Old But Good: Backward-Masking "Satanic Messages" on Rock Records

Seriously, Stairway to Heaven really is pretty creepy backwards. I remember listening to it backwards in high school, and thinking, "Okay, I guess the people making a big issue about this do sort of have some reason to be suspicious." I mean, it's garbled and really he's not saying anything backwards at all, but if you're willing to believe, you can catch something that sounds like "One little child for Satan" and "He gives us six-six-six."

But of course it has to be accidental. The lyric -- heard in normal forward mode -- is just too good. It's just not possible that someone could intentionally write a great lyric that plays a "Satanic message" when heard backwards. No one's that talented. Not even Jimmy Page.

Unless... he really did forge a pact with the Fallen One.

No idea what the hell I'm supposed to be hearing on the other tracks. Another One Bites the Dust sounds just like you'd expect it to sound backwards-- just a bunch of backwards gibberish, for example.

Thanks to The Fat Kid.

Ultimate Score Update: Okay... Hit Me Baby One More Time is a must listen.

No getting around it... it sure does sound like she's saying "Sleep with me, I'm not too young."

Not sure why she needed to make that a subliminal message... the song and the video conveyed that message quite, errr, liminally. Sort of like including a backwards-masked subliminal message like "Air is something you should probably breathe, and try to eat some food and drink some water, or else you could die or something." What's the point?

Well, FWIW you can click one of the buttons to show the "reverse lyrics". Kinda interseting. I'm diggin the Brittney one - heh

Heh - now remember some 45 year old fat man writes brit's songs for her...

Ew

"No one's that talented. Not even Jimmy Page."

But maybe Robert Plant is... ;-)

Posted by: Tom on May 6, 2005 01:41 PM

FK, that's a real bad image there...

Posted by: Tom on May 6, 2005 01:41 PM

Well. . . it *is* fun to smoke marijuana.

Or so I've been told.

And really, if there's anything in life we can agree on, it's that Yoko really did kill John Lennon.

Metaphorically, of course.

Cheers,

Dude - that Stairway to Heaven thing is like 3 YEARS OLD!

I linked it from my old blog in 2002.

Posted by: Bill from INDC on May 6, 2005 01:47 PM

I mean, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Posted by: Bill from INDC on May 6, 2005 01:49 PM

Hence the "Old But Good" right there in the headline.

Posted by: ace on May 6, 2005 01:51 PM

THat's it, I'm de-linking Bill...

Heheh

Posted by: fat kid on May 6, 2005 01:59 PM

(Saw that, just harrassing you)

But be honest, you're just going to put that "Old But Good" in every headline now, you know, just in case.

that lunatic SonofNixon linked that site just a few months ago. And he doesn't even blog anymore.

LT Smash (navy recruiter): "We've got a 3-part campaign, subliminal, liminal, and superliminal."

Lisa: "Superliminal??"

LT Smash: "Yes." (leans out window) "YOU TWO THERE!! JOIN THE NAVY!!"

Lenny and Carl: "OK. Sure, I'm in."

Backmasked messages aren't planned consciously and they aren't technically subliminal messages either. Rather, they are considered by believers in reverse speech to be the subconcious communicating simultaneously with the conscious.

You can hear some famous speeches "reversed" here:
http://www.reversespeech.com/Simple_Examples.htm

There is also a much better explanation of Reverse speech on the site.

Supertramp, forget the song, included "the music is reversable, but time is not, turn back, turn back" in the intro to a song.

Posted by: andy on May 6, 2005 06:25 PM

The "Pokemon" craze sure makes a lot more sense now...

here is another one:

Not as good, but worth a listen

Posted by: WesB on May 6, 2005 09:49 PM

Andy -- It was ELO, not Supertramp... I think the track was "Fire on High", which CBS Sports Spectacular (with Pat O'B?) used as a theme.

Page bought (and lived in! -- maybe still does, I don't know) Alistair Crowley's mansion. Crowley declared himself Mr. Satan himself, so...dunno, you know, known by your associates and all that.

Posted by: -S- on May 7, 2005 05:06 AM

Aleister Crowley, rather.

Seems to be a common perception that Jimmy Page was influenced by the guy and the, um, projects involved.

It's tough to be disillusioned (a while ago, not today) about music I used to really like. Was a huge disappointment to find the influences involved in Led Zeppelin, just very disillusioning.

I did a Google search for the terms and found thousands of websites, no less.

Posted by: -S- on May 7, 2005 05:11 AM

Don't forget ELO's "Fire on High" whoch intones, when reversed, that "The Music is reverseable"

Posted by: Biithead on May 7, 2005 03:55 PM

I love "Fire On High". Brilliant track.

Who the fuck WOULDN'T have tagged Britney, even before she was legal?

And third, I had a band director in high school who swore that if you listened closely to "Stairway" you could hear the theme from "The Muppet Show". She never specified how fucking baked you had to be to have this WORK.

Posted by: SGT Dan on May 8, 2005 12:17 AM

It's a pretty simple scam - the people who get all axle-wrapped about this kind of thing tell you what you're supposed to hear, then they play it and SURPRISE! you hear it.

This was real big for about a month when I was in college...

... in 1982.

Had Algore even invented INTERNET by then?

Posted by: Chris of Dangerous Logic on May 9, 2005 10:57 AM

There's an obvious difference between the ones that were planted and the ones that kinda, sorta sound like it.

The ones in I'm So Tired, Hit Me Baby, Wierd Al's tune, Eminem's tune and Pink Floyd's tune were done on purpose.

You can tell by listening to the forward version and listening for something that sounds indistinguishable or backwards, like backing vocals or weird sound effects dubbed in with the regular vocals.

The others, except Stairway, were just guesses or co-incidence.

Stairway is the really weird one. The backwards stuff sounds so real, but there's no evidence of overdubs on the frontwards track.
