A League of Their Own: Iraqi Women Join Softball Leagues

Previously outlawed by Saddam Hussein as a slow-pitch salient of "US Imperialism," Iraqi women have joined six teams to compete at softball. And they're risking more that scraped knees:

The women must run a daily gauntlet of car bombings and shootings to turn up for training.

"Because of the heat, we must train early in the morning or late in the evening. For the girls, those are dangerous times. They can be kidnapped or killed," said their trainer Ismail Khalil, who also heads the national baseball federation.

To reassure the families, the federation has provided buses to ferry the players to and from their practice sessions.

But Zikra Jasim, 20, considered the best player and who wears a veil while playing, said: "Our parents are worried even if things have improved because of the buses.

Teammate Tariq added: "I'm afraid the girls will lose heart if something happens to one of them."

That article is from Aljazeera.net, by the way.

This kind of American cultural imperialist must really enrage the Left. Iraqi women playing softball — what's next, extended trips to the shopping mall? Shouldn't they be expressing their multicultural diversity by cowering in a corner of the kitchen?

"Wait! When coach touches her left arm once then her veil twice does that mean steal or slap bunt? Dammit!"

Seriously, good for them. Hopefully more brave and civilized people will begin to do the things they want until the reality of mass murder / suicide bombings are washed from their lives.

Yeah, and how will they pick up breaking balls and sliders if they're wearing veils.

Jeez think of the catchers!

First the women learn to read in Afghanistan. Now, they're playing softball in Iraq. I do not think that we can appreciate the incredible bravery it takes to do such a thing when extremist (and maybe mainstream as we are taking about the world of Islam) elements exist.

The headline is funny and even a bit bizarre, but those women are truly taking their lives in their hands to do something we women in this country take for granted every moment of every day.

No matter what bullsh!t we spew here or elsewhere, we are very unlikely to pay with our lives for our views or beliefs here in the West. We can swagger about and feel courageous, but we do not have any idea of true courage - donning a baseball cap in Iraq over your veil. That is courage.

Sounds like the NOW nags could take a lesson from these women on the true meaning of feminism.

Wow, and I thought I took sports seriously.

I'd have to pass on the bus, ask an Israeli, they really aren't a good idea. It won't be long before they get hit with a roadside bomb if the terrorists take what they've learned in Israel and combine that with their Iraq tactics.

Their bravery is inspiring and what our country is all about, regardless of party. Freedom.
