Cal Thomas Just Doesn't Get ItI don't like sactimony about the ethics and importance of journalists coming from conservative pundits any more than I like it from liberal ones. Does this guy have anything to say? Seriously. If he's said anything interesting the past 20 years, I'd like to know about it. posted by Ace at 05:09 PM
CommentsWhat, you expect him to be a fashionplate, a damned sexy man, AND always agree with you? Its the shirtcollars he wears, and the way he tilts his head when he poses for pictures...sigh. Posted by: lauraw on May 12, 2005 05:22 PM
what a dick. Posted by: bostonirish on May 12, 2005 05:34 PM

I could have finished my day without seeing a Cal Thomas Glamour Shot. Photographer: "Okay, look pensive, but also...stupid. Perfect!" Posted by: Hubris on May 12, 2005 06:00 PM
His cable show (I think it's "After Hours") is hilarious. It's like an old SNL parody. Posted by: John from WuzzaDem on May 12, 2005 06:20 PM
He criticized "blogs like The Huffington Post." Is Ace of Spades HQ (and the associated Ace of Spades LifeStyle (TM) ) like The Huffinton Post? NO!!! Posted by: on May 12, 2005 06:30 PM
The best thing about his show: those awful cartoon re-enactments.. Shit, I've heard better voice-overs from highschool interns.. It fugures that a guy who hates blogs thinks reading political cartoons aloud is tha bees knees.. Posted by: Hans on May 12, 2005 07:08 PM
Donosaurs always scream when the asteroid hits. OTOH, if ol' Cal were to make that a *pencil* mustache, he'd be oh-so-retro! Spats, man spats!! Posted by: Claire on May 12, 2005 09:59 PM
I don't see it quite the same way - as he points out, much of the press is more experienced than bloggers, he mainly goes after Huffington, then says this: "Blogs have their place. They played an important role in the last presidential election by contributing to the debate over John Kerry's experience in Vietnam and George Bush's National Guard records." To me, it was more a bitch about Huffington and Greta Van Sustern's latest crime spree passing as journalism. Posted by: Dan on May 12, 2005 10:39 PM
Thomas is like Dowd, IMO. All nails on the chalkboard and so fundamentally lacking in substance that it hurts to read it. Posted by: carla on May 12, 2005 10:39 PM
I'm surprised the old gas bag didn't fault blogs for not walking ten miles to school every day through howling snow storms, just like he had to when he was a young'n. Posted by: Mickey Blue Balls on May 12, 2005 11:23 PM
The majority of the MSM are just media snobs who are out of date and will be left with their ink stained fingers of old news as their viewers realize they know more about the story then these hosts. Posted by: LifeTrek on May 13, 2005 01:13 AM
Cal Thomas has always been a pompous ass, for at least the past 20 years if not longer. I have been seeing his face on op-ed pages of varous newspapers for at least that long, and I can't remember any time when I was moved to change my mind about his pompous assness. Posted by: Yehudit on May 13, 2005 06:08 AM
I don't watch the show, and I don't know much about him, but he's a regular at Townhall, and most of the time I at least skim the new articles there. Haven't read the linked article yet, but most of his other stuff is decent. No huge insights, mind, but that's what townhall usually is -- the occasional Mike Adams (hilarious!), then a bunch of short discussions of conservative issues (e.g. judicial activism) followed by a lot of "me too" similar discussions. He's often one of the "me too"s, but he's never seemed like a pompous ass that I can recall. Some of them, mostly women, can be overly anti-libretarian -- SAVE OUR CHILDREN FROM THIS FILTH!!!!!111! -- but I don't remember Cal ever being guilty of anything like that. I think a lot of old folks just don't "get" it, and I don't hold it against them. Their way will die off soon enough. They'll be among the plummetting newspaper readership until the paper goes away or they do. I don't begrudge them that. Posted by: James on May 13, 2005 08:16 AM
Don't be so quick to dump on Cal Thomas. Before most of us were even thinking blog, he was blowing the whistle on the Left. And his column mostly takes issue with Huffington, so why the personal angst? And besides, he makes a good point. Without professional journalists/MSM, much of the blogosphere would have little to write about. How many of us actually do the hard investigative work that the journalists we then nitpick to smithereens (many deservedly so) do for us? Without them, where would most of us be? Okay, you people have convinced me: Ace of Spades, HQ = The Huffington Post ace = Arianna Which of course, also means: Ace of Spade, HQ = Democratic Underground And, you're all Kos Kids!
