Hoist the Black Flag, Tuesday at 4 ET

And repeated later. Not really sure how all that works yet.

All on Rightalk.

First guests: Supercolumnist and superblogger Michelle Malkin and James Taranto of the must-read Best of the Web Today on Wall Street Journal's Opinion Journal thingee.

They've both confirmed (Michelle said "We're on like Donkey Kong," which I hope to have the opportunity to use in a conversation some time) but, obviously, there's always the possibility of a last-minute cancellation.

If there are questions you'd like to see us ask them, feel free to suggest them in the comments. We're working on our own questions, of course, and we probably won't be able to get to more than one reader-suggested question (if that; we've only got them for 20-25 minutes each, and that's just not a lot of time at all), but if you've got a great one, we'll see if we can slip it in.

Ummm, personal favor? Don't suggest any untoward questions for Michelle. Shockingly enough, she reads this moronblog from time to time.

Yes yes, she's very hot, but there isn't a lot of political interest in that line of inquiry. Unless it's something about the Dour Feminist Left's insistence that women ought not be pretty or use lipstick, but we're probably going to ask her something about that anyhow. Time permitting. We have a lot to ask both of them, and we'll probably get to less than a quarter of the stuff we want to ask.

Oh, As To Calls: Someone asked if we'd be taking calls.

We plan on taking calls. For this first show, do call in, but I've got to tell you, it's a bit action-packed and we don't know if we'll get to take many, or any, calls at all.

My original conception was a one-guest show, taking about a half hour, with a half an hour for Karol and I to riff on the news and take calls. Whether we switch over to that format is anyone's guess; for the first show, we're loading it up with guests because, really, we haven't done this before, and frankly we can use the help of articulate and interesting guests just carrying us along.

Once we get the hang of this, we'll see if we're able to carry that last half-hour ourselves. With help from callers, of course.

Wow, nice job on the first guests. Couple of big name, there.

Posted by: brak on May 6, 2005 02:53 PM

Hoist the Black Flag!?! What kind of an Anarchist show are you running? Seems kind of....atypical of you. If people google for this sort of thing you'll end up with an interesting mix of conservative choral members and Anarcho-Punks who ended up there because they were looking to download bootleg Black Flag songs.

Posted by: vonKreedon on May 6, 2005 02:56 PM

I still think they should play some Rollins spoken word material, maybe thrwo is some Black flagg for theme music

Posted by: brak on May 6, 2005 02:57 PM

Yes, they were both extraodinarily nice to agree to do our first show, especially because we have yet to display any sort of confidence-building professionalism.

We're working on that, though.

Posted by: ace on May 6, 2005 02:57 PM

We can only pick music from a very crappy library of very cheap and bad music, so, no black flag, no Motorhead, no Sex Pistols, nothing that we'd really want.

Although Karol is trying to see if some of her boyfriend Peter's music would make for good intros and bumpers.

But, barring that, it's not going to be good music.

Also-- at least in teh beginnning, no damn sound effects. And I really wanted to use "Lightning bolt!" on occasion.

That's something else we're working on.

Posted by: ace on May 6, 2005 02:59 PM

Does she have a sister?

Posted by: rdbrewer on May 6, 2005 03:01 PM

Nice line-up for the first show. Will you be taking calls, or is this first show going to be strictly you and Karol talking to Michelle and James?

Posted by: utron on May 6, 2005 03:02 PM

Please ask Michelle to talk about the last D&D character she rolled up. Bet she was smokin' hot in that leather armor.

Posted by: The Dude on May 6, 2005 03:06 PM

Seriously, I think the most interesting thing to talk about with Malkin, especially coming from this site, would be the "South park conservative" bloc and the "big-tent" nature of the GOP and how she sees that coming from a more socially conservative aspect. Same thing with Taranto, though I'd also discuss his recent op-ed on the religious right. I thougt it was pretty good, would make for interesting discussion.

Posted by: brak on May 6, 2005 03:09 PM

That's what we've sort of agreed to talk about with both, at least for some of the time, although I did wonder if it was a good idea to hit the same topic with both guests.

Karol thinks it's fine, and so we'll ask both of them questions in that area.

Posted by: ace on May 6, 2005 03:14 PM

Ask them why American politics is a two party hatefest with no room for moderates, and how they've capitalized on this phenomenon to build their careers. Follow up question: How long do you think your career will last (to Malkin).

Posted by: on May 6, 2005 03:15 PM

I've got a question for you, anonymous troll:

How about you unzip my fly and fuckin' eat me?

Posted by: ace on May 6, 2005 03:18 PM

Brilliant insight, colon.

Posted by: someone on May 6, 2005 03:18 PM

So is the recent posting slowdown a sign you're hoarding material for your show?

Posted by: someone on May 6, 2005 03:20 PM

America has plenty of moderates.
We call them 'Republicans' now.

Posted by: lauraw on May 6, 2005 03:20 PM

Ace, now you are stealing your questions from Pat O'Brien.

