority should be allowed to win in such contests, being, you know, the majority and everything.

And the media doesn't seem to note that most of the Clinton nominees held up by Republicans were held up in the closing year of his presidency. As can be expected-- no one wants to allow a departing president to pack the courts with judges as he's on his way out the door.

On the other hand, the Democrats began systematically blocking Bush's nominees from early in his first term.

Unless the filibuster is killed, it will only get worse from here.

some in the media have commented that the Democrats won the semantic war by labeling the so-called "nuclear option" --- it frames the issue and makes Republicans look bad for simply eliminating this cocksucker nonsense

yet I read today that friggin' moron Trent Lott is the person that coined the phrase. thank God this jackass was removed from his leadership post. with "friends" like these

The RNC should run ads with video clips of all the times in the past that Democrats said that nominees deserve an up or down vote.

Sci-Fi'er Orson Scott Card takes on the 'nuke option' in a nice little piece (found via Bench Memos). Does a good job laying it out and agrees wholeheartedly with Ace re: the media spinning, how crucial it is. Thought others here might like.

Sorry, here's a link that should work.

I would like to see Frist lower the threshold to a number greater than 50. Say, 55. That would really make things interesting.

Especially if the language of the act references Mondale's previous lowering of the threshold from 67 to 60.

I really don't think the Republicans want to go here, do they? It's only a matter of time before they are the minority, bitching and yelling about how the "times have changed" and how it's "time to bring back the fillibuster on judicial nominees". Y'all just wait and see... if you get your way, you'll be sorry in the end. I *will* grant you this though - the Democrats are totally abusing the privilege of the fillibuster, to the point that it's getting rather rediculous. But hey - stop tossing far-right wing extremists into the circle and maybe you won't see what you've been seeing lately.

Y'all wanted Alberto Gonzales to be a SCOTUS nominee and now the fooker wants all of your asses IMPRISONED for looking at porn:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2005-05-04-bush-obscenity_x.htm

If you want MORE of this shit, just keep on talkin' "Nuclear Option" and I'll see the rest of y'all in prison someday. It's inevitable.

The MSM isn't the only bunch that doesn't get it that the majority should be allowed to win such contests...

The Republicans don't seem to get it either.

I had allways thought that a filibuster was the last tool of an honest man trying to block a pork-laden law. Thanks, Democrats, for setting me straight. Now I know that a filibuster is simply petulant whining and useless carping. It's a good thing nobody found out about this little loophole, or we might have gotten something done.

Sorry. Bad comma usage. I'll be hiding from my English teacher, a mean woman who lives just down the road.

Posted by: pinky on May 15, 2005 11:50 PM

Ace: it's far worse. Bush actually renominated some Clintonites in order to try to "improve relations". Of course he was suckered as badly as Euros dealing with Iran...

I can't f'n stop:

Nominations sit,
Neglected by comittees.
Judge? No up; no down.

Split fillibuster?
The way forward: nuclear.
Majority rules!
