Nerd Nation: Hitchhiker's Guide #1 at Box

Over $20 million. Not bad for a spring release featuring a bunch of (talented) no-names.

I saw the film yesterday. I'm still writing my review, but I'd say it's a three star movie (that's slightly charitable; maybe two and three-quarters stars is more accurate). It departs from the book in frustratingly unnecessary ways, but most of it is good, and it's consistently amusing.

Like Sully today I am chagrined that this Geek-a-thon is No. 1. Just goes to show that the ACE is in the right place at the right time: there really are millions upon millions sci-fi geekie dorks out there trying to be cool. No, you're not going to be able to get a woman to pay any attention to you because you like sci-fi. Just ask the ACE. Get a life geeks!

I was intending to see this flick on Friday, but there was a conflict of interest. Specifically, my waiter decided that he had better things to do than get my food to me hot, or timely. Having eaten a cold Chile Relleno and realizing that even with 20 min. of ads, I still would have missed most of the movie, I returned home by way of Blockbuster. I rented Shaun of the Dead. My girlfriend rented Elektra. After watching Elektra (girlfriend fell asleep about five minutes in that particular hell) I decided that I would much rather search through my old videos to find the BBC version of HHTG than ever go through that again. Ever.

Saw it. Nothing to write home about. Somewhat amusing, but nowhere near as funny as the books. About as expected.

The funniest part in the entire movie was the scene on Vogsphere where they keep getting hit in the face. That scene should have been extended for about 10 more minutes. I would have wet myself laughing.

I was surprised at some of the stuff that was completely left out. Certain scenes that would have made the overall movie much funnier. The scene with the Vogon that drags Ford and Arthur around the ship, for instance. Or the bit with the Nutrimatic.

And was that Marvin (from the BBC version) that I saw in the line on Vogsphere? They showed him almost full camera about twice. I know I've seen that robot before.

Mob:

Yep, that was the BBC Marvin. Plus, it was nice to see the BBC Arthur Dent show up (as the Magrathean 'We're Closed for Business, Go Away' messenger).

Well, Alan Rickman is in it, and I've recently taken a deep and personal dislike to his Rachel-Corrie-pimpin' ass. When you add in that I've read the book about a dozen times and that the movie's got poor reviews, I'm happy to give the movie a miss and Rickman the finger.

I've read all the books a bunch of times too, and overall I liked the movie. Yeah, they made some significant changes to the story line and some of the characters, but I thought it captured the tone of the books rather well. Also, I noticed that Douglas Adams had the screenplay credit, so I'm guessing the changes were okay with him. At least before died - who knows what they did after he was gone. Anyway, I hope it does well enough that they'll do the sequel.