Posted by: Dman on May 6, 2005 03:25 PM

I would ask both of them whether the tension between the so-called 'south park' republicans and the social conservative republicans will hurt the GOP in the 2006 elections.

Also, I know she's big on immigration, but how can the GOP tackle the illegal immigration issue without alienating hispanic voters?

Posted by: Slublog on May 6, 2005 03:25 PM

And how much of this "tension" is made up b/c we're bored of beating the pants off the libs?

Posted by: fat kid on May 6, 2005 03:27 PM

Another good question would be "when was the last time a liberal (howard dean, john kerry, biden, et al) came up with an actual plan of their own, you know, that didn't consist of "well that's a bad idea and I'll tell you why"".

Posted by: fat kid on May 6, 2005 03:29 PM

I'm honestly afraid that the social conservatives, a notoriously twitchy and oversensitive group of voters led by the increasingly hysterical James Dobson, will jump ship because they don't like the "direction" the party is headed.

The religious conservatives are guilty of pretty consistently making the threat to stay home on election day if they don't get their way. I happen to be a religious conservative who is bugged by my fellow conservatives sometimes.

Posted by: Slublog on May 6, 2005 03:33 PM

I love how these gutless wonders feel free to come in and drop their little literary turds without identifying themselves. What's worse, they seem to think that repeating the same tired old tropes they gleaned from the forums on Kos or DU will somehow make them look smart. You wanna impress me, pal? Try thinking for yourself instead of letting other people do it for you.

Or you can simply obey Ace's command and drop'n'gobble. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Posted by: Monty on May 6, 2005 03:34 PM

I'm not suggesting Malkin is such a voter, BTW...she's levelheaded.

Posted by: Slublog on May 6, 2005 03:35 PM

If I recall, Malkin has had a pissing match with the WSJ in the past. Will you bring that up or is it too early in the life of the show to start something between the guests.

Posted by: Dman on May 6, 2005 03:35 PM

I like Slublog's question, so I'll second that.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on May 6, 2005 03:36 PM

Not for this show, obviously, but I think you should interview Jay Cost.

Posted by: someone on May 6, 2005 03:38 PM

PO'B: "I want you to suck my c*ck"

Rosie the Retard: "DELICIOUS!!!"

ahhh, the blessed "mosderate"---one who doesn't have enough spine to ever decide ANYTHING. Yes, teh "moderates" are the passive-agressive, indecisive, manmby-pamby strength of the nation.

fuck off, colon.

And ace, Malking AND Taranto?

Wow.

Very compact shit, brother.

DON'T SAY UM or UH!!!

Posted by: hobgoblin on May 6, 2005 03:44 PM

Hey, you went with the right name!!

I knew you would.

Posted by: TallDave on May 6, 2005 03:56 PM

I have high hopes for your show. It'll be great.

Do us all a favor, though, and don't underestimate what your audience want. It seems that was what caused Bill and Jeff's show to become what it.. became. I'm all for humor, especially if its funny, but I know I'm not going to tune into a show whose whole premise is to try to make you laugh. Let's hear some interesting and insightful comments on politics today. You know, like your blog. With audio.

Posted by: alan on May 6, 2005 04:02 PM

? for Michelle:

What is with all the hotness? Seriously. Leave some for the other women.

Posted by: TallDave on May 6, 2005 04:06 PM

Another potential question: what does she think the republicans should do on the issue of voter fraud? It's a growing problem, and one that doesn't seem to get much attention from people in either party. Why are repubs scared to do anything about it?

Posted by: Slublog on May 6, 2005 04:10 PM

OK more seriously, you might ask how she as an Asian-American feels about college-entrance affirmative action standards that are designed specifically to discriminate against Asian minorities.

Also, you might ask her if she feels betrayed by John Lott, as a lot of people on the Right do.

Posted by: TallDave on May 6, 2005 04:14 PM

I'm glad to see my vote for Hoist the Black Flag counted for something.

Posted by: tinkerbelle on May 6, 2005 04:14 PM

Yeah, don't become like us, Ace. Just be you.

If I had it to do over again with Malkin, I asj her more about, say, immigration, and less about what her favorite snacking chips are, and if she's a fan of such early Jason Bateman vehicles like "It's Your Move."

Learn from my failure.

Posted by: Jeff G on May 6, 2005 04:18 PM

Again, good name. In retrospect the obvious choice, so much so that I have to wonder whether the naming dilemma was a publicity stunt.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, although I usually expect publicity stunts to include wild accusations, public nudity, maiming, or obscene phone messages. So do better next time.

Ask Taranto about the WSJ's open-border policy and their attacks on immigration-opponents as nativists (specifically Jason Riley on their board.) I'm a big fan of the WSJ crew but I'm just baffled that they're not more serious about the security risks posed by an undefended border.

Posted by: See-Dubya on May 6, 2005 04:48 PM

Questions for MM

1. Is she anti immigrant or just anti illegal immigrant?

2. What can the GOP do to reassure the Hispanic community that we are pro-immigrant but yet still take proactive steps to secure our boarders?

3. When she blogs in pajamas, are the pajamas silk, (please describe in detail)?

Posted by: Master of None on May 6, 2005 05:27 PM

N Korea is heading for a nuclear weapons test.

For you, Taranto, and Malkin....what then, after a N Korean nuke goes off?

1. Do we encourage Japan & S Korea to go nuclear, and for Japan to militarize as a counterweight to N Korea & China's growing military?

2. Do we do a blockade, and demand China join in it....or else??

Since N Korea has always been China's pawn, do we tell the ChiComs that they must join the blockade or it will NOT be business as usual?

3. If we just let N Korea procede, what about Iran? Will a double extra-hard with hand-wringing diplomatic deploration suffice with Iran when they get their nukes?

4. Will S Korea be happy with their appeasement if it means a nuke power to their North, a remilitarized Japan, and a US disgusted with S Korea's anti-American policies pulling troops and letting the S Koreans fend for themselves?

Posted by: Cedarford on May 6, 2005 05:57 PM

CF's questions are all good and timely.

(...shit.)

#5, for Malkin: Have you ever actually watched It Hits the Fan? If so, how could you possibly have missed the message? If not, why not? Don't you think a columnist should try to understand a show before attacking it?

#6, for Taranto: Given that your "[Blank] imitates South Park" series in BotWT indicates a ready familiarity with and approval of the show, do you agree or disagree with Malkin's point in this column, specifically with regard to episode 502?

Posted by: Megan on May 6, 2005 07:05 PM

Great guest line up, especially for a first show. Hell, you have a chance to do better than O'reily did last night with Malkin on the whole social con topic. And Tatanto, lofty air you're breathin', Ace. Good luck!

Posted by: Dan on May 6, 2005 07:11 PM

I don't care what the hell else you do, Ace, but you need to make it fucking clear that NO ONE fucks with South Park. NO ONE.

"Token, how many times do we have to go through this? You're black. You can play bass."

"Don't ever leave me Jesus, I couldn't stand to see You go
My heart would simply snap, my Lord,
If You walked on out that door
I promise I'll be good to You, and keep You warm at night
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, why don't we just
Shut off the light"

"I wasn't saying anything about their culture! I was just saying their city smells like ass."

"Hey! Why don't you people quit slacking off and get a job?! What's wrong with you? Go to college!"

"There's a place called the rainforest that truly sucks ass -
Let's knock it all down and get rid of it fast!"

Eric Cartman is the fucking Messiah. Do not. EVER. Fuck with South Park again, Michelle.

Posted by: Megan on May 6, 2005 07:27 PM

Would you please harass Taranto about his last name? Always bugged me how similar it is to Toronto. Feel I have to slow down and take my time when I come to read his name to make sure it's still not Toronto (and the thought of saying it aloud fills me with unreasonable apprehension.) God it bugs me.

Now, I realize this will neither be funny nor can it possibly go anywhere, but your radio show is going to be, above all, most concerned with pleasing me, isn't it? My most idiosyncratic whims? I would hate to have the letter writing campaign to your advertisers after just one show. Thank you for your attention.

Posted by: Ray Midge on May 6, 2005 08:01 PM

And if you are feeling frisky, ask him what's up with this "kerfuffle" crap.

Posted by: See-Dubya on May 6, 2005 09:25 PM

Ask Malkin if the stick up her ass is made of spruce or ash.

Posted by: Joe R. the Unabrewer on May 7, 2005 01:02 AM

Ask Joe R. the Unabrewer if that's Kevin Drum's dick up his ass.

Posted by: on May 7, 2005 11:57 AM

Malkin gets paid to write columns and she doesn't take donations at her blog. So, why does she feel the need to run a blog? How much time does she dedicate to blogging each day?

As a female conservative in the spotlight, does Malkin feel any responsibility as a representative for female conservatives in general? Does she believe her approach is different from others like Ann Coulter's or Laura Ingraham's?

Malkin's heritage has been attacked constantly by the more "tolerant" left. Does she think it's possible to challenge the public attacks successfully, or is it better to just ignore them?

Is Malking still happy with the Roomba she got for Christmas?

Ace, I don't know if asking journalists about specific world events really works (except for stories they've dedicated a lot of time to, like immigration in Malkin's case). They're reporters and Op-Ed types, so asking them about their craft seems more appropriate than asking them about North Korea or something. Just a thought.

Later,
bbeck

Glad to see you took my suggestion for a name. You'll never in a million zillion years guess where I got it from. Ready? Through guessing?

It was on a huge stack of black and gray t-shirts some guys had thrown in a dumpster behind Bloomingdales. There must have been hundreds of them--some overblown promotion fizzled out, most likely. Kind of sad, really, but you take inspiration where you find it, right?
